The month of September often brings to remembrance September 11 th An unforgettable day in America s history an unforgettable day in America s growth. Time magazine called it a day of infamy, a day of carnage, injustice, and slaying of the innocent. However, there is another side to our day of infamy, for times of great catastrophe also bring prayer, tears, and champions. Where life is lost on a massive scale, people respond with massive prayer, and the day takes on a sacred presence. September 11 th was, indeed, a day filled with massive amounts of prayers and tears, as faces covered with blood cried out from the rubble while the face beside them lay silent in death. But it was also a day filled with champions, unbelievable acts of bravery and sacrifice... people helping people carrying one another to safety from burning towers people helping people digging, shoveling, tugging, lifting, to pulling others to safety from a mountain of concrete and steel people helping people by flooding centers to donate life-giving blood people helping people by giving their own lives as they purposely crashed a jet liner in an unpopulated area September 11 th was above all else a day where a few people who wished to hurt brought out a multitude of people who wished to help, a day where the worst of humanity, brought out the best of humanity, a day where sinners and saints came together in a surrealistic mixture of horror and heroism. God bless America. 4 BSUMC Financial Meeting August 12, 2018 Members Present: Amy Parnell, Margaret Hodges, Jerry Jacobs, Debbie Lewallen and Wayne Mowry. Members Absent: Cathy Long, Curt Bryant, Everette Long, Wade Fox, Lee Kothe, and Pastor Pete Beevers. Chairman Amy Parnell called the meeting to order at 10:16 AM. Jerry Jacobs said a prayer. Minutes from the June 10, 2018 meeting were read and approved. FINANCIAL REVIEW Copies of the July expenses and income were reviewed. o It was clarified that the amount listed for Operating Account total in the Asset section includes the general fund money and designated funds money. Debbie Lewallen questioned if reports could be changed to display general fund and designated fund monies in the Assets section separately. Margaret said she wasn t sure if the membership program could be programmed to separate them. Reports will remain in the present format. o Margaret explained that we are now paying in state taxes on the new secretary s wages. UNFINISHED BUSINESS Wayne Mowry reported job descriptions are completed. Wayne Mowry will submit necessary information for the paying of the summer church accompanist. NEW BUSINESS The SPRC committee inquired on the financial stability of the church for a possible pastor s salary increase. Budget submissions by committee chairs are due to Amy Parnell by September 16, Next meeting will be October 14, 2018 at 10:30 AM. Meeting was adjourned at 10:50 AM. 6 UMW General Meeting August 14, 2018 President Cathy Long called the meeting to order at 1:02 P.M. There were 9 Bull Shoals members and 3 attendees from Yellville present. Prayer concerns/praises were taken and raised in prayer by Connie Zonick. Missions and birthdays were recognized. Connie read the last letter from Peter for the scripture reading. Program Edie Hampton presented the program on The Call This is a program sponsored through churches to recruit and train volunteers for fostering children. They work with the Dept. of Children & Family Services but do not receive funding. All money is through donations and used for the needs of the foster children. There are presently 4 homes trained in Marion County and the goal is to add at least 4 more. There are currently 8 foster children. Sandy Labahn will present the program on UMW Sunday. A $50 honorarium was given to this program. Correspondence A thank you cards were received from Flippin Elementary backpack program, Kindness Inc. for the salad luncheon love offering, Gamma House for our monthly support, the Presbyterian women for our salad luncheon and a flyer from Red Bird. Officer/Committee Reports June s salad luncheon report was approved as published in the monthly newsletter. Treasurer Judy Satterfield reported a balance of $ Cathy Long reported all required reports to the conference have been submitted. Judy Satterfield gave a brief summary of a Response article. Judy Satterfield will be adding new books for the reading program. Unfinished Business The District Meeting will be held in Greenwood on October 13. Registration is online. Contact Cathy if interested. New Business Election of officers will be held in October. Discussion was held on whether we need all the offices. It was decided that we will eliminate the Member Nurture & Outreach position. The Pledge was read. Meeting adjourned at 2:30 P.M. Announcements: Mission Study setup on September 10 at 1:00 P.M. Mission Study - September 11 from 9 A.M.-2:00 P.M. Lunch is included.
