The 95 Theses was an open challenge to debate the Church's practice of indulgences. This document was the spark which began the Reformation. From this Invitation to debate, the Lutheran Church and a number of the protestant churches were formed. Even the Roman Catholic Church experienced its own "reformation." This year marks the 500th anniversary of the posting of the 95 Theses. Lutheran, other protestant, and even the Roman Catholic Church are observing this event that changed the world. In preparation it would be good for us to spend the summer reminding ourselves who we are as Lutherans. Therefore this summer we will have a special summer sermon series entitled "Lutherans Are..." Lutherans Are... 2 Page 2 S U M M E R B I B L E S T U D Y W I T H P A S T O R D A N Come join us Thursday mornings at 10:00am for a "Summer of Mark." Summers are always busy times. Please feel free to join us as you are able. Visitors are always not just welcome, but encouraged. Each class will run about an hour. The Gospel of Mark is thought to be the earliest of the four gospels. In fact, it is thought to be the basis of the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. There were no concerns of plagiarism in the first century. It is also the shortest of the gospels. More than any of the other gospels, the Gospel of Mark concentrates on the story of Jesus rather than the teachings of Jesus. June July August September 1 - Introduction and Chapter Chapter Chapter Chapter Chapter Chapter Chapter Chapter No Class 20 - Chapter Chapter Chapter No Class 27 - Chapter Chapter Chapter Chapter 12 N O T E S F R O M P A S T O R Pastor Dan will be on vacation from Monday, June 12 - Saturday, June 24. If you are in need of pastoral care during that time, please call the Reverend Emily (419) On Pentecost Sunday, June 4, we will celebrate the Confirmation of Caroline Deerwester, daughter of Michael and Rachel Deerwester. Join us as Caroline affirms her baptism in the rite of Confirmation. Congratulations to Hailey Carano, daughter of Christine Bates; Serenity Brumfield, daughter of Matt and Tracie Brumfield; and Sydney Johnson, daughter of Adam and Jennifer Johnson who received their First Communion on Mother's Day, May 14. S P E C I A L T H A N K S T O... Everyone who helped out with WOW this year. Dr. Patty Long who preached while Pastor Dan was at his daughter's graduation. The kitchen staff who served at Paula's Funeral. The musicians (both adults and children) who inspired us with their music this year. Amy Burkett, Chris Hall & Jennifer Stanko who faithfully served on Council this past year and are "retiring. Greg Klein, Doug White, Jennifer Stanko and Dan Farrarr for serving as officers of the congregation this year. To Bob and Sue Reid for planning the Road Rally this year.
3 Page 3 C A L L C O M M I T T E E U P D A T E The Call Committee has presently had the opportunity to review a total of five pastoral profiles. Two of the candidates were interviewed and it was concluded that neither had gifts which matched the needs of our congregation sufficient to warrant further consideration. In addition, two of the candidates became unavailable for an interview with us due to circumstances related to their involvement in the call process with other churches. An interview is scheduled for mid June involving the fifth candidate. Please continue to pray for your Call Committee! Your prayerful support is greatly appreciated. F R O M Y O U R C O U N C I L P R E S I D E N T The current church year comes to an end June 30 th. We owe a special thank you to those council members whose three year term is up at the end of June. A good part of their term was filled with very trying times and required many extra meetings and some sleepless nights. We appreciate their service to our church. Those Council members whose term is coming to an end are Amy Burkett, Chris Hall, Sue Reid, and Jennifer Stanko. The agenda for our May 21 st Congregational Meeting was full and saw many different people elected. New three year term members of Council are Dan Farrar, Joe Hepler, Eric Myers and Sue Reid who returns for a second three year term. Marcia Wright was elected to fill the remaining one year of an incomplete term on Church Council. For Mission Endowment Committee Kathy Corban and Debbie Hoffman were elected to three year terms. To represent our church at the 2018 Synod Assembly we elected Sue Reid and Karl Kalk. The 2018 nominating committee will be Jim Johnson, Greg Klein, Craig Maurer, Deidra Monastra, Jonathan Stuck and Doug White. A budget for the year starting