2 Have You Memorized His Word Lately? Have you ever memorized the lyrics to your favorite song? Have you ever memorized the lyrics to five of your favorite songs? Have you ever memorized your favorite Bible verse? Have you ever memorized five of your favorite Bible verses? I recently heard a story about a retired missionary, who memorized the entire New Testament. In his later years, he spent his days in downtown Chicago, going from office building to office building. He would ask the secretary if he could have five minutes with the boss to discuss a personal matter. Frequently he would be ushered into executive s office, where he would say, I only have five minutes, but I would like to ask you did you read your Bible before you came to work this morning? The boss would usually look at him as if he were crazy and say, No. The missionary would smile and answer, Sir, you sure missed a blessing, didn t you? I d like to share with you what God spoke about to me this morning. The missionary would open a New Testament, hand it to the boss and say, Let s start right here. Then the missionary would sit back and start quoting the scripture word for word. Most people listened in amazement. After five minutes, the missionary would say, My time s up and I ve got to go. Wasn t that a blessing? On many occasions the businessman would ask him to stay longer, and they would talk. This missionary led many to make a profession of faith in Jesus Christ all over Chicago because God s word dwelled in his heart. In Psalm 119:11, the psalmist writes, I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you. Brothers and sisters in Christ, God has created us with an amazing ability to remember. We have the ability. We just need the desire to read and memorize His word. I would like for each of us to pray that the Holy Spirt will drive a passion for His word deep into our hearts. Also, I would like each of us to commit to learning five verses in the month of August, maybe even more. Through God s grace I am convinced that we can achieve this goal and more. Grace and peace, Jason Attention Parents of Pre-Schoolers Our Little School is taking early registrations for the 2018/2019 school term. 5 DCC LIBRARY NEWS The Diamondhead Community Church Library maintains a collection of media for all ages that provides the opportunity for studying, learning and teaching. It is a resource that supports personal and congregational growth in our Christian faith and living so the members and friends of Diamondhead Community Church continue to foster an environment that seeks to meet the needs of each other. Frederick Buechner TELLING SECRETS a book review by Carol Benzing. Buechner, now over 90 years old is an ordained Presbyterian minister, novelist, and poet with more than 30 fiction and non-fiction books to his credit. A finalist for the Pulitzer, Buechner received the O. Henry Award, the Rosenthal Award, and the Christianity and Literature Belles Lettres Prize and many more. TELLING SECRETS is Buechner s third of five autobiographical memoirs. In this book he opens his personal window for all to see in, even himself. He shares how he coped with family secrets including his father s suicide, his mother s particularities, his brother s behaviors and his daughter s struggle with anorexia. Buechner does not refer to his family s experiences as stories, because he admits he does not really know their stories. He can only relate what part he played in their secrets and how peace eluded him. Shelved in the Section: Biography, TELLING SECRETS gives permission to examine and probe our own family secrets, but admonishes us to listen to God s commission to save ourselves and use our experiences to enrich others. The Library Book Cart stationed at the main entrance offers a variety of books available for Speedy Checkout. COMING in OCTOBER a Fall Book Event. Before and after each church service books for every member of the family will be available for a donation. Proceeds are designated for purchasing bookshelves for your Library. New on the shelves: Elijah and Jonah Lindsey have donated CARS, TRUCKS, PLANES, AND TRAINS, PAWsome SONGS, LITTLE PINK PUP, CARS IN COLOR, A DAY ON THE FARM and GOOD NIGHT, GORILLA to the WEE Library. Christian Benzing presented the Children s Library with the following books: SHADOW, WILD LIFE, HERO, WOODS RUNNER, HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER S STONE AND MAGIC TREE HOUSE #31 SUMMER OF THE SEA SERPENT. Please consider donating new or gently read books to your DCC Library or for the Fall Book Event. So your gift can be acknowledged, attach a note with your name to the media.
