The HIM Book Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book It is written of me,) to do thy will, O God. (Hebrews 10:7) It Is Written Daily Devotional Our Scripture text is first mentioned in Psalm 40:7-8: Then said I, Lo, I come: in the volume of the book it is written of me, I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart. Jesus is the epitome of what is written in the scroll, in the volume of the book. In fact, He is the Word personified. The Scripture says, In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God...And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us... (John 1:1, 14). He is in every book of the Bible; and the entire Bible is a revelation of Him. The name, Jesus, derived from the Hebrew name, Yeshua, means, God is salvation. Thus, the Scripture said and thou shalt call his name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins (Matthew 1:21). This redemptive theme runs throughout the Bible. The story of Abraham and Isaac was a shadow of what was to come. Therefore, Abraham said,...god will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering... (Genesis 22:8). Moreover, each piece of furniture in Moses tabernacle was a type or shadow of Jesus. He is the brightness of God s glory and the express image of His person (Hebrews 1:3). He is God incarnate, Emmanuel. The Bible is not a hymn book; it is a H-I-M book. It is all about Him - Jesus Christ! Apostle Nate Holcomb

Independence Day, also referred to as the Fourth of July or July Fourth, is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, The Continental Congress declared that the thirteen American colonies regarded themselves as a new nation, the United States of America, and were no longer part of the British Empire.[1] The Congress actually voted to declare independence two days earlier, on July 2.[1] Independence Day is commonly associated with fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, fairs, picnics, concerts, baseball games, family reunions, and political speeches and ceremonies, in addition to various other public and private events celebrating the history, government, and traditions of the United States. Independence Day is the National Day of the United States.[2][3][4] During the American Revolution, the legal separation of the Thirteen Colonies from Great Britain in 1776 actually occurred on July 2, when the Second Continental Congress voted to approve a resolution of independence that had been proposed in June by Richard Henry Lee of Virginia declaring the United States independent from Great Britain rule.[5][6] After voting for independence, Congress turned its attention to the Declaration of Independence, a statement explaining this decision, which had been prepared by a Committee of Five, with Thomas Jefferson as its principal author. Congress debated and revised the wording of the Declaration, finally approving it two days later on July 4. A day earlier, John Adams had written to his wife Abigail: The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.[7] Adams s prediction was off by two days. From the outset, Americans celebrated independence on July 4, the date shown on the much-publicized Declaration of Independence, rather than on July 2, the date the resolution of independence was approved in a closed session of Congress.[8] Wikipedia

Kalaya Hicks FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MEDIA CONTACT: Kalaya Hicks, Honor Student Kalaya Hicks Nominated for The Congress of Future Science and Technology Leaders in Boston, MA KILLEEN, TEXAS Kalaya Hicks, a Senior at C.E. Ellison of Killeen Texas Nominated for the Congress of Future Science and Technology Leaders in Lowell, MA on June 29th - July 1st, The Congress is an honors-only program for high school students who are passionate about science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM). The purpose of this event is to honor, inspire, motivate and direct the top students in the country who aspire to be scientists and technologists, to stay true to their dream and, after the event, to provide a path, plan and resources to help them reach their goal. Kalaya Hicks was nominated by Dr. John C. Mather, winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics and Science Director of the National Academy of Future Scientists and Technologists to represent C.E. Ellison High School, Killeen Texas based on her academic achievement, leadership potential and passion for science and technology. During the three-day Congress, Kalaya Hicks will join students from across the country and hear Nobel Laureates and National Medal of Science recipients talk about leading scientific research; be given advice from deans of the world's top tech universities; be inspired by fellow teen science prodigies; and learn about cutting-edge advances and the future of science and technology. "This is a crucial time in America when we need more nimble-minded and creative scientists and technologists who are even better prepared for a future that is changing exponentially, said Richard Rossi, Executive Director, National Academy of Future Scientists and Technologists. Focused, bright and determined students like Kalaya Hicks are our future and she deserves all the mentoring and guidance we can give her. The Academy offers free services and programs to students who have the desire to learn more about their future in science or technology. 