1 First Things A Newsletter of the First Reformed Church, Schenectady, New York May 2017 Avery Presents Silent Movie Friday, May 5 On Friday, May 5 at 7pm in the Sanctuary, we will show the silent comedy movie "The Nut" starring Douglas Fairbanks. This is a story of a man who will do almost anything to win the affection of the girl he loves. It turns out that he might take that a little too far as countless mishaps occur. This movie is part action/drama, part comedy and part love story. Please join us for what will be an evening of laughs! Live accompaniment by Avery Tunningley. Reception to follow. Chancel Choir to Sing at Harriet Tubman Concert May 13 All are invited to the annual Harriet Tubman Concert and Celebration at Duryee AME Zion Church, 311 Hulett St., at 5pm on Saturday, May 13. First Reformed has a key connection with this AME Zion congregation. The Church was organized in 1837 by Isaac Duryee, who was a member of First Reformed and a student at Union College. Isaac was a firm abolitionist, was later ordained in the Reformed Church, and returned to Schenectady in 1852 to launch Schenectady's Second Reformed Church. He served as a Chaplain in the Civil War and died in service in In the later 1800 s the congregation named the church in his memory. This invitation to participate in the annual event stems from a shared Martin Luther King Sunday service held at First Reformed several years ago. This is the fourth occasion our Chancel Choir will participate. A freewill offering will be taken to maintain the Harriet Tubman House in Auburn, NY that is owned and operated by the AME Zion Church.
3 Bike to Church Month Join the fun; get your blood flowing, lower your carbon foot-print: cycle to services Sunday morning this merry month of May! Lock up your bike along the inside of our wrought iron gate and enter the courts of the Lord with praise--and a good pulse. On May 21, pack a lunch, fill your water bottles, ride to worship, and join fellow cyclists on the Mohawk Bike Hike Trail after service, stopping at the Niskayuna Train Station for a rest and lunch. Those who wish to extend the frolic will continue to the impressive Cohoes Falls, concluding with refreshments at the Albany Pump Station. Most will catch a lift on CDTA Bus Plus back to Schenectady, but a few healthy ones will return home on their steel steeds. Questions: contact your peddling Pastor Daniel. Just the Facts Sunday Refreshments A few changes in refreshments around Sunday morning worship. Dirck Romeyn room will house treats and beverages. 5 Roots and Wisdom Covenanter Chris Li Dear Members of the FRC, Happy May! Roots & Wisdom is in full swing by this time of the year. Our greenhouses are full of seedlings, planted by our youth participants and volunteers. As soon as the soil outside warms up enough, the seedlings will be transplanted into our gardens. We are also getting ready for our summer program, which takes 20 high school students from Schenectady County. The program teaches participants about sustainable agriculture, community engagement, job skills, and more through cultivating our gardens for six weeks. As we move through Lent and toward the Easter season, we want to offer inspiring books about hope, sacrifice, & triumph through adversity. Stop by after church and submit your ideas at the Faith Bookshop (now conveniently located in the Heritage Room) or them to us at cmjones514@gmail.com. 6 Justice Action Council Paraphrasing Bill McKibben, author, educator and environmentalist, after being asked, What can I do? He responded, Join a community of likemind people and stand up for what you believe in. What is important to you? What are you willing to speak out for? We cannot become complacent. Start by acting locally, attend a Town Hall or School Board meeting, there are groups meeting to take next steps in Healthy Foods availability in the City, another group working on literacy in the City schools, How should our church react if someone asked for sanctuary in our church? There are many ways we as individuals can put Justice in Action. How do you show Justice in Action? Contact Consistory Members Jeanne Shoulder jmshoulder@hotmail.com; Liz Mastrianni lzmastro@gmail.com. We meet the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 6:30pm, before Consistory meetings, but as Joe Doolittle called us, we are a Virtual Committee we notify each other of events and actions we can participate in, as we are called to Do Justice. Pentecost June 4: Wear Red Senior Moments Dr. Bill Levering Spring is a busy time for nature and a busy time for us. We are extra busy at the church this May. We have said goodbye to great church staff members Stacey Midge and Judy Moore and are working hard to find new help. We are poised to start our dramatic renovations and teams are meeting weekly for that. There are still one or two projects that remained unfunded in the renovation and if you would like to sponsor the garden patio or the landscaping improvements, you will have a chance this summer. We had banner attendance at worship lately and we hope you are a part of it. Remember that you can park in the YWCA lot only a block away if the others are full. It s the time of the year to plan for our leadership, so please take a moment to nominate someone you think would help us move forward as a congregation. We also need folks to serve on search committees and to chip in to volunteer as we look for staff. On a more serious note, I know that many are discouraged, fearful, or want to tune out when they read the news. If you are wondering how to respond to the swirl of dubious information or the threat of war, remember that through the ages people have turned to the church to remind us all of what is important and to give us wisdom and courage for the facing of these hours. To turn my benediction into an invitation: Come in from the world to find peace. Remember how to return good for evil. Find strength for your faint heart. Discover God s redemption of your weakness. Hear the blessings of God the Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer. Daniel and I will be working on some long-term planning with the consistory to help us understand what our staff needs are for the future, and what our congregation is looking for in worship and in ministries to our congregants of every age. We are fortunate to be able to have the stability and enthusiasm to be creative about what God is doing in Schenectady. If you have dreams and ideas, we would love to hear them. Blessings on your spring.
