1 TOWN OF SPRINGDALE NOVEMBER 2018 From Mayor Smith ESTD 1862 A Special and Meaningful Commemoration SONGS OF LIFE I continue to believe it is the people that make a community. The action of each individual adds to, or takes away from, the spirit of our town. Many people have chosen to settle here and their contributions have helped shape Springdale into a special place to live. Unfortunately, we lost one of those people recently. JR Madsen moved to Springdale with his parents in He married his wife Mavis and raised nine children in this canyon. He was a very talented person and served on a number of civic and community organizations. The Springdale Historic Preservation Commission has presented the town with a monument to commemorate the stone ditch-works that lined the streets of Springdale until recently removed to accommodate improvements to Zion Park Boulevard (SR-9). UDOT contracted to build the stone monument and it stands near the only remaining section of the original ditches. The plaque outlines a short history of the ditch and explains that together, pioneers and laborers of the Civilian Conservation Corps (W.P.A.) constructed the ditches throughout town. The stones came from a quarry that is a mere quarter of a mile from town center, beyond the Jolley-Gifford cemetery. Quarrymen shinnied up the sandstone cliffs on cold winter days and drilled holes in the rocks, filled the holes with water, then sealed the hole with a wooden peg. During the night, the water froze and the expansion of ice served to crack the stone. The following day, quarrymen chiseled the split rock into appropriate shapes for the construction of the ditches. The stones were then carried down the mountainside and delivered to the worksite on wagons pulled by horses and oxen. One thing I will miss most is JR s incredible musical ability. I loved to listen as he played the piano; it seemed he could play anything by ear. His beautiful voice serenaded many occasions and it was a pleasure to sit next to him in choir. The songs of the birds in the canyon are certainly beautiful but their music won t be nearly as sweet with JR gone. STAN springdaletown.com 118 Lion Boulevard Springdale, UT The work was difficult and unforgiving. One day, to the annoyance of the experienced masons, a youthful worker became frustrated and threw all the tools off the side of the cliff in a fit of temper. (continued on page 2) 1
2 TOWN OF SPRINGDALE A Special Commemoration continued from page 1 Several of the CCC men married local women and raised families in Springdale and many became master masons. Among them were Dewey Excell, John Winder, Lyle Winder, Howard Ruesch, Sheldon Olsen, Clin Twitchell and Leonard Wilcox. They designed and chiseled rock for not only the ditches, but also the stones that line roadways through town and through the park, as well as the beautiful arched Rainbow Bridge that spans Pine Creek, at the first switchback (SR-9 to the Zion-Mt. Carmel Tunnel). UDOT co-operated with Springdale to salvage many stones during the ditch removal and those stones are being stored for future historic projects. Everyone is invited to view the new monument, located on the grass in front of MeMe s Café on Juniper Lane. AFTER HOURS WATER, SEWER, IRRIGATION OR STREET ISSUES? DIAL THE SPRINGDALE ON-CALL NUMBER AT: LAST DUMPSTERS OF THE YEAR NOVEMBER 9-11 The Annual Christmas Bird Count Zion National Park's annual Christmas Bird Count is scheduled for Saturday, December 15, 2018 and all are invited to participate! The Christmas Bird Count (CBC), sponsored by the National Audubon Society, is the longest-running citizen science survey in the world. The data collected during CBCs provides critical data on bird population trends. This year marks the 119th year of Christmas Bird Counts, and the 57th year of the Zion CBC! Volunteers of all skill levels are welcome to participate, though a basic level of familiarity with Southern Utah's wintering birds is helpful. Each participant should bring their own pair of binoculars or a spotting scope and food, water, and clothing for a winter day outdoors. The count will go roughly from sunrise to sunset, 8am - 5pm, followed by a potluck where we can go over the day's birds. If you are interested in participating or have any questions, please contact Jason Pietrzak (Zion Wildlife) by Monday, December 3rd, jason_pietrzak@nps.gov or call ZION JOY TO THE WORLD UPCOMING EVENTS NOV 23 24: Z-ARTS ARTS & CRAFTS FAIR, 10AM 5PM, AT THE CCC DEC 8: LIGHT PARADE & SWEETS SOCIAL, 7PM, DOWNTOWN TO THE CCC DEC 31: NYE COMMUNITY SOCIAL & FIREWORKS, 6PM, AT THE CCC See flyer for a complete listing of events. 2
3 Planning for a Healthy Virgin River The Virgin River is the literal and figurative core of Zion Canyon. Over millions of years the river carved the sandstone walls and cliff faces that comprise Zion s dramatic scenery. The river provides water that sustains plant, animal, and human life in the canyon. The river and riparian areas associated with the river provide habitat for a diverse array of wildlife. The river corridor provides recreation opportunities for residents and visitors. The Chief s Message Springdale Police Department The Springdale Police Department teamed up with several sponsors and purchased elementary school shirts for students to wear on Fridays and special events. On October 23 rd we held our annual Safety Fair at the Springdale Elementary School. A pizza lunch was served to the kids by Officer Hansen, Officer Bulkley, PEO Holli George, and Jen Thompson. After lunch, the children rotated to different safety stations and learned safety tips. Hurricane Valley Fire sent a Fire Safety Trailer equipped to teach children fire safety. Zion National Park Search and Rescue taught hiking safety and rescue. Because the Virgin River is such an integral and essential element of what makes Zion Canyon unique it is important to protect and promote a healthy Virgin River corridor. Doing so will ensure current and future generations of residents and visitors will continue to enjoy the benefits of a well-functioning river. The Town is in the process of a planning effort that will help ensure a healthy Virgin River for years to come. The Virgin River Management Plan (VRMP) will put forward action steps for the Town, residents, business owners, and visitors to take to help protect and promote the health of the Virgin River corridor. The VRMP will have three main focus areas: 1) strategies regulating land use and development near the river, 2) action steps to protect and enhance the environmental quality of the river and riparian areas near the river, and 3) standards to encourage appropriate recreational use of the river. If you have questions about the VRMP process or would like to contribute insight or comments about the project, please contact Associate Planner Sophie Frankenberg in the Town Office ( ). The Southwest Utah Public Health Dept. provided a bicycle course and the Police Dept. helped kids navigate through the cones. The St. George Bicycle Collective lent bikes for kids to use. Thank you, Jen Thompson, for putting this fun-filled event together. Check out more photos of this event on our Facebook page: Thanks for your continued support. CHIEF BRECKE As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them. ~John F. Kennedy Wishing all residents and visitors to the Town of Springdale a very Happy Thanksgiving. 3
