1 Broadview Missionary Baptist Church April: National Child Abuse Prevention Month Submitted by Dea. Larry D. Lee N A T I O N A L CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION MONTH April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month and Broadview Goes Blue (Bold Language Unique Expression) to support it. April has been a time to acknowledge the importance of families and communities working together to prevent child abuse. It was reported that every year over 650,000 children are victims of child abuse. When community programs and systems are engaged and supportive, the majority of child abuse cases can be prevented. Since 2006, BMBC has implemented a Child Protection Plan with the mission to provide a safe and secure environment for the spiritual growth and maturity of children. This plan also strives to minimize the risk of exposing the church, its employees and volunteers to unfounded accusations and allegations of abuse. The Child Protection Committee oversees the plan which requires screening for all employees and members who desire to serve as volunteers in ministries and activities involving children. This year we have several events planned to bring more awareness to Child Abuse Prevention. Submitted by Rev. Christopher C. Robinson, Sr. As we approach the Spring Quarter, beginning April 12, 2016, I hope you have enjoyed and appreciated the idea of knowing the story of God and being challenged to live the story. In April we will add the final layer of Believe with the 10 key Virtues: love, joy, peace, self control, hope, patience, kindness/ goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and humility. Who Am I Becoming? makes us strive to have a character that is befitting Jesus. I look forward to seeing you here on Tuesday and Thursday. Remember to invite others. God Bless. Are you sure of your relationship with God? You can live a better life on earth with assurance of a perfect existence with God in the afterlife. How? By asking God s forgiveness for your sins and then accepting Jesus payment for the penalty of your sins. Call the church office at , Monday through Saturday from 9:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. for more information.
2 Self Liberation in Ecuador Submitted by Eric A. King, Ph. D. The Strategic Ecuador Quattro, a missionary team composed of Robert Taylor, Linda Taylor, Lydia Galan, and me, Eric A. King, Ph.D., embarked on Broadview s third missionary trip to Esmeraldas, Ecuador, South America. The purpose of the trip was to take the gospel to the ends of the Earth, teach the Creation to Christ story, conduct Bible study, and preach God s Word. The missionary work in Ecuador produced twelve converts (Praise the Lord!), and allowed us to visit the villages of Las Penas and El Rompido. We also explored the village of La Tolla, a future missionary site. The inhabitants of these small fishing villages are primarily Afro Ecuadorians, Spanish speaking, and have a rich history. In addition to the missionary work, I focused on gaining more insight into the history of Afro Ecuadorians. Afro Ecuadorians date back to the 16 th Century and their ancestors were brought by the Spanish, during their conquest of Ecuador, from the Incas. Most Afro Ecuadorians are the descendants of enslaved Africans who originally arrived to Ecuador on Spanish slave ships. In 1533, the first enslaved Africans reached Ecuador when a Spanish slave ship heading to Peru was stranded off the Ecuadorian coast. Oral history indicates that four male and five female Africans escaped to the hills from the shipwrecked slave ship and banded together with the indigenous people. According to the book, No Longer Invisible: Afro Latin Americans Today Regional blackness as a force of self-liberation in Ecuador begins in Esmeraldas, and its origin occurs during a violent tropical storm and a movement of African rebellion. The documented history of Ecuador establishes the beginnings of Afro-Hispanic culture in what is now Esmeraldas, Ecuador, where a Spanish slaving ship ran aground in There a group of twenty-three Africans from the coast of Guinea, led by a black warrior named Antón, attacked the slavers and liberated themselves. The enslaved Africans escaped and established maroon (fugitive or runaway) settlements in the remote geography, dense forests and mangroves of Esmeraldas. These settlements became a safe haven for centuries as many Africans fleeing slave conditions escaped there or were forced to live in these remote communities. Intermixture with the indigenous people, to whom black people fled to establish their Palenques (villages of self-liberated people), required the Africans to learn the way of life of the native Ecuadorians prior to being fully embraced by the local Nigua indigenous community. Once the Forgotten People of Ecuador, today the Afro-Ecuadorian population is approximately 1.2 million out of 13.5 million Ecuadorians. Afro-Ecuadorians continue to live in the northwestern coastal province of Esmeraldas and celebrate a rich history. History documents the leadership role the African Maroon leaders, Antón and his successor Alonso de Llescas, played in the 16 th Century. They fought to liberate fellow fugitives from slavery conditions and established communities that included Amerindians and a few Europeans. The self-liberated Afro-Ecuadorians have maintained a distinct identity influenced by the Amerindians, Spanish and deeply rooted in their African culture, customs, music and traditions for over four hundred and fifty years. This is a time to recognize that we each play a part in promoting the spiritual, physical, and emotional well-being of children and their families in our church and communities. A community that cares about early childhood development, parental support, and maternal mental health, is more likely to foster nurturing families and healthy children. During April we encourage you to wear a blue ribbon and attend the events and activities in our church and our communities to increase awareness about child abuse and to discover solutions. We invite all BMBC members to renew their commitment to preventing child abuse and neglect by promoting healthy families, protecting children and supporting our communities. The following individuals were fellowshipped into the Broadview family during the month of March. Please make them feel welcome, watch over them in the spirit of brotherly love, and encourage them to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Doris Hargrove Cynthia Lawrence Jeffery Moses Gabriele Pacheco Elijah White Photos are displayed on the bulletin board, near room M158. The Senior Luncheon will be held on Saturday, April 23, 2016, from 11:30 A.M. 2:00 P.M. The luncheon celebrates BMBC Members age 62 and older. Spouses are allowed even if they are non members. 4 A Marriage Testimony To all Christian marriages; God ordained marriage to His liking. God made marriage for a man and a woman. He told them to be fruitful and multiply; this means to have children. Now man, whom God created in His image, has made his own same sex marriage rule. How can they be fruitful and multiply? If we obey God s rules, a godly marriage can create the best environment for raising children. God gives the marriage everything that it needs to be able to function. Love and commitment are essential to a successful marriage. The romance of a marriage is very important. Marriage can also hold times of great joy. When a husband or wife become unfaithful, it breaks the bond of trust, and shakes the foundation that God has given to the marriage. The relationship is broken and the marriage becomes weak. You can see all the qualities of a successful marriage are gone; no joy, no trust, and no peace. Unfaithfulness ruins the marriage testimony. There is someone who can rectify it. If the husband or wife wants their marriage bonded again. God is the only answer. A marriage is what God ordained and He is the only one who can see we messed up. God will fix it if we let Him. A marriage is a narrow path just like getting to heaven. Remember God is willing and waiting to restore marriages. Marriage Retreat 2016 Pics Submitted by Charles Alexander Anonymous Page 4
