3 From the Pastor s Computer: I recently share a video on Facebook by Pastor Nadia Bolz-Weber. Here is what she shared. I really believe that when someone else does us harm, we are connected to that mistreatment like a chain. Because forgiveness is nothing less than an act of fidelity to an evilcombating campaign. So it s not an act of niceness. It s not being a doormat. It really to me is more badass than that. Maybe retaliation, or holding on to anger, about the harm done to me doesn t actually combat evil. Maybe it feeds it. Because in the end, if we re not careful, we can actually absorb the worst of our enemy, and on some level, even start to become them. So what if forgiveness, rather than being like a pansy way of saying, it s OK, is actually a way of wielding bolt-cutters and snapping the chain that links us? Like it is saying, what you did was so not OK that I refuse to be connected to it anymore. Forgiveness is about being a freedom fighter, and free people are dangerous people. Free people aren t controlled by the past. Free people laugh more than others. Free people see beauty where others do not. Free people are not easily offended. Free people are unafraid to speak truth to stupid. Free people are not chained to resentments. That s worth fighting for. There really is a light that shines in the darkness, and that the darkness cannot, will not, shall not overcome it. Anyone interested in discussing this is welcome after Fellowship this Sunday. The next Fall FesTival Planning meeting is on sunday, august 26Th after church.

5 OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD AUGUST You might already have guessed what are the Shoebox items for August, school supplies!! There are so many neat items available now. The main items needed in each box are notebook paper, pencils, pencil sharpeners, erasers, pens, crayons, markers, mini-staplers, staples, ruler, glue stick, notepads, highlighters, school scissors, paper clips, and composition books. All children need these supplies. Some are able to go to school for the first time because these items were in their shoebox. We take crayons for granted, but in other countries, crayons are very expensive. Most families cannot afford to buy them, so please include a box in your shoebox. It is a lot of fun to go shopping for these items and know they are appreciated and needed. Plastic boxes to pack for Operation Christmas Child are being handed out after Sunday church services. Some will be left in the office for pick up. The boxes are free of charge. Please pick one up and fill it! De Colores! Fall Festival; September 30 th!

6 Salem Lutheran Church Council Meeting July 10, 2018 Minutes Council members in attendance: Pastor Dan, Mike Rothmann, Joel Anderson, Retha Hahn, Wanda Hahn and Cathy Hahn. Dotty Caldwell, Lindy Cain and Clarice Thiede were absent. Cathy Hahn shared a devotional Prayer Concerns-We shared prayer concerns for Sandra Ruddick, Rick Turpen has Hospice and is declining and the Garrett family. Approval of Agenda-Retha moved, Pastor seconded, motion carried. Approval of Minutes from previous meeting-lindy Cain added to absent list. Retha moved with correction, Pastor Dan seconded, motion carried. Treasurer-Income for June was up and expenses were down. We are now in the red by $7,101. Pastor-Survey information is being gathered and compiled for Synod. Proclaim-No report. Nurture-No report. Response-No report. Property-Retha reported on June 26 th meeting. It was an update for anyone interested on current projects and plans for properties. A project update will be included in the next Salem Star. Two new sub-teams will be started. One will be the Simple Maintenance Team (SMT) and the other will be in Information Technology (IT) team. Team descriptions and requests for participation will be presented to the congregation in the very near future. Electrical problems were identified as the cause for A/C units not working in the Sanctuary and Education Building last Sunday. Additional improvements will be made to all the A/C systems that should help them be more efficient. Work will begin the next few weeks to clean out rooms on the east/west hallway being used for storage in the Educational Bldg. Playground work is done!!

7 Old business-none New Business-New Keys being handed out. Thermostats need to be set below 80 after Sunday services. Calendar approved Closed with the Lord s Prayer. Respectfully submitted, Cathy Hahn, Acting Secretary TREASURER S REPORT July s offering totaled- $ 19, Lutheran Bible Camp in Puerto Rico donations totaled - $ 3, Simple Maintenance Team (SMT) We will be establishing a Simple Maintenance Team (SMT) consisting of at least three people. Minor tasks will be performed each month by one team member. If we have three members, then each person will perform the tasks once a quarter. The more people on the team, the fewer times each person will have to take a turn. The tasks will include but may not be limited to replacing burned out lights bulbs, doing minor plumbing repairs (flappers, etc.), changing batteries in smoke alarms and changing A/C filters. Once established, the SMT will be self-governing. They will set their own guidelines and schedule. They will determine how they will manage their supplies and tools. They will also decide when they need to meet or work as a team to complete tasks such as changing the light bulbs in the top of the sanctuary and narthex. Please contact Retha Hahn, , if you have questions or are interested in participating on this team. Three to six members would be wonderful, but there are no limitations to the numbers!
