January 2017 Commanders Corner From the desk of the Commander Hardin Post 113 What a fast and successful 2016 for the Legion! Sometimes I have to ask myself, where did the year go?

We all stayed busy with parties, volunteering, WWII / Korean Veteran Lunch and our New Year s Eve celebration with the Bar Nuns.

January 5th is our General Membership meeting. Prior, during and after the meeting I look forward to interacting with everyone.

A nomination committee will be established this month in preparation for nominating Post officers for 2017/2018. Please consider running for office and put your own mark on the wall.

1 January 2017 Commanders Corner From the desk of the Commander Hardin Post 113 What a fast and successful 2016 for the Legion! Sometimes I have to ask myself, where did the year go? It s my hope everyone has a safe and healthy new year. December was a very busy month for everyone. We all stayed busy with parties, volunteering, WWII / Korean Veteran Lunch and our New Year s Eve celebration with the Bar Nuns. All of this could not have happened without our management team, employee staff and all the volunteers who made the month memorable for all. January is starting off just as busy. January 5th is our General Membership meeting. Prior, during and after the meeting I look forward to interacting with everyone. Additionally, the Department of Kentucky American Legion Conference is on January 27-28, 2017, Crowne Plaza, Louisville. Please check the calendar and Facebook for fun events happening at the Post. As we prepare to have our 45th President sworn in, let us remember a quote from President John F. Kennedy Let us not seek the Republican answer or the Democratic answer, but the right answer. Let us not seek to fix the blame for the past. Let us accept our own responsibility for the future. John S. A new beginning with all those New Year s resolutions making promises to be better, exercise more, lose weight or quit smoking! Some of us will manage to keep our resolutions for at least a week or two but life will change the best of plans. As we all know, time marches on and we adjust with the flow continuing to live life as best we can with its challenges along the way. As members of the Legion family, let s continue our efforts to support veterans, their families and their community. We accomplished lots of amazing things in 2016 raising awareness of the American Legion, the American Legion Auxiliary, the Sons of the American Legion and the American Legion Riders while showing how dedicated we are to our veterans. Thank you to everyone who helped to make every event in December a wonderful success. The smiles on children s faces at Breakfast with Santa was so rewarding! I know lots of volunteers worked at many events decorating, cooking, serving, and doing whatever else was needed. Thank you for making it all happen in the spirit of service to others. American Legion Riders From the Saddle Bags of Hardin Post 113 ALR Director Hello Riders, January is a great month for the American Legion Riders! January signals the countdown to a new riding season, a new year to raise funds for our charities, and a new year to make the most of our common relationship as American patriots. In 2016 our Legion Riders chapter donated over $38, to local, regional, and national charities. Our involvement in the local community and surrounding counties is only made possible by our greatest resource; all of you. From the bottom of my heart I want to thank you all for your selfless service to each other, fellow veterans, and your American Legion. I'm looking forward to 2017 and all the great rides, fund-raisers, and camaraderie that only true American Patriots understand. YOUR FAITH Sometimes we're tempted to hide our faith.

Maybe we're not proud of this or that in our life. But you need to let people know you're a Christian so God gets the credit for how great you are.

Don't be ashamed of your faith; don't be afraid to help, to defend, or to say encouraging things to others.

Don't discredit your words and don't discredit what you have to give to a hurting world.

And we're all hurting in one way or the other. Be the kind of person that is always available to shine the light.

We don't want to let people know that we go to church or that we're a Christian because of some of things Christians do that we don't like. Maybe we're not proud of this or that in our life. But you need to let people know you're a Christian so God gets the credit for how great you are. And you are great. You have something good to give to people. Don't be ashamed of your faith; don't be afraid to help, to defend, or to say encouraging things to others. There are so many times where I said the smallest, littlest thing to somebody and I said it in passing and later found out that was a really big deal to them. Don't discredit your words and don't discredit what you have to give to a hurting world. Be aware of the needs of the people in the fifteen feet of space around you. They are there. Have listening ears and meet the needs of people who are hurting. And we're all hurting in one way or the other. Be the kind of person that is always available to shine the light. PRAYER: Dear Lord, teach me how to declare your name with honor and glory. I don't want to misuse your name. Help me to represent your name when showing love and dignifying others. REFLECTION: Do you ever hide that you're a Christian? Do you sometimes fear you'll be judged for what other Christians have done? Remember to be the light that people need, be the example of a Christian that loves like Jesus does. Please remember in prayer: Jane Gray, David Hayes, Darlene Probus, Ron Atkinson, Jeff Hall, Charlotte VanKirk, Jack Killion, Steve Curry, Our Country, Our Military and Families. We had elves, we had Mrs. Clause, why, we even had the Grinch from Whoville, and of course, we had Santa! Oh, the joyous smiles on the children s faces as they told Santa their Christmas wishes! The North Pole photographer captured these smiles which, in turn, brought big smiles to their parent s faces when they were presented with the picture of little Johnny or Susie. Everyone enjoyed the delicious breakfast prepared by Santa s talented chefs. Santa s handy helpers served the breakfast and coffee. Two of Santa s junior elves provided holiday music. Santa had other helpers and elves on hand to help the children with crafts. Christmas cards were made and we certainly can t forget the many baggies of reindeer food that were made to be sprinkled on the children s lawns so that Rudolph and the gang would be sure to know where to stop. Santa s two event planners would like to give a huge thanks to all the wonderful elves, cooks, servers, helpers, and of course, to Santa himself! We would also like to thank the following: Santa s American Legion helpers who made it possible to purchase gifts to fill the stockings; the Jolly Elf at Priceless Foods who gave us bright red apples and juicy oranges for the stockings; the wonderful elf from Operation Homefront who gave us gifts to put under the tree and McDonald s for their donation of coupons.
