All Saints Lutheran Church 630 S. Quentin Road Palatine, IL The Newsletter of All Saints Lutheran Church of Palatine September 2017 Music Notes CANTATA CHOIR Sing with the Cantata Choir Rehearsals begin on Thursday, September 28, at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, October 1, at 9:45 a.m. This year we will present Let the Whole World Sing, by Joel Raney. Christmas is celebrated across the globe by people as diverse as the cultures in which they live. The hope for peace on earth is shared by millions of people in every corner of the globe. This is the inspiration behind Let the Whole World Sing. Including Celtic, Caribbean, African and Middle Eastern motives, new music is blended with familiar carols in a wide variety of styles to create an interesting and fresh re-telling of the Christmas Story. Youth and adult singers are invited to join the choir. Come to either rehearsal or both each week to prepare to sing this year s cantata. For more information about the music ministry of All Saints Lutheran Church, please contact Director of Music, Doug Williams at music@allsaintspalatine.org or , ext. 25. CHOIR REHEARSALS RESUME SEPTEMBER 6 th and 7 th Come sing and ring your praise to the Lord! All of the choirs begin rehearsing again the second week of September, preparing beautiful music for our worship services here at All Saints. Please come and join us in making a joyful noise together with others who love to sing, ring, and play instruments. If you are not able to participate, please encourage someone else to do so. At the very least, please offer a prayer of thanks for all who offer their gifts of music to our congregation. Rehearsals are as follows: Alleluia Choir Kindergarten to 5 th Grade Wednesdays 4:15 5:00 Adult Bells High school youth and adults Thursdays 6:15 7:30 Adult Choir High school youth and adults Thursdays 7:30 9:00 Children of the congregation are especially invited and encouraged to sing in the Alleluia Choir. At each rehearsal we do a variety of musical activities: learning songs, hymns, and anthems to sing in worship, playing hand chimes and other instruments, and having a great time making our own joyful noise. Let Doug Williams, Director of Music, know of your interest in participating so that music can be prepared and a seat reserved for you! Sunday, September 10 we change our worship schedule to Sunday morning at 8:30 and 11 with Education Hour for all ages at 9:45. For our Rally Day startup and all Sundays following, our Sunday School (age 3 through grade 5) and Confirmation (grades 6-8) begin in the sanctuary and then split into age-appropriate groups. High School meets in the Youth Room downstairs and Adult Forum (though no class Sep 10) will meet in the Library. Many great things happen during Education Hour. You don t want to miss it!

For All to Know Christ September Golf Outing Update The All Saints 24th Annual Golf Outing was held at the Lake Zurich Golf Club on August 3 rd (rain date). Twenty-Two (22) golfers braved severe weather to just barely sneak in 18 holes of golf between thunderstorms for this year s event. This year s event was also a fundraiser sponsored with a $250 grant from Thrivent. The outing raised $465 towards the Bethel Food Pantry food drive. The proceeds were raised through the sale of Mulligans, silent auctions, and straight donations by the golfers. Golfers returned to church following golf and enjoyed a delicious BBQ awards banquet. Awards and prizes were presented afterwards. Awards were presented to: Don Oppermann closest to the pin; D.J. Meehan closest to the line; Doug Main longest putt. The team of Ken Dau, Andrew Geigler, Ryan Dau and Bill Friskics tied the team of Paul DeClerk, Doug Main and Rick Miller for low total with net scores of 68. Many thanks go out to everyone that helped pull this event together this year including Debbie Dau (accounting, photographs and cart girl along with Joan Fedota); Banquet coordinators Carol MacCabe, Mary Kosko, Sam Krause and Paul DeClerk our Griller in chief. Special thanks to many individuals who helped secure prizes; especially to Carol MacCabe and Jerry Williams for helping secure several of the prizes enjoyed by the participants. Thanks to Ashley and Nick Richardson for their donating golf balls and tees to this year s event. And thanks finally to our prize donors including the Red Apple Pancake House, Stan s Barbershop, CNS Automotive, Applied Chiropractic Arts, Heartland Bank, Cave 14, Bread and Butter, D Benedetto s, Durty Nellies, Highland Woods Golf Course, the Tap House Grill, Photo s Hot Dogs, Portilllos, the Chicago Bears, d Vine Wine and Gifts, and Elements Theraputic Massage. We hope to see you next year. Read On Chapter One, All Saints' book discussion group, begins another year with great conversation and fellowship Monday September 18, 7 pm, at Joan Fedota's home. We will discuss "A Gentleman in Moscow" by Amor Towles and vote on books to read in the coming year. Call or Jane Oppermann (js.oppermann@comcast.net, ) or Nancy Doyle, (ncdoyle414@aol.com, ) for more information. Bethel Food Pantry Food Drive As of August 20th we re at 1,808 units (90%), just shy of our 2,000 unit goal. All we need is another 192 units.

