We are happy that Rev. Bigelow will lead us in this worship service. A variety of special music will also be a part of this service. All are invited to attend a breakfast that will take place in the fellowship hall following the worship service. Please encourage your friends and family members to attend this service to honor our Veterans. 3 Operation Christmas Child: The Power of a Simple Gift It may seem a little early to think about Christmas, but, it s coming! We are so excited about working with our friends from the Dexter Methodist Church on the 2017 Operation Christmas Child. The shoeboxes travel to children around the world at Christmas time. Boxes are set up and information materials are available on how to pack a shoebox and possible gift suggestions you may consider. The collection of shoeboxes will take place from November 13 through November 20. The shoeboxes will be dedicated at our worship service on Sunday, November 19. Please remember to place the cost for postage in the envelope provided; the cost has increased this year to $9.00. Let s bring God s grace and love with each box donated. Thank you in advance for your help and love. We thank Denise Marshall for her willingness to oversee the 2017 project! 5 Consistory Highlights from October, 2017 Committee Reports: Kitchen - 81 dinners were served in October. The Health Department inspector was here last week, but Pati was not. We expect them back the week following the Rummage Sale. Building We are in the process of painting the garage and replacing the doors thanks to a generous donation of painting services. We will also need to have some minor repairs made to the kitchen ceiling in the parsonage. Christian Education The Wednesday Afternoon Ladies Bible Study continues and Sunday School will resume on the First Sunday of the Month. In November we will be participating in Operation Christmas Child, filling boxes of items for children. Fellowship More than 50 people attended our Harvest Festival Potluck Dinner on the 15 th with a menu of Sauerkraut and Knoeffles. Thanks to Deb Phillips for supplying the knoeffles. Mission and Outreach Karen McIlroy will update the Consistory on the Crop Walk at the next meeting and she will work with Denise and Joanne on Operation Christmas Child. Memorial Board Discussion was held regarding the balance showing on the Financial Report of money owed to the Memorial Fund from a CD cashed many years ago. It was decided that the Board should meet to discuss this issue. Pastoral Relations The Committee met and has a recommendation of Kendall Brown as our Interim Pastor. Consistory accepted the recommendation and voted to meet with him and discuss the position. New Business Consistory passed a motion to contact Need-a-Hand (our Church cleaning crew) to give us a bid for cleaning of the parsonage for the interim who will stay there part of the week; we will hold a Veterans Day Service as in the past on Sunday, November 12, and Ron Klumpp has offered to fix breakfast after the service. Pledge Sunday Long time members of St. Andrew s may remember that on one Sunday in the fall, we had the Pony Express system to collect giving pledges for the coming year. Over the years, the pledge drive faded away. Without some sort of indication as to what our weekly, monthly, or yearly giving will be, it is very difficult to plan a budget for the church. We are reinstating the pledges and will do so on Sunday, November 26. Along with the pledges, you will be asked to fill out a Time & Talent sheet regarding ways that you can help the church by the giving of your time and abilities to the various church projects and committees. 5

6 Notes of Thanks and Appreciation The following note was received in the church and was addressed to the members of the Piecemakers Quilting Group: Hello my name is Frances Persinger. I am 20 years old and this is a message for the peacemakers. I just want to let you guys know how thankful I am when I received a blanket/quilt from U of M after having my son via emergency C-section at 25 weeks due to severe preeclampsia on 03/16/17 and sadly he passed away 3 days after I had him. I couldn t tell you how much this blanket means to me. I sleep with this blanket and it helps me so very much with my grieving. I just wanted to let you guys know thank you so very much for everything you guys do for so many people. I know it has helped me very much and I truly appreciate it. 7 Thanksgiving Worship Service Planned On Wednesday, November 22 nd, at 7 p.m., the Dexter Ministerial Association will hold an ecumenical Thanksgiving Eve worship service. The service will be held at St. James Episcopal Church, 3279 Broad Street. Reverend Tom Snyder will deliver the Thanksgiving message. A free will offering will be collected and the proceeds will benefit Dexter Family Services. Church Office Closed on Thanksgiving Day The church office will be closed on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 23 th. In case of a pastoral emergency outside of regular office hours, please contact one of the following Elders: Scott Marshall can be reached at (734) or Gerri Van Doren can be reached at (734) The church answering machine is available for matters that are not urgent but will need attention when the staff returns. It will be checked remotely throughout the day. The staff of St. Andrew s Church wishes all of you a peaceful Thanksgiving holiday! Ongoing Mission and Outreach Projects Faith In Action Sundays The first Sunday of the month has been designated Faith in Action Sunday for the collection of food items and personal items for the Dexter Food Pantry of Faith in Action. Drop off locations can be found in the narthex and in the fellowship hall for your donations. Each month we will publish in the Chronicle items that are needed. The food pantry can use most non-perishable items and household cleaning products. They will even accept frozen meats. All donated items are appreciated. Below are the items in most need. FOOD ITEMS IN THE MOST NEED FOR NOVEMBER Jelly Chunky Soups Refried Beans Kidney Beans Baked Beans Gravy/Broth Carrots (Canned) Beef Stew (Canned) Sliced Potatoes (Canned) Canned Pasta (i.e. Chef Boyardee) Salad Dressings (i.e. Italian, Ranch, etc.) Please note The Dexter Pantry has relocated to 7275 Joy Rd. and has re-opened in its new space. It is right next to the Canine Sports. Any items you wish to donate are appreciated. A good place to shop for non-brand items is the Dollar Stores or Dollar isles at the grocery store. Seasonal clothing can be donated to the Chelsea office as well as any medical equipment. Want to be a volunteer, contact Faith in Action at or visit their website at The Chelsea facility is open Monday-Friday and the Dexter Food Pantry is open on Wednesday afternoons. 7

8 St. Andrew s Angels A few years ago we established the St. Andrew s Angels. This is for donations to be used at the church for supplies to help defray costs and expenses. We will publish in the Chronicle the current list of needed items. This month we are in need of: For the Church office: Medium and Large Size Binder Clips For the Church building: Boxes of Kleenex Rummage Sale Update Thank you to all who helped with the Rummage Sale what looked like a small amount of items on the 16 th when we first started putting items out, multiplied like the loaves and fishes by the time Friday came. The crowds were great. The amount from sales is nearly $3, and $358 from the bake sale (wonderful pretzels) for a total of over $4, Many worked a great deal during the week and the help is greatly appreciated. Plans are to have a spring sale in May and yes, the hot dogs will be back.
