1 THE PARISH VOICE Finley Lutheran Parish March 2017 Farewell to the Fine Folks of the Finley Parish Thanks for the opportunity to serve with you these past six months. My contract with you will not be extended due to parish financial shortfall. Know that the Call Committee and the Joint Council are actively working with the synod office to discern what is next for your pastoral leadership. Blessings to you all as your continue to discern what will be next for your Pastoral leadership. SNOWBIRDS: I will not have an opportunity to say good bye to you personally but want you to know I was grateful to meet you and pray for your safety as you journey back to Finley. God Bless you all. In the standard interim contract there is a built in transition time for the interim in which compensation is continued. The reason I mention this is that I will continue to reside in the parsonage for that time since housing is a part of compensation. I am actively seeking another ministry opportunity. So if you still see me around please say hello! And as I bring closure to my time here with you, I will carry with me memories of you and the ministry we were able to do together in Jesus name during this interim time. Thank you. Ash Wednesday, March 1: 5:30 - pancake and sausage supper 7:00 - Worship Cookies or bars, coffee and lemonade will be served after all other Wednesday services. Finley will provide the coffee and lemonade after each service. Cookies and bars will be provided according to the following schedule: March 8 - Ostervold March 15 - Sheyenne Valley March 22 - Finley March 29 - Ostervold April 5 - Sheyenne Valley Holy Week: April 13 - Maundy Thursday - 7:00pm at Ostervold (No first communion this year) April 14 - Good Friday Service - 7:00pm at Sheyenne Valley. April 16 - Easter Sunday Services Sheyenne Valley - 8:00am Ostervold - 9:30am Finley - 11:00am.

3 March 19th we will be having two movies for the community starting at 3pm. Miracle on Ice will be showing upstairs and downstairs we will have Pete s Dragon. So take your pick of two great movies and bring a friend. Everyone is welcome. We will have drinks and popcorn during the movies. Community Movie Pete s Dragon Showing Downstairs Sunday March 19th at 3:00 PM Community Movie Miracle Showing Upstairs Sunday March 19th at 3:00 PM Filled with exhilarating nonstop hockey action and heart-racing suspense, it's the inspiring true story behind one of the greatest moments in sports history - the 1980 United States ice hockey team's triumphant Olympic victory against the Soviet Union. Determined coach Herb Brooks, who had an impossible dream -- beat the seemingly unbeatable Soviets at their own game. Starting with a handpicked group of twenty-six undisciplined kids, Brooks coached them to play like they never played before, and turned twenty of them into a team that believed they could achieve the unachievable -- and in the process, united a nation with a new feeling of hope. Pete s Dragon is a delightful remake of Disney s 1977 classic. It s wholesome, sweet, fun and exciting. Pete is 5 when he's in a terrible car accident that leaves him orphaned and abandoned in the woods. But sweet, furry dragon Elliot takes care of Pete for several years. This is a sweet film about love, friendship, finding family in unexpected places, appreciating nature, and opening yourself up to believing in magic. Baptism Corban Paul Hegvick, son of Suzanne & Bradley Hegvick, born September 30th, 2016 was baptized at Finley Lutheran Church, Sunday, February 5th, 2017 by Pastor Cheryl Berg. Sponsors were Miranda Slominski and Kameron Slominski. Confirmation Alexis Lyn Geier, daughter of Brad & Stacee Lundstrom & Beth Sharon Mehus, daughter of Lori Mehus & the late Robert Mehus Lexi & Beth were confirmed at Finley Lutheran Church, Sunday, February 19th, 2017 by Pastor Cheryl Berg

