1 Hello Parkman, MA D IS ON ROAD P.O. B OX 655 P A R K MAN, OH P A R K W IN D S T R E A M.NET O N T H E WEB: P A R K MANCHURCH. COM 9 : 0 0 AM - S UNDAY S C H OOL C L A S S E S 1 0 : 0 0 AM - F ELLOWSHI P T I M E 1 0 : 3 0 AM - WORSHI P SE R VIC E W I L L C OLEY, P A S T O R Paul starts off chapter 5 of his letter to the Ephesians with this, be imitators of God therefore, as dearly loved children and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. We are called to be imitators of God in all things. This seems like an impossible command, yet for some reason we see Paul saying this more than once in his letters to the churches. (see 1 Corinthians 11:1 as another example) 1 Peter 1:14-16 urges us not to act like we did before we followed Christ, but to be holy in our behavior as God is holy. Imitating God seems like an impossible goal. Why would Paul as well as Peter command us to imitate God when it seems like such a lofty goal? Who can be that good on their own? Honestly, that s the point. No one can be this good on their own. We are all sinners in the hands of an angry God. Yet, this is exactly the reason that Paul spent the first half of his letter reminding the church in Ephesus, as well as us today, of all that God had done to bring about reconciliation with His creation. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. (Ephesians 2:8-10) For those who have had their eyes opened by the Lord, they are God s workmanship, they are no longer their own, they were bought with a price. When looking at the scriptures though, you have to notice that you weren t just bought with a price to sit comfortably in the pew for an hour or so a week, you were bought with a price for a purpose; a purpose that is fulfilled when we submit our lives to God and allow Him to work through us. This has been something that the church has struggled with since the beginning. Disciples in 2017 struggle with the same thing that disciples in 33 AD struggled with we are still humans, we are still imperfect. This is why we gather together as a body of believers and we wrestle with the word of God. This is why we gather together as believers and hold one another accountable in a way that is gentle, humble, patient and loving. So here s the question; what s kept you from being an imitator of the Lord? What s kept you from giving God all of yourself, which compels you to go out loving all of those around you? What s kept you from looking different from the world around you? I bet we could come up with countless answers to the question of what s kept us from being imitators of the Lord. Unfortunately as disciples we have to realize that all of our excuses fall short of what we have been commanded to do. Commanded because as regenerated, aka born again, individuals we realize that we aren t alone anymore. We realize that as a part of the body of Christ we have a family that stretches, encourages, teaches, holds up one another in order that we as a whole look more and more like the creation we were intended to be. The challenge for us as we go on from here is this let s start looking like the body of Christ here in Parkman. Let s start coming together so that we can build, stretch, pick up, and encourage one another in our walks with the Lord. But let s also go out as we are commanded, allowing God to work through us, bringing the light of our Lord into a lost and dying world, showing the world how awesome our Lord is. Knowing that God s will, will be done as we trust and obey. God Bless Pastor Will Parkman Congregational Church
2 As we dive further into Paul s letter we are going to see something powerful - we are going to see that the body of Christ is not just like a family, it is a family. This is why Paul uses the symbolism of husbands and wives in chapter 5 and we will see him use the symbolism of parents and children in chapter 6. When you think of a family though, what comes to mind? (Parents, children, husbands, wives, siblings, etc.) In the body of Christ we are all brothers and sisters, yet there is a hierarchy because you have a spiritual parent, yet at the same time, you also have spiritual children. This is what being a disciple is all about. When God opens our eyes, we need to plug ourselves into a local body of Christ so that we can learn more about what God commands us. We don t just get plugged in to a local body to learn more though, we plug in so that God can use us in that body to bless the body, and on the flip side, we plug in so that God can use the body to bless us. What s keeping you from committing to the local body of Christ?
