1 From the Pastor s Desk Hot fun in the summer time! I am sure we are all enjoying this warm weather and getting as much vitamin D from the sun that we can. Here at Saint Luke Lutheran Church we are gearing up for summer activities. Starting off with our Vacation Bible School scheduled for July 11 th 15 th, the time is 6pm to 7:30pm Monday Friday. We have a wonderful outline of activities for our children including games, crafts, snacks and of course bible stories to bless their souls. Our teachers are preparing and we are all excited and ready to go. We accept ages pre-school to high school. Then on Saturday, July the 16 th is our annual Community Day. We have so many things planned for the day that includes the police department with their K-9 unit, the fire department with their truck, games, free food, give aways, line dancing, singing and much more. You really don t want to miss this huge event that is open to the public. If you would like to participate or volunteer, please call the church office at , leave a message and someone will get back to you. Please don t let this be the only time you fellowship with St. Luke Lutheran Church. We invite you to join us on Wednesday nights for Bible study at 6pm, Sunday school at 9am for children and adults. We have excellent teachers anointed by God to bless you with the Word of God and power. Morning Worship is at 10am and the anointing of God continues in Praise, Prayer and Word. 3 Women s Circle: We usually have a Bible Study, very short business meeting and always have a dessert and great fellowship. We have met at the church on the second Monday of the month at 7pm. In the past we have bought farm animals through ELCA good gifts, packed school kits and personal care kits for LWR, as well as tying fleece blankets, and supporting ECM with their school kits for the children right here in Zanesville. Please come and gather with us as we meet in September. 3

5 St. Luke s Neighborhood Table May 28 and April 30, 2016 Dinner Results Did we meet our goals/objectives with this event? Many have asked if our first two dinners were successful. The answer to this question is, how do you determine success? Just by accepting this challenge, we have found that even through we crossed major hurdles, broke down many barriers and negative thoughts through Christ we have been made strong as together we continue to carry out His work. This has proven to be a great accomplishment for all of us as we faithfully continue doing His will. All things happen in His time... Much Success. Still, we all like to know if our efforts have been worth the final outcome. With this, I have the following statistics available (of which has also been documented to monitor the benefit of the program): APRIL 30: We had 29 volunteers cleaning, setting up, preparing and serving food, and clean-up afterward..15 people were served. Did we meet our budgetary goals? Yes The soup was paid for from the ELCA fund. Bread, and tea was donated. We used the Thrivent card to purchase paper products, silverware, hair nets, gloves and cleaning supplies. Two large 3 x4 double sided outdoor signs for the front and back of the church as well as signage for inside the building were donated. Paper and printing of 100 advertising flyers including envelopes and stamps were donated. Gas and time to pick up all items were donated. Staples for our next event have been donated. Did we have enough volunteers for the event? Yes 29 volunteers cleaning, setting up, preparing and serving food, and clean-up afterward Did we have enough advertising/pr for the event? No, it was decided that we need to hand deliver flyers door to door at: Coopermill Manor and Race Circle as well as the Zane Grey Elementary & Middle Schools. Signs redesigned to show dinner notice to be visible from both sides of oncoming traffic. 5

6 How does this program allow us to grow as a group, officers, and leaders? Was it a good program? The fellowship, fun, laughter, and unity with the 29 volunteers was a blessing for all of us. Out of the 29 volunteers, 6 of the volunteers were not members of St Luke Church. These 6 volunteers helped us from beginning to end with fundraising, setup and serving the dinner. MAY 28: Did we meet our goals/objectives with this event? Yes and no We had 15 volunteers cleaning, setting up, preparing and serving food, and clean-up afterward. We served 40 people in addition to our volunteers. We estimated we would serve 100 since we advertising a week prior to thedinner; but then, it was Memorial Day weekend. The menu: Hot Dogs (Hot Dogs and Buns purchased w/thrivent Funds) Baked Beans (donated by Muskingum Food Network) Macaroni and Cheese (donated by Muskingum Food Network) Cole Slaw (2 heads purchased w/thrivent Funds, 2 heads donated by Shirley Moorehouse) Brownie (purchased w/thrivent Funds) Tea, Koolaid, Water (Koolaid purchased w/thrivent Funds, Tea donated by Shirley Moorehouse) Pastor visited with the people; they thanked her for providing this dinner to the community. Did we have enough advertising/pr for the event? 1. May 20, Friday, Pastor Marjorie gave the principal at Zane Grey Elementary 904 flyers to hand out to all students at both the Zane Grey Elementary and middle school. (flyers printed using the copier at St.Luke.) 2. May 22, Sunday at 1:00, 345 flyers were personally handed out at Coopermill Manor and Race Circle by the following: St Luke member: Kevin & Christine Rahrig, Diane Houston; Volunteers: Jeff Castle, Ami & Eli Howell; Boy scouts: Michael Murphy, Samuel Marlow and Matt Murphy. We talked to many of the residents at the apartment units. One person asked if we were Jehovah Witness or Mormans, when we told them Lutherans, they did a double take. After they regained their composure, they discussed the Bible teachings of Martin Luther. Much fun and unexpected outcomes are realized as we learn to open up to His call. 3. The two 3 x4 double sided outdoor signs were reworked; the dinner notice is now on each side; Now they are visible to both sides of oncoming traffic. Steve Oliver and Jeff Kokensparger joined efforts in painting the signs. Jeff Kokensparger also made a top for each of the signs to add the wording: St. Luke s Neighborhood Table. It all comes together in God s leading. Blessings realized: Prior to dinner on May 29th, at 2:15 pm, a mother (pregnant) and her daughter (age 7) knocked on the side door asking if they could come in to cool off. It was 88º, they both looked red and hot from the heat. They walked from Race Circle to make sure they could find St Luke so they would be able to eat dinner. They were invited in, and they were given three glasses of ice water, followed by cranberry juice and Fritos to eat. The daughter walked up and held out her hand revealing two pennies. She said, this is for you. I was so touched. I told her we appreciated it, but she could keep the coins. Hind sight: I should have taken her to the altar and had her put the coins in the offering plate. What memories would have been instilled on her mind for years to come. Deepest thanks to each of you for so freely volunteering your time, making telephone calls, providing necessary donations, advertising blitzes, sign painting, kitchen prep-work, cooking, picking up supplies, directing visitors, set-up and clean-up. None of your gifts and talents have gone unnoticed; and the most gratifying part is, St. Luke s Neighborhood Table has become a reality. For this we all say, Thank You Jesus!! The final outcome of these events has united us in God s work as we continue to follow in His will, reaching out to those in need. 6