4 Theological Education for Emerging Ministries Theological Education for Emerging Ministries (TEEM) is a leadership formation process in the ELCA designed for those who meet established criteria. Consideration for admittance into the TEEM process begins with the granting of entrance by the Synod Candidacy Committee followed by a recommendation from a synod bishop. Every candidate participating in the TEEM process must be serving in an emerging ministry site identified by a synod bishop. Emerging ministries can be small membership rural congregations where a synod has had difficulty identifying and placing a pastor to serve. TEEM candidates complete all the steps in the candidacy process. After a TEEM candidate complete the academic and practical ministry requirements and are granted approval by a Candidacy Committee, they normally serve their first call in the ministry site identified by a synod bishop. Following first call, the opportunities are the same as for all ELCA rostered ministers. After a second meeting with John Miller the Call Committee recommended to the Joint Council that we hire John Miller as a TEEM Minister. Compensation would be according to the outline presented by the Synod. It was decided to offer a call for TEEM Ministry to John Miller. The start date will be negotiated. The three congregations now must meet and approve this call. The Joint Council thought that it was necessary for Bishop Brant to meet with parish members to explain TEEM ministries before voting. There will be a Joint service Sunday, March 26 th at 10am in Finley with Bishop Terry Brandt. Bishop Brandt will explain the TEEM ministry to us and then each church will do a separate paper ballet. Each of the three churches will need to have a 2/3 yes vote approval for us to sponsor John Miller, in the TEEM Ministries program in Finley Lutheran Parish. There will be a potluck following church.

5 Special Meeting of the Finley Lutheran Parish Joint Council February 22, 2017 Abbreviated The meeting was called to order at 7:10pm by President Don Nygaard. Members present were Carol Anderson, Wayne Beckman, Harlan Brager, Art Krueger from Finley; Larry Carlson, Lynn Carlson from Sheyenne Valley; and Don Nygaard, Gina Jacobson, Kelly Jacobson, Marlys Jacobson, Bob Paulsen and Carolyn Paulsen from Ostervold. The special meeting was called to act on the Call Committee s recommendation to sponsor John Miller, in the TEEM Ministries program in Finley Lutheran Parish. Meeting opened with prayer by Carolyn Paulsen. The minutes for the three previous meetings (Jan. 25, 2017, Feb. 1, 2017 and Feb 15, 2017) were not read. Don N. turned the meeting over to Lynn C. on behalf of the Call Committee. After a second meeting with John Miller the Call Committee recommended to the Joint Council that we hire John Miller as a TEEM Minister. Compensation would be according to the outline presented by the Synod. Motion made by Art K. and seconded by Wayne B. to offer a call for TEEM Ministry to John Miller. Motion Carried unanimously. Lynn C. and Don N. will negotiate the start date. The three congregations now must meet and approve this call with a 2/3 yes vote of members present of each congregation. The Joint Council thought that it was necessary for Bishop Brant to meet with parish members to explain the TEEM ministries before voting. March 26 was selected as a joint service with all congregations with Bishop Brant. Don N. and Lynn C. will contact Bishop Brant and also see if John Miller could preach on March 5 as we still need pulpit supply on that date. It was the consensus of the Joint Council to leave the parsonage available for John Miller to use until he moves in fulltime. The Finley Lutheran Parish website contract will expire on March 21, Motion made by Jason R. and seconded by Lynn C. to renew the website contract for 3 years. Motion carried. Website address is: Pulpit supply: March 5 open (will ask John Miller) March 12, 19 covered March 26 will ask Bishop Brant, and have congregational meetings to approve call. April covered. Art K. is responsible for finding Pulpit Supply for May, so need to know start date of John Miller asap. Art K. will talk to Pastor Russ to do the Ash Wednesday service. If Pastor Russ is not available, Art will do it. Pam Montag is still looking for volunteers to cover the remaining Wednesday night Lenten Services. She has some already lined up. Appointing a support group from members of each congregation for John Miller was discussed. We will cover this at our congregation meetings on March 26. 6 Finley Lutheran Church Council Highlights February 15, 2017 Present: Harlan Brager, Jason Rayner, Art Krueger, Carol Anderson, and Pastor Cheryl Berg. Creta Moe and Shirley Alm helped the confirmation class tie a quilt for the needy. One deacon position is still open on the council. The furnace repairs are done. The Sunday school rooms have been cleaned of unwanted items. There will be a pancake supper for the parish on Ash Wednesday. The parish will do the Lenten Services. April Sundays are all covered for pulpit supply. Corbin Hegvick son of Brad & Susie Hegvick was baptized February 5 th. Confirmation will be February 19 th for Beth Mehus and Lexie Geier. Homebound visitation was discussed. The community movie is March 19 th with Pete s Dragon and Miracle on Ice. The Finley Quilters put this quilt together and the confirmation class tied it with Creta Moe, Shirley Alm, and Pastor Cheryl Berg. It was on display in the front entry of the Finley Lutheran Church.