For All to Know Christ September Preparations for new PADS season underway Next month All Saints will again open its doors to shelter homeless men, women and children every Saturday night during the cold-weather months. And preparations are underway to assure that we can care for them beginning Oct. 7. Volunteers are the backbone of the shelter. Just to open our doors each week we need at least 20 volunteers, said Tom Germuska, one of the shelter s co-directors. Each weekend our volunteers host the guests from their arrival at 7 p.m. Saturday evening until they leave at 7 a.m. Sunday morning; others will clean up so that the rooms utilized for the shelter can be used for Confirmation classes and the Youth Group. In addition, we need food donors who will either cook or shop for the food needed to feed our guests a nutritious dinner and breakfast and provide a brown bag lunch as they leave. Adults and high school juniors and seniors who would like to become shelter volunteers must first attend a new-volunteer orientation conducted by Journeys The Road Home. The Book for traditional volunteer sign-ups and food donations will be available in the narthex in September. In addition to signing up volunteers to work in the shelter there is a need for a few people willing to do a bit more as members of the leadership team. To keep the shelter running smoothly we need: Site Managers who will oversee the shelters operations one weekend each month. These individuals should have prior experience as a shelter volunteer. A laundry/clothes-closet coordinator. This person will provide guidance and direction for the volunteers who do our laundry each week and manage the clothing donations we receive. Kitchen Managers. These individuals oversee the feeding of our guests one Saturday each month. Prior experience as a shelter volunteer is helpful but not required. Volunteer Coordinators. These team members will make a handful of calls each week to confirm the volunteers who have signed up for a shift and occasionally recruit substitute volunteers. For more information about these opportunities and how you can participate in All Saints ministry to homeless persons in our community contact either of the Site Directors, Monika Fiedler or Tom Germuska. BLOOD DRIVE SUNDAY September 24, :30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. All Saints Lutheran Church and LifeSource will be having a blood drive on Sunday, September 24th from 7:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the gathering space. Anyone in good health, at least 18 years of age (16 and 17 with parental consent) and weighs at least 110 pounds is a potential donor. There is no upper age limit. A person can donate whole blood every 56 days (8 weeks). Most whole blood donations are separated into red blood cells, platelets and plasma possibly helping to save three lives. Most of us will require a blood transfusion sometime in our lifetime. Prepare for your donation. Eat well, stay hydrated and remember to bring an ID. To schedule your appointment please contact: LifeSource , register online at using sponsor code PA03, or see Roger Nelson or call him at Appointments are recommended and walk-ins are welcome! Be a PADS Volunteer

For All to Know Christ September Beer and Hymns To celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, we are teaming up with Atonement Lutheran and Our Saviour's Lutheran to offer "Beer and Hymns" time at Durty Nellie's in Palatine. Sunday, September 24 from 6-8 pm, come and sing traditional hymns in a non-traditional space (the band room at Durty Nellie's). Full bar and restaurant menu are available and a free-will offering for World Hunger will be taken. World Community Day Do you enjoy hospitality? Our congregation has the opportunity to host World Community Day sponsored by Church Women United for our greater suburban area on Friday, November 3. I am asking for a few members to share some desserts or finger food for the fellowship time following the Celebration service. Also help is needed for set up and cleanup the day of the celebration. I appreciate your willingness to help. Please contact me, Tracy Williams at or tracywilliams87@gmail.com. Thank you, in advance, for your consideration. Summer Supper September 13 at 6:30 pm All Saints participation in the summer-long ecumenical program to feed the hungry in the Northwest suburbs, continues Wednesday, September 13. The once-a-month Summer Suppers are an ideal opportunity for families with teens and tweens to volunteer together; Confirmation students can use Summer Suppers to accumulate service hours. Holden Evening Prayer worship is at 7:30 p.m. on the same night as Summer Supper and members of the congregation are welcome to be part of the community and come for supper before worship. Supper is served starting at 6:30 p.m. and the doors close at 8 p.m. All are welcome! Habitat for Humanity Happening on October 7 For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. (Jeremiah 29:11) Did you know that All Saints is part of the Spring of Life partnership, which includes 7 local churches, in support of Habitat for Humanity? As you may know, Habitat contributes building materials and volunteer labor and lunches-- for families who otherwise could not afford a home. We refer to this as a hand up, not a hand out, as families are required to assist with labor and qualify for interest free loans. We are grateful for our members who are among the most reliable, and knowledgeable volunteers on home builds in Northern Fox Valley. As we begin our 15th build this one in Des Plaines--we invite you to participate in an important fundraiser at Harper College s Performing Arts Center on Saturday, October 7, featuring live entertainment (Felix & Fingers Dueling Piano s with our own T. Duncan Parker!), raffles, and a silent auction. Please visit the website to learn more about this exciting event and to purchase tickets. If you would like to make a donation, provide items for the raffle or silent auction, or to find out how to volunteer on our next home build, please contact Lee or Dick Kingdon (lee7728@gmail.com).

Talk with either of the pastors and we ll get you hooked up. Deadline Articles for the June issue of Saint s Alive! should be submitted on or before September 25 h.
