1 SUNDAY, JUNE 12, 2011 COME HEAR THE MUSIC OF THE PSALMS Composers throughout history have been inspired by the book of Psalms, which contains some of the best lyrics for writing music. They are dramatic, prayerful, rhythmic, soothing and most important - familiar! This Friday s concert is an opportunity to experience both dynamic and soothing Psalms set in different musical styles. Listen for the familiar and rejoice in the new as Music at Westwood presents A Festival of Psalms, the final concert of the season. The Chancel Choir and members of the Westwood Chamber Orchestra will perform the very dramatic and visually stimulating Chichester Psalms by Leonard Bernstein. You will hear the dance rhythms of Westside Story and the melodies from Candide as they breathe life into a new lyric, Psalm 100. Rounding out the program will be classical compositions by Christopher Tye, J.S. Bach, Mozart, Brahms, Holst and Franck and works by WPC composers, Psalm 139 by bass soloist Paul Cummings and Make a Joyful Noise by music director John-Kevin Hilbert. Get your tickets today. The concert begins at 8:00 pm.
2 SHH! IT S A SURPRISE! By now she knows, but the real reason for our poetry reading today at 12:30 pm in Hoffman Hall is to honor Keven Bellows, who was the encouraging force behind Poetry & Spirit for the group s first eight years. We will read some of our poetry, but the highlight will be Keven herself reading selections from a powerful love story: The Blue Darter her insightful, moving tribute to her late husband Jim Bellows. Keven will also be sharing new poems. Poetry can be fun, healing, inspiring, transformative. Keven stepped away from Poetry & Spirit last year, but we ve continued to feel her cheering us on, teaching us, encouraging us to keep writing. It s good for the soul. We hope you will join us in celebrating Keven. Refreshments will be served. Please come. PRESBYTERY TO HOLD TOWN MEETINGS The Presbytery of the Pacific is holding town meetings throughout June to discuss pending changes to the Book of Order, including the new standard for ordination and a new form of government. The next meetings are Saturday, June 25, at 9:00 am at Wilshire Presbyterian in Los Angeles and Sunday, June 26, at 2:30 pm at the First Presbyterian Church in Inglewood. For more information Clerk of the Session, Martha Kadue at m.kadue@gmail.com. WPC WANTS YOU I want to hear others perspectives, Scott Hartle told his wife, Deb, and so he signed them up for one of the Vision & Planning sharing sessions that begin today. Scott & Deb had a preview of the sessions at the May gathering of The Bridge, the young adults group at WPC. It was super interesting, Deb said. We got to hear the thoughts of people who d been at WPC a long time and from those who d come from other churches. We looked at what we loved, what we d change and how we d do it. The idea to test the waters at The Bridge came from Vision & Planning member Freeman Hall. It seemed like a great opportunity, said student ministries director Travis Overbeck. The process allowed participants to be anonymous. Everyone answered questions on sticky notes, and those were posted on a board. Then the fun began. Don t miss your chance to participate. Sign up today on the side porch.
3 GROWN-UPS HAVE FUN, TOO, AT VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL The volunteers have as much fun as the kids, says Miguel Vargas, who admits to dragging his feet when it comes to volunteering, It is a great way to meet people. Last year, Miguel says, though he had seen them at church, I didn t know the names of about two-thirds of the volunteers. After working together, I made a lot of new WPC friends. No teaching experience is necessary, and two or three volunteers work together on every activity, under Greg s direction. Volunteers are needed for both VBS sessions: Shake It Up Café, 9:00 am to noon, June 27 - July 1; Galactic Blast, 12:30 to 3:00 pm, July Register at You can also phone Greg at and he will register you on-line. WE WANT YOUR SNAPSHOTS Did you participate in something wonderful at WPC? Did you take pictures? Share the fun with the rest of us by sending us your photos. We won t use them all, so don t limit your contributions to prize-winning shots. What we want are photos that together give a feeling of the event. Questions? Call the church office. REMINDERS Join us on June 19th, as we honor and celebrate our amazing graduates during the 11:00 a.m. worship service. We are seeking members to serve on the Associate Pastor Nominating Committee. If you wish to nominate someone, please Jenny Farrell at WPCAPNC@westwoodpres.org. Purchase your tickets for the Grease Sing-A-Long at the Hollywood Bowl on the side porch! Questions: Kelly at sheridandallas77@aol.com.
4 With thanks to the WPC children, students, adult assistants and writer/producer/director John-Kevin Hilbert.