July 1 st was passed by the Congregation as well as approval given for the transfer of $30,000 from the Mission Endowment Fund earnings to the church s general fund to eliminate the deficits that had accrued since There is a congregational challenge line in the budget that will be covered by several initiatives including asking everyone to double their giving on the four fifth Sundays of the month during the year and also a request that once the 2012 Restoration is paid off this fall, that people give that money instead to help cover the ongoing costs of operations of our church. Patty Long Chair, Call Committee Thank you to all of you who serve your church in one way or another and have made things run smoothly this last year and helped us accomplish a lot of good things. 5 Page 5 THE MINISTRY OF GENEROSITY In the second of his letters to the people of Corinth, the Apostle Paul talks about the sharing of resources so that no one in the community has to do without. He inspired generosity when he told them in 2 Corinthians 8:13-15, Our desire is not that others might be relieved while you are hard pressed, but that there might be equality. At the present time your plenty will supply what they need, so that in turn their plenty will supply what you need. The goal is equality, as it is written: The one who gathered much did not have too much, and the one who gathered little did not have too little. Giving is an expression of our faith. It s a way to show our generosity, faithfulness and willingness to help those that Paul described as having too little. For God so loved the world that he gave let s joyfully follow his example and do the same. Giving provides an opportunity to: Connect with others. As with the people of Corinth, giving allows us to rely on one another and help when there s a need. Be part of something bigger. Find a cause that you are passionate about and see how you can be of service to them. Make a difference. Your support can make a direct impact on organizations and the people they serve. There are endless ways to support the causes that matter to you. Giving can be contagious and jump-start a generosity movement throughout your community. Your willingness to give back invites others to do the same. This article provided compliments of Thrivent Financial and David J Zastawny, Financial Associate, , dave.zastawny@thrivent.com.
6 Page 6 C O M M U N I T Y M E A L & C L O S E T St. Paul s welcomed 89 people to our monthly Community Meal on Friday, May 14. In addition to feeding our guests, all were given the opportunity to visit the Community Closet for any clothing needs they might have. It was a picnic atmosphere as attendees enjoyed a dinner of a meatball sub, macaroni salad, chips, cake, and beverage. The cake was donated by a good friend of the congregation. We had only one child on this particular evening, and he was given a backpack, with special surprises in the pockets, to take home as a gift from the church. The Community Closet was visited by many of those who came to eat. We have expanded to separate rooms for men and women s clothing. Your generosity of donations has been wonderful! Thank you! St. Paul s Community Meal and Community Closet provide a free meal and clothing for all on the 2nd Friday of each month. Our next opening is Friday, June 9, from 4:30 to 6:00. Thank you for your prayers and continued support. 9 Page 9 T H A N K Y O U Special thanks to Debbie Hoffman, Jack Hoffman and Sue Ambrosic for helping in planting flowers and spreading mulch around our beautiful sanctuary. If not for them, our grounds would not be as colorful. Thank you to Jim Johnson for ordering mulch to complete the planting process. And a most gracious thank you to Mazzoca s Greenhouse for donating ALL the flowers. Your kindness and generosity has blessed us for so many years. Thank you! Please thank these people when you see them. Enjoy the summer! Dear Pastor & Parish Members, Thank you so much for letting us (St. Mary s Parish) use your church to have Mass & many other services, since our church had a fire and couldn t be used. You worked around the many services you normally do and worked our prayer services in. Many times Father Gretchko would thank God for your generosity and kindness. Your helpfulness went on for about one and a half years. We ask God to send all of you His many blessings. The people we met at St. Paul s Lutheran Church were awesome, caring, helpful & polite. Blessings and Peace, David Stoner We were very blessed to have your offer to use your church starting on the day of the fire.