14 Major League Jaylen Smith Every baseball player dreams of sitting in a room with their family and getting a call bringing them one step closer to the Big Show. For Copperas Cove graduate Jaylen Smith, that call came on Wednesday afternoon, when he was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 29th round of the 2018 MLB Draft. It s amazing, he said. I can t explain it hearing you re going to be playing the sport you love and trying to play for the rest of your life. 29th Round of the MLB Draft Although Smith verbally committed to play for San Jacinto Community College last July, at the start of the season, he sat down and talked out his options and potential to be drafted with Bulldawgs head coach Dusty Brittain. I actually heard it from Jaylen himself, Brittain said. When he answered the phone, Smith told him, Coach, it just happened. After years playing under Brittain, Smith said he was comfortable going to his coach for guidance about deciding whether to continue on the college route or try to make it to the MLB. As a coach, Brittain hears many of his players talk of playing in the big leagues one day, but this is the first athlete he coached to be drafted. It s awesome, he said. It s a testament to the kid and the hard work and talent. For Smith, it s a dream come true. I ve always dreamed of being drafted, but to come out of Cove, he explained, and to be Coach Brittain s first, that s something I ll never forget. Smith was a multisport athlete, who also played quarterback for the Bulldawgs, and waited out his senior season to see if any football offers would come his way. At the beginning of the season, long before Copperas Cove s playoff appearance, Smith started getting calls that he was being looked at for the draft, and he knew his path. Most my family has been around football, but they know me growing up being in both, he said, but my calling is baseball. Since the news broke, Smith s twitter has blown up. I m a life-long Jaylen Smith fan, Brittain said. Wherever he goes, I ll be a fan. As this new chapter in his career begins, Smith is ready for everything that comes with this opportunity. A lot of fun, a lot of competition, Smith said. Hopefully, I can get better and move up as fast as I can to get to the big leagues. Stay hungry, Brittain advises. It s not going to be easy. He s going from being a high school stud to now being at the bottom of the pecking order. Work hard, and good things are going to happen. At Bulldawgs games, Smith s mother posts K signs against the pressbox. It s a tradition she started before the season as she enjoys keeping track of all his stats. Smith knows his mom will continue to keep track of his stats at every game she can catch. She s not ready to give it up, Smith said of the tradition. As for those local players who dream of playing in the big leagues, Smith advises them it is possible. I tell kids all the time to work hard he said. If you ever dream something big, go after it. Don t ever think you can t reach it. If you can put your mind to it, you can do it. fcardenas@kdhnews.com

July 2018 Issue 07 Wellness Corner Be Safe in the Sun Sunlight is the main source of UV radiation, even though UV rays make up only a small portion of the sun s rays. About 95% of the UV rays from the sun that reach the earth are UVA rays, with the remaining 5% being UVB rays. The strength of the UV rays reaching the ground depends on a number of factors, such as: Time of day: UV rays are strongest between 10 am and 4 pm. Season of the year: UV rays are stronger during spring and summer months. This is less of a factor near the equator. Distance from the equator (latitude): UV exposure goes down as you get farther from the equator. In this Wellness Corner you can learn about some of the damaging effects that too much ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure can have on the skin. You ll also find tips to help you protect yourself and your family from getting too much sun. Radiation is the emission (sending out) of energy from any source. There are many types of radiation. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is a form of electromagnetic radiation. The main source of UV radiation (rays) is the sun, although it can also come from man-made sources such as tanning beds and welding torches. Radiation exists across a spectrum from very high-energy (high-frequency) radiation like x-rays and gamma rays to very low-energy (low-frequency) radiation like radio waves. UV rays have more energy than visible light, but not as much as x-rays. Higher energy UV rays often have enough energy to remove an electron from (ionize) an atom or molecule, making them a form of ionizing radiation. Ionizing radiation can damage DNA in the cells in our body, which in turn may lead to cancer. But because UV rays don t have enough energy to penetrate deeply into the body, their main effect is on the skin. Disclaimer: This information is not intended to replace the advice of a doctor. Please do not disregard professional medical advice, or delay in seeking it, because of the information in this Wellness Corner. Altitude: More UV rays reach the ground at higher elevations. Clouds: The effect of clouds can vary. Sometimes cloud cover blocks some UV from the sun and lowers UV exposure, while some types of clouds can reflect UV and can increase UV exposure. What s important to know is that UV rays can get through, even on a cloudy day. Reflection off surfaces: UV rays can bounce off surfaces like water, sand, snow, pavement, or grass, leading to an increase in UV exposure. Contents of the air: Ozone in the upper atmosphere, for example, filters out some UV radiation. The amount of UV exposure a person gets depends on the strength of the rays, the length of time the skin is exposed, and whether the skin is protected with clothing or sunscreen.

