1 December January Broadview Missionary Baptist Church 2019 Newly Installed Officers Written by Larry Lee A group of faithful men and women continue to answer the call to leadership and will be installed as Officers on January 13, 2019 at the BMBC installation Service. Pastor Marvin G. Parker Verse of the Month Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. 2 Dec - Jan By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another. The following individuals were fellowshipped into the BMBC family during the month of: December - January Marcellus Duff Williams Woods Chapel Choir Annual Christmas Concert Written by Sonja Williams The Chapel Choir hosted its annual holiday musical, Hallelujah to the King of Glory on Sunday, December 23, The evening began with a couple of old standards, Hallelujah, You re Worthy and Thank you, thank you Jesus. As the evening progressed, the choir brought back another and provided a different arrangement of the 23 rd Psalm, The Lord is My Shepherd. It was refreshing, but I still like the arrangement that the Youth Choir used to sing. A new song was introduced, You Need the Lord which was sung by Bro. James Manning. This year s special guest was Love, Salvation and Devotion (LSD), led by long time friend and minister of music, Tyrone Block. Tyrone has a long and powerful legacy in music starting at an early age. One of his first roles was as the director for the 1st Baptist Church in Melrose Park choir. Throughout his musical career, he has worked with various choirs and musical groups including working as a long standing director with the renowned Thompson Community Singers, also known as the Tommies. LSD blessed us with two selections, both leading with short testimonies of how God can heal and why we should worship HIM. Their passion, not just for the music but for the Lord was evident through their finely tuned voices. Every note was made with precision and clarity. It had been a while since I heard them and forgot how strong and powerful the voices were. Another highlight of the evening was centered on the wonderful Christmas Carol selections provided by the orchestra led by Bro. Dwayne Sanders. It was nice to see how he incorporated several young adults from one of the colleges in the Chicago area. The melodious sounds were just what we needed to reflect on the true meaning of the holiday season. There is something about the soothing sound of the violins, flutes and yes, a French horn that lifts the spirits. Overall, the event was pretty good. It would have been nice to include the entire music department, the Drum Line and Wings of Worship to really create a holiday experience to be remembered. Page 2

3 The VOICE Welcome home - Shyvonne Bridges Written by Darlene Price When Shyvonne Bridges received the right hand of fellowship a few months ago, she was no stranger to the BMBC church family. BMBC has been her family s spiritual home as far as she can remember. Her grandfather Lonnie Thomas, a longtime member, has been bringing each generation of family members to BMBC. Shyvonne was first baptized at the age of five. She remembers feeling God s presence and leading throughout her life. Shyvonne became a teenage mom. After losing her job, she and her daughter had to move in with her mom. At one of the lowest points in her life, God encouraged her not to give up. She went back to college and later earned her degree. Shyvonne returned to BMBC in 2014 and was re-baptized along with her daughter. I was at a peak in my career and education. I wanted a family of my own and knew that only the Lord could provide that for me, said Shyvonne. She married in Her husband became abusive and she ended the marriage while pregnant with her second daughter. Shyvonne met and married her current husband in He was an Israelite. She became an Israelite to study some of the truths they convinced her that the white church had wrong. For those who do not know, the Israelites or Black Hebrew Israelites as they are referred to, believe they are the true Jews and only they will be saved. Many only ascribe to the Old Testament in the King James Version of the Bible, along with the Apocrypha. They believe righteousness is achieved by keeping the law, are strict vegans, and permit polygamy. However, they deny the deity of Jesus, do not believe in the Trinity, and are not allowed to associate with sinners-- referred to them as non- Israelites. Being part of a community that followed a life of strict discipline and study was very satisfying, said Shyvonne. However, the community that initially seemed supportive was hiding conflict and malice. Their studies grew unfruitful, arguing over such things as whether Ruth was a Moabite, leadership became contentious and division weakened the sisterhood. When Shyvonne challenged the group s teachings, she was labeled a contentious woman and the men advised her husband to divorce her. The constant interference by the group put enormous stress on her marriage. She and her husband fought constantly. After returning from the Pentecost feast that Shyvonne was not allowed to attend, her husband acknowledged the group was not right, citing teachings and animal sacrifice. Shyvonne would later lose her home and send her daughters to live with her mother while she and her husband stayed with his relatives. She began to attribute her problems to God s disapproval on her life. After about three weeks of staying with her husband s family, she felt the Holy Spirit leading her to return home and repent. As difficult as it was to leave her husband, Shyvonne came back to Chicago, repented, and is seeking God s will for her life. Her husband recently rejoined the family and has agreed to visit BMBC. Shyvonne cites Ecclesiastes 12:13, Until the New Jerusalem, God has purposed His Will to His ways. Nothing will be made to judge until His final judgment is at hand, to lead her back. Shyvonne s experience shows us that we must study God s Word in order to rightly divide the truth, put God first, even before those we love and know that through it all, God never leaves us or forsakes us. 4 Dec - Jan Member Spotlight - Bro. Leslie Hayes Submitted by Valerie Jefferies A few months ago, Mary Watts suggested a few people I should interview for the Voice, and one of them was Leslie Hayes Jr. I always say hello to Brother Hayes, but this is the first time I got to sit down for a good chat. Valerie: Brother Hayes, when did you join Broadview Baptist? Brother Hayes: In My wife was already a member. My son s godfather and I joined at the same time. His name was Tommie McCrane. Valerie: Did you raise all of your children here at BMBC? Brother Hayes: Yes Leslie III and Lafringe Valerie: What are you most grateful to God for? Brother Hayes: My health. That He blessed me with good health and a good mind. Valerie: Did you work on a lot of buildings in the area? Are you a builder? Brother Hayes: Actually, I worked on buildings in downtown Chicago. I was the project manager for the Leo Burnett building on Wacker. It was a $380 million effort to build a 51-story building. I am in the construction profession. I also worked on the first phase of Navy Pier around Valerie: Are you from Chicago? Brother Hayes: No, I was born in Portsmouth, Virginia. My father was in the Navy. Then, I moved to Overland Park, Kansas in That is where I met Sis. Hayes at a church in my community, back in Valerie: What is your favorite scripture? Brother Hayes: John 3:16. Valerie: Both you and your wife have recently been healed by our Almighty Savior. What difference did that make in your life? Brother Hayes: We have always trusted in Christ. It made us witness more. We had a testimony for other people. We travel a lot and meet people. We always look for a church wherever we go and make sure we have a place to honor God. Valerie: When I see you, you look like a church deacon to me? Have you ever been approached for that role? Brother Hayes: Yes, when I first joined, Pastor Hopson approached me but, the type of work I was doing is a business that does not show on the surface. I did not feel that I could get up for church on Sunday mornings. I told him I would do any type of work in the church that he asked me, but I did not think I was ready to be a deacon. Valerie: What do you like best about Broadview? Page 4 Continued on page 5

