4 October 2018 Baltimore Mission Team Written by Ada Thompson The Mission Team sent to Baltimore, Maryland in August 2018, consisted of Sheila Banks, Geraldine Carter, Julia Cooper, Sheila Finley, Sandy Fleming, RaMona Keith, Jaylyn Kirkendall, Willie McLaughlin, Beverly McLaughlin, Cheryl Sconiers, Rory Wallington and Corey Thompson. The Mission Team assisted, and observed, Christian Liberty Church serving the surrounding community. The team and CLC handed out flyers in the community, visited a men s correctional center (men only), a female teen correctional center (women only), and assisted with the compiling of 345 backpacks with Bibles appropriate to the age of the child. These were to be given at the outreach worship service. The team also assisted with other mission teams from North Carolina with the CLC Fifth Annual Back-2-School outreach. The CLC had a worship service followed by an outreach event. The outreach event consisted of a picnic and the distribution of 345 backpacks to the community. The outreach was called the Fifth Annual Back-2-School Outside the Walls Service. This was held on Sunday, August 19, The CLC typically has worship service out of Frederick Douglas High School. The CLC has purchased a church that is in need of rehabbing. When you hear Pastor Lee s vision of how God has provided for the new place of worship, you actually see and feel the energy with which he speaks. Pastor Lee gives us a glimpse of the facility and shares the vision of the modifications they have planned. Pastor Lee acknowledges all will be done for the glory of the Lord. This is not to bring glory to the CLC but to show God s love within the community. The outreach activities completed in Baltimore proved fruitful and rewarding. Thirty-three person s asked Christ to come into their lives. This is what Missions is all about. Individuals accepting Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. The BMBC Mission Team comes back with praise in their hearts for God has truly blessed CLC of Baltimore, Maryland. Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ, Philippians 1:6 KJV. Pastor Wayne Lee and the Christian Liberty Church (CLC) family certainly bring this scripture to life. Page 4
5 The VOICE Youth Mental Health First Aid Workshop Knowledge is Power Written by Darlene Price According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), 1 in 5 youth ages live with a mental health condition. 50% of students age 14 and older with a mental illness drop out of high school. 70% of youth in the state and local justice system have a mental illness. 90% of youth ages who committed Suicide (the 3rd leading cause of death for this age group) had an underlying mental illness. When you consider these alarming numbers, and the fact that only about half of the youth with mental illness receive treatment, you can see that youth are experiencing a mental illness crisis. These statistics haven t escaped Broadview s Crisis Intervention Team. Under the leadership of Director - Counseling Ministry, Kathi L. Nevels, LPC, NCC, the team is presenting its second Mental Health First Aid workshop, this one focusing on youth. Led by instructors Dorothy Papachristos and Robert Skroki of NAMI, the course taught participants the risk factors and warning signs of mental health challenges common among adolescents, including anxiety, depression, psychosis, eating disorders, AD/HD, disruptive behavior disorders, and substance use disorder. Participants learned the core five-step action plan for supporting youth exhibiting signs of mental illness or emotional crisis that include: Assess for risk of suicide or harm Listen nonjudgmentally Give reassurance and information Encourage appropriate professional help Encourage self-help and other support strategies Attendees, who primarily work with youth, including members of the Youth Movement, Sunday School, Crisis Intervention, and VBS, expressed a desire to learn how to identify early stages of mental illness and intervene on behalf youth they encounter. To help attendees identify symptoms, they engaged in exercises to identify mental illnesses symptoms and the populations most impacted. Attendees were also provided with information on mental health resources. Dorothy Papachristos, who has fostered 40 youth, mostly gang members, teaches the class because she wants the stigma of mental illness to be erased. She said youth need to feel secure, receive early intervention, and have someone they can talk to without being judged. Robert Skroki, who works for Samacare in Naperville, helps churches develop mental health ministries. He wants to help churches provide support to the mental health community, teach members to approach someone exhibiting signs, and get them linked to support so they don t feel isolated and ashamed. If you work with youth or have family members between the ages of 11 25, check out NAMI s website for additional information. Page 5

A Great Work Brian Courtney Wilson Lasting Impressions, a Youth Mentoring Journey Submitted by Danielle Bush For some young people, there is a perceived disconnect between them and older generations in the church. They feel as though they do not have a deep connection with those who can advise them on how to walk with God on a daily basis. Seeing this disconnect, God has inspired me to develop a program to address this situation by providing Godly mentors to assist and guide our youth through the test, trials and decision making that will come with growing up. The driving principle of Lasting Impressions is relationships. We as Christians, serve a God who manifests himself in the relationships of his people, a God who gave us Ten Commandments on how to govern our lives and relationships. The program has a peer to peer focus. It will use God s precedent and apply it to the youth of Broadview, by creating, developing, and strengthening relationships between youth and Godly mentors. This will be accomplished by recruiting young adults ages and provide training and coaching on how to interact with youth in a positive and impactful manner. After a mentor has completed a thorough three-month training class, child protection class, and an interview process, they will be paired up with a young person to apply their training in a way that will leave a Lasting Impression and build a long term relationship in the lives of young people. 7 The VOICE Recommended Reading Submitted by The Library Ministry Bringing the Gospel Home: Witnessing to family members, close friends and others who know you well by Randy Newman The Power of Praying Parents by Stormie Omartian The Family Book of Christian Values: Timeless Stories for Today's Family by D. Stuart Briscoe Building Strong Families By William Mitchell Accept others, as Christ has accepted us, to God be the glory, Romans 15:7, the scripture for the third participatory Back To Church Sunday (BTCS) outreach. The overall theme being You Belong Here, meaning part of a community of believers in Christ. After all the preparation: praying, banners, engagers, posters, hundreds of postcards being mailed or passed out, Facebook, texting and tweeting. The BTCS outreach efforts were greatly rewarded because several persons reinstated their membership and one accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. To God be the glory as we had one baptism candidate. Page 7
