We received the results of our Congregational Life Survey and get this compared to the average Presbyterian church, this congregation is much more involved in the community!

1 August 2016 THE FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH of the CITY Of CAPE MAY THE VISITORS CHURCH FOR OVER A CENTURY THE OPEN DOOR From the Interim Pastor - I don t know about you, but I need some good news. Well, I just happen to have some! We received the results of our Congregational Life Survey and get this compared to the average Presbyterian church, this congregation is much more involved in the community! 67% of those who participated in the survey are involved in social service or advocacy groups in the community and 88% contribute to charitable organizations other than the congregation. Yes, this congregation has some challenges and we ll talk more about that. For now though, it s important to accentuate the positive. As this congregation takes a realistic look at itself, the primary challenge will be to identify strengths and build upon them. In the strange and wonderful book of Revelation, one of the churches is told to, strengthen the things which remain. A contemporary translation might read, do the best you can with what you ve got! One of the foundations this congregation has is a significant number of people who value their community and want very much for the church to be actively involved in it. I think this congregation has every right to be proud of what it has done and is doing for the community. As this dimension of ministry is fortified there is every reason to be hopeful about the future! Now ain t that Good News. Amen! Regards and Peace, Rev. 4 FOOD CLOSET REPORT In June, our distributions were as follows: 111 Adults, 25 children and 84 families THE FOOD CLOSET BAG HAND OUT AFTER CHURCH WAS A SUCCESS. A great big thank you for the wonderful generosity of 1st Presby members and friends filling up FC bags. We ve received over 25 bags full of needed items. We were especially low on spaghetti and paper goods, but thanks to their donations, we have enough for the next 2 distributions. Thanks so much to everyone who donated or still plans to do so! We are in need of plastic grocery bags with working handles and no holes. We especially like the yellow ShopRite plastic bags. They are a bit stronger and a great size for the paper bags (we have lots of the paper bags!) we put inside them. This double bag system provides stability and strength for bags making it to those to whom we deliver and for folks who come and get their bags. You can leave them upstairs or leave them in a cart outside the FC door. We encourage FC neighbors to bring back their FC bags and also would appreciate you donating them to us. You recycle them and we will reuse them. HOUSEHOLDS RECEIVING PUBLIC ASSISTANCE 2016 Cape May County 5,927 - Hugh Blair STEWARDSHIP We have been contacted by a friend of the Church who wishes to remain anonymous. This person wishes to establish a challenge grant to help with the recent costs of repairs and conformance to fire code expenses. This friend challenges our members to raise $5000 by October 31st, this above tithes and offerings and our friend will match that amount dollar for dollar. Please spread the word about this generous offer and help as you can. Donations should designate CHALLENGE 2016 on the memo line. 5 The Dickens Yuletide Bazaar November 12, :00 AM 2:00 PM BAZAAR NOTES Several members of our bazaar team have been searching and thinking about the kinds of projects that might be helpful to our November Dickens Yuletide Bazaar displays and sales. Since we are having some success, we have scheduled our FIRST CRAFT WORKSHOP for Thursday, August 18th in the Wedgewood Room at 10:00 AM. We invite all of you, our church members and friends, to come to the workshop to see our projects. Always looking for help, we would love to have you decide to join us in our planning of holiday crafts and maybe you could bring us some ideas of your own! We anticipate that the projects we select will be broken down into do-able sections so you won t be overwhelmed by what you would be asked to do. On the other hand, we know that many of you are experienced in doing various crafts. We welcome you all with open arms! JEWELRY AND HOLIDAY COLLECTIONS STARTING As we approach our bustling and involved weeks before the bazaar, we will be looking for contributions from our members and friends. Today, we ask you to bring in any jewelry you might have decided you no longer wear. If possible, give it to our jewelry guru, Annie Szulczewski. We will also have a carton marked For Jewelry in the lounge. Other items we are collecting now are still-attractive Christmas ornaments and any smaller decorative holiday pieces to near-perfect condition. Again, a carton will be placed in the lounge for Christmas items. Thank you! * * * BAZAAR MEETING Our next bazaar meeting is scheduled for Sunday, August 28th between services. If you cannot attend, please let me know and provide me with any changes, corrections or updates to your booth agenda. All interested persons are invited to come to our meeting and to join our team! If you the office and receive no reply, we are experiencing internet problems. A big thank you to Jane Senico who has spent numerous hours dealing with this issue (and continues to do so). Bear with us it will get straightened out.

6 BUILDING AND GROUNDS REPORT In the past month, we have had to replace the coils of two air conditioners at a cost of $7,000. We have gotten our first bid for installing a new monitored fire alarm system as required from our last fire inspection, and we will be getting a second bid shortly. The first was $5500. This new system has to be installed by December 31st, A sprinkler system is also required and the Fire Marshall is giving us until June 20th, 2018 to have that installed. We have replaced the toilets in the ladies room, the handicap toilet was leaking severely and the other toilet was not anchored properly so a new one was installed at a cost of $1,000 (in addition to the $700+ water bill from the leak). The dungeon area of the basement will be cleaned out the end of October. If you have anything in there that you want or must be saved, mark it with your name and phone number or it will go. We will be asking for volunteers to help with this cleanup and will put out a call as time approaches.
