1 First Church Of Winsted bellringer Come...be uplifted by the Spirit and strive to follow God s path for you! Word from the Pastor Greetings in the Name of Our Risen Lord! The first Easter Day was the defining moment for Christians. Jesus followers were surprised (to say the least) when they learned that Jesus had overcome death, the ultimate end of the line in their frame of reference. Out of that miracle, Christians became a people of hope. Ones who were willing to take risks because of their faith that God would enable them to do far more than they ever imagined. Because of Christ s victory over the grave, we look beyond the present challenges and trust that God will ultimately overcome all the forces of evil in the world. We are the Easter people. Centuries before that first Easter Day, the Israelites faced a difficult challenge. As recorded in the Old Testament book of Numbers (chapter 13), the people who were freed from slavery in Egypt were on their journey to find the Promised Land. As they approached Canaan, they sent a group of spies into the new region to scope out the land. The spies spent 40 days in the lush and bountiful land. And just as in everyday life, they found good and bad. The Promised Land had all they would need to live, but it also had obstacles and challenges. The spies gave conflicting reports to their leaders. Most said that they should not enter into the land because the people there were much bigger and stronger than they were. But one of the spies, Caleb, had a differing perspective. Instead of a threat, he saw opportunity. He believed that the Israelites had the resources to overcome the obstacles. We face the same challenges in life that the Israelites faced when they arrived to Canaan. There will always be risks in our world and in our lives. Risks of failure. The challenge of finding enough resources and time to get the job done. The prospect of disagreement with others. The fear of hurt and humiliation. But as the Easter People, we are called to be like Caleb. To see hope when others see a dead end. To be willing to do what logic says we can t do. To have faith and confidence in God s mercy and power. To move forward when others hesitate or pull back. May the hope, joy and wonder of the Easter Day events enable us to continue to find new ways to share God s love with those in our Church family, in our community, and throughout the world. 4 Just for Fun... A Mother s Love Determines How Author Unknown A mother's love determines how We love ourselves and others. There is no sky we'll ever see Not lit by that first love. Stripped of love, the universe Would drive us mad with pain; But we are born into a world That greets our cries with joy. How much I owe you for the kiss That told me who I was! The greatest gift--a love of life-- Lay laughing in your eyes. Because of you my world still has The soft grace of your smile; And every wind of fortune bears The scent of your caress. A Mother s Prayer Author Unknown Dear Lord, it's such a hectic day With little time to stop and pray For life's been anything but calm Since You called on me to be a mom Running errands, matching socks Building dreams with building blocks Cooking, cleaning, and finding shoes And other stuff that children lose Fitting lids on bottled bugs Wiping tears and giving hugs A stack of last weeks mail to read So where's the quiet time I need? Yet when I steal a minute, Lord Just at the sink or ironing board To ask the blessings of Your grace I see then, in my small one's face That you have blessed me All the while And I stop to kiss That precious smile RAFFLE Sponsored by First Church CHILDREN S DISCOVERY CENTER To benefit CHILDREN S DISCOVERY CENTER SCHOLARSHIP FUND TWENTY ONE (21) PRIZES to be AWARDED 1st PRIZE: $ Gift Certificate for a scenic Berkshire flight service, for 3 people for ½ hour, includes picnic basket lunch, redeemable at Berkshire Aviation 2nd PRIZE: Week of Day Camp for one child to Colebrook, CT (Mon.-Fri. 9am-4pm; includes lunch and activities basketball, arts & crafts, canoeing and fishing) at Camp Jewell 3rd PRIZE: 4 Season Tickets redeemable at Norfolk Chamber Music Festival 4th PRIZE: 2 Standard Season Tickets redeemable at Tri Arts Sharon Playhouse 5th PRIZE: 2 Weekend Tickets redeemable at Lime Rock Park 6th PRIZE: $ Gift Certificate redeemable at Getting Off 7th PRIZE: 4 Tickets to a performance of Peter Yarrow redeemable at the Mahaiwe Theater 8th PRIZE: 4 Tickets redeemable at Essex Steam Train and Riverboat 9th PRIZE: Tickets for 2 adults and all household members under age 18 redeemable at Hancock Shaker Village 10th PRIZE: 2 Tickets to a performance of Tracii Guns redeemable at Infinity Hall 11th PRIZE: $50.00 Gift Card redeemable at Home Depot 12th PRIZE: 8 Tickets redeemable at R & B Sport s World 13th PRIZE: 4 Tickets redeemable at The Children s Museum 14th PRIZE: $50.00 Gift Certificate for a Birthday Party Storytelling service for up to 16 children for ½ hour, redeemable with Mary-Elin Renzullo 15th PRIZE: 4 Tickets redeemable at Jump Zone 16th PRIZE: 4 Movie tickets redeemable at Mallory Brook Cinema 9 17th PRIZE: 2 Tickets redeemable at the Connecticut Science Center 18th PRIZE: Monogrammed Towel Set 19th PRIZE: $20 Gift Certificate redeemable at North End Two Guys Pizza 20th PRIZE: 2 Tickets redeemable at the New England Air Museum 21st PRIZE: 2 Tickets redeemable at Quassy Amusement Park DRAWING TO BE HELD: May 22, 2011 at 12:00 pm First Church, 95 N.
