Traditionally the second Sunday in May, mothers throughout the country are showered with flowers, served breakfast in bed, lovingly honored, or in some cases appropriately ignored. It will be especially hard for office staff, on this Mother s Day, as Carolyn played such an important roll in our office and became an adopted Mother to us all..certainly a bittersweet paradoxical day. For most, it is a time to reminisce about the days when Mom was there to support, love and protect us. It can be a sad day, though, when the mother who once loved us is no longer living. Then, there are those who weren t blessed with a loving mother. In some cases, she just wasn t around. In others, Mom was neglectful or even abusive. For children in that category, Mother s Day is sometimes even painful. Another category to which Mom s Day is not so joyful are the many young women who would love to have a child, but aren t able to conceive. Year after year they struggle as friends all around them bear children. It somehow doesn t seem fair to be deprived of something so easy for so many. And, tragically, Mother s Day is almost unbearable for those who have lost a child....continued next page 1

2 Continued from page 1 So, I have mixed feelings when I am preparing my sermon and prayers for Mother s Day Sunday. I want to honor all of those women who have lavished love on their children but I want to be sensitive to those for whom the day is one of loss and pain. In my own case, I mark the passing of my own mother who died several years ago, but I rejoice and revel in the gift of my own precious daughter. 3 Cookies At Gate A-4 I was wandering around the Albuquerque airport. My flight had been delayed, and I heard an announcement: If anyone near Gate A-4 understands Arabic, please come to the gate immediately. Gate A-4 was my own gate. I went there. An older woman was crumpled on the floor, wailing. In her traditional Palestinian embroidered dress, she reminded me of my grandmother. Talk to her, urged the gate agent. We told her the flight was going to be late, and she did this. I stooped to put my arm around the woman and spoke haltingly. Shu-dow-a, shu-bid-uck, habibti? Stani schway, min fadlick, shu-bit-se-wee? She stopped crying. She thought the flight had been canceled. She needed to be in El Paso for a medical treatment the next day. I said, You ll get there, just late. Who is picking you up? Let s call him. We called her son. In English, I told him that I would stay with his mother until we got on the plane. She talked with him. Then we called her other sons just for fun. Then we called my dad, and they spoke for a while in Arabic and found out that they had ten shared friends. After that, I called some Palestinian poets I know and let them chat with her. She was laughing a lot by then, patting my knee, answering questions. She pulled a sack of homemade mamool cookies - little crumbly mounds stuffed with dates and nuts and topped with sugar - from her bag and offered them to the women at the gate. To my amazement, no one declined. It was like a sacrament. The traveler from Argentina, the mom from California, the lovely woman from Laredo - we were all smiling, covered with the same sugar. I looked around that gate and thought, This is the world I want to live in. One with no apprehension. This can still happen anywhere, I thought. Not everything is lost. Knowing my tough-to-spell last name would give him fits, I said, Just put down Sergeant Gary, as my last name is too hard. The next day, I received a letter addressed to Sgt. Gary Toohard. 5 Session Highlights Deacons Carolyn Saul & Yvonne Kilpatrick continue in their recovery process from their health issues & we welcome them back as they are able to resume their duties. The deacons are making personal contact with church members & church friends to meet the needs of our congregation. Our Commissioned Ruling Elder, Gary Adler continues to be an exceptional asset to our pastoral staff. He serves communion to our shut-ins, makes home visits, and assists Pastor Nancy & Pastor Cindy as needed. In an effort to relieve some of the congestion in the narthex prior to the beginning of Sunday services, the Worship committee is experimenting with reducing Sunday morning greeters assignments except for special events such as: Christmas Eve, Easter, & Special Services. Lay readers, ushers, & communion servers for May have been selected. Food donations for the Food Basket totaled 211 pounds, which included both food purchased from money collected from the copper kettle and food donations from the congregation. A potluck dinner is being planned for Pentecost Sunday after church services on May 24 th. Pastor Nancy will celebrate the 20 th anniversary of her ordination in August and the Mission committee is in discussion on how to celebrate this occasion. Sixty-five meals were served to the Christian Clinic staff in March. The Garden Getaway Party Women s Retreat was a great success with thoughts of repeating something similar next year. Work is proceeding to adopt another local family on a short -term basis. As their needs are assessed, we will determine how best we might assist this family. More information will be coming soon. The session joyfully approved the request of Michael & Barbara Pedraza to become members of the church. Their introduction & presentation to the congregation was Sunday, April 26th. Please greet them & introduce yourselves. WHY HOSPITALS ARE EMBRACING COPPER Hospital-bed railings can transmit infection-causing bacteria to patients, but in a trial at three U.S hospitals, introducing handrails made with copper which naturally kills bacteria, yeasts, and viruses lowered infection rates by 58 percent. The trial hospitals and others are considering switching more surfaces to copper. An Iowa hospital, for example, has already installed everything from copper light-switch plates to toilet flushers. FOODS MAKING YOU FORGETFUL A known heart threat, trans fat found in foods like margarine and cookies may also mess with memory. In a recent study presented at an American Heart Association meeting, researchers evaluated the trans fat consumption of about 1,000 healthy men and gave them memory tests. Each additional gram of trans fat eaten per day was linked to poorer performance on the test. A Summer Special Music sign-up sheet: is located on the bulletin board in the Fellowship Hall.