Man-made sources of UV rays Man-made sources of UV rays can also be important. These include: Sunlamps and sunbeds (tanning beds and booths): The amount and type of UV radiation someone is exposed to from a tanning bed (or booth) depends on the specific lamps used in the bed, how long a person stays in the bed, and how many times the person uses it. Most modern UV tanning beds emit mostly UVA rays, with the rest being UVB. Phototherapy (UV therapy): Some skin problems (such as psoriasis) are helped by treatment with UV light. For a treatment known as PUVA, a drug called a psoralen is given first. The drug collects in the skin and makes it more sensitive to UV. Then the patient is treated with UVA radiation. Another treatment option is the use of UVB alone (without a drug). Black-light lamps: These lamps use bulbs that give off UV rays (mostly UVA). The bulb also gives off some visible light, but it has a filter that blocks most of that out while letting the UV rays through. These bulbs have a purple glow and are used to view fluorescent material. Bug-zapping insect traps also use black light that gives off some UV rays, but the bulbs use a different filter that causes them to glow blue. Mercury-vapor lamps: Mercury-vapor lamps can be used to light large public areas such as streets or gyms. They do not expose people to UV rays if they are working properly. They are actually made up of 2 bulbs: an inner bulb that emits light and UV rays, and an outer bulb that filters out the UV. UV exposure can only occur if the outer bulb is broken. Some mercury-vapor lamps are designed to turn themselves off when the outer bulb breaks. The ones that don t have this feature are only supposed to be installed behind a protective layer or in areas where people wouldn t be exposed if part of the bulb breaks. High-pressure xenon and xenon-mercury arc lamps, plasma torches, and welding arcs: Xenon and xenon-mercury arc lamps are used as sources of light and UV rays for many things, such as UV curing (of inks, coatings, etc.), video projection, fiber optics, disinfection, to simulate sunlight (to test solar panels, for example), and even in some car headlights. Most of these, along with plasma torches and welding arcs, are mainly of concern in terms of workplace UV exposure. Does UV radiation cause cancer? Yes. In fact, most skin cancers are a direct result of exposure to the UV rays in sunlight. Both basal cell and squamous cell cancers (the most common types of skin cancer) tend to be found on sun-exposed parts of the body, and their occurrence is typically related to lifetime sun exposure. The risk of melanoma, a more serious but less common type of skin cancer, is also related to sun exposure, although perhaps not as strongly. Skin cancer has also been linked to exposure to some artificial sources of UV rays. Can I avoid exposure to UV radiation? UV rays in sunlight It s not possible (or healthy) to avoid sunlight completely, but there are ways to help ensure you re not getting too much sun. If you are going to be outside, simply staying in the shade, especially during midday hours, is one of the best ways to limit your UV exposure from sunlight. Protect your skin with clothing and wear a hat to protect your head, face, and neck. Wear sunglasses that block UV to protect your eyes and the skin around them. Use sunscreen to help protect skin that isn t covered with clothing. For more information, see Skin Cancer Prevention and Early Detection. Source: cancer.org