5 The VOICE Christmas & New Year s Tribute Written By Joshua M. Hicks The Holidays are a special time especially for Christians. Christmas starts the season of giving, passing out gifts, quality time with our loved ones and the commemoration of Jesus birth. Following that comes everyone s celebratory day: New Years. Every time midnight strikes on January 1, we always hear the New Year, New Me chants as the celebrations for entering a New Year begin. However, only a small percentage of people actually follow through on their resolutions. As a matter of fact, according to Forbes, it s only 8%, and the reason why is because they keep their lists basic or simple, making it easier to apply to their lives on an everyday basis. As Christians, we are often reminded that Jesus is the reason for the season, but we always seem to forget to add striving to be a better Christian to our New Years Resolutions. I encourage you all to be different or peculiar people as mentioned in 1 Peter 2:9 and add striving to be a better Christian to your New Years Resolution. We ve all made mistakes, including myself in 2018, and I m sure most of them we aren t too proud of. God knows our faults, as stated in Romans 3:23 that we all have fallen short of His glory, and the punishment for those sins is death, as mentioned in Romans 6:23; but God sent us some good news, and that good news is His Son Jesus Christ, to die on the cross for our sins so we can have eternal life (John 3:16). It is never too late to get your life back on track and strive to be the Christian God wants you to be. God has already forgiven you for your shortcomings and paid the price for your sins. Don t forget that Jesus is the true reason for the season, finish 2018 strong and use 2019 to step up and be a light in a dark world, the Christians God wants us to be. Continued from page 4 Brother Hayes: The reason I joined Broadview was because it is a teaching ministry. I liked that they talk about being saved. I do not hear that everywhere. I like that Broadview sticks to the scripture. Everyone was so friendly, and Pastor Hopson knew everybody s name. It was a different atmosphere at Broadview. I liked that they took up one collection. I was a Methodist before. Broadview had a lot to offer a beautiful choir, and some things I had never seen before in other churches. Valerie: We are about to get a new Pastor and all. Brother Hayes: Pastor Hopson has always said that Broadview is a unique church. Pastor Parker has followed up, keeping the preaching based on scripture. I think we have enough Ministers within Broadview that we can grow with. I am not going anywhere. Whoever is there, God put him there. Valerie: Do you have anything else you would like to share? Brother Hayes: I spent 4 1/2 years in the Marine Core. I was put in the CIA in North Africa for two of those years. I spoke to Sister Hayes only once in those two years, from a nuclear submarine. I went to Spain so I could call her. Sister Hayes went two years without seeing me. So, I came through Chicago when I got out of the marines, and then I came back here. As I wrapped up the interview, I called him Deacon Hayes again. I think Pastor Hopson was on to something, whether Brother Hayes accepted the call or not. It was great to learn about Brother Page 5

On Friday December 21, the Youth Movement led a team in Christmas Caroling at the Garden House Apartments in Maywood. If you didn t go then you definitely missed out. The youth along with Reverend Swope jogged up 10 flights of stairs and were still ready to sing. We walked around the different floors singing Christmas classics like, Feliz Navidad, Little Drummer Boy and Joy to the World. While creating our own beats and jingling our Christmas bells we delivered cards, candy canes and ornaments to each apartment. Afterwards we fellowshipped together, ate delicious food and discussed Christmas plans. Next year, make plans to join us as we share God's love and spread joy through song and gifts! Page 6
