Autumn Is a Time of Change T he month of September brings about a variety of changes for most of us. Changes in the weather or our weekly schedules are expected this time of year. We can prepare and make the necessary adjustments as needed. Some changes are not as routine and take a longer period of adjustment for us to feel comfortable. Anxiety can be brought on by unexpected changes. When this happens, it helps to remember that God has a plan, and although we cannot control the changes around us, we can control our reactions. We can find time for prayer and trust that the Holy Spirit will guide us through whatever we are facing. Managing changes in our lives is not always easy, but it is not always difficult either. Sometimes just altering your perception of change like viewing change as an opportunity, rather than a stumbling block can make all the difference in the world. For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the LORD, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope. Jeremiah 29:11 As we move into the month of September at Trinity, our worship schedule changes, many programs and classes resume for the school year, and we will be seeing changes in our church staff. All of these changes will bring about an increase in opportunities to share the love, peace, and grace that God has for all of us. What a blessing! Call for Lead Pastor is Accepted Pastor Bryan Robertson has accepted the call as Trinity s next lead pastor. Information from our church council president is on page 4. 2 Witnessing a Spiritual Awakening Pastor Jennifer DeNetz The church office will be closed on Labor Day, Monday, September 7. W e will begin our Sunday morning adult education, held from 9:00-10:15 a.m., with the study, Embracing Spiritual Awakening. In this study, Embracing Spiritual Awakening, Diana Butler-Bass helps us to understand the relationship between our changing culture and the church. Thirty five percent of young adults under thirty claim to be unaffiliated with any religion or faith tradition. Many people claim to be spiritual but not religious; meaning they do not participate in the tradition of any organized religion. What does that mean for the future of the Christian Church and how do we need to address this trend? In her study, Diane looks at three central questions to our faith: What do we believe? (theology) How do we do that? (rules) Who are we? (membership) These are the conventional religious questions of believing, behaving, and belonging. What if we also add a spiritual dimension to each of these questions: How do we believe that? (experience and reason) What should we do now? (discernment and purpose) Whose are we? (relationship and community). In this study we will explore these questions and what they mean for witnessing to our Christian faith in the 21 st century. Fearless Generosity What does generosity look like to you? In October, our stewardship emphasis will be to look at what it means to be generous and how God calls us to this through the scriptures. We would also like you to send us photos of where you see generous giving here at Trinity. You can submit your photos via to solsen@tlcwauapca.org or share them on our Facebook page. Paul writes in Ephesians 3:20-21 I pray that Christ Jesus and the church will forever bring praise to God. God s power at work in us can do far more than we dare ask or imagine. Diane tells an interesting story of witnessing. She was on a plane and the man sitting next to her kept asking what she did. Finally she revealed that she was an author of books on religion and spirituality. He told her he was an atheist and never had a good experience with a Christian. So Diane said he could tell her why she should become an atheist. Two hours into his monologue he said to her, I have never had a Christian listen to me, so what kind of Christian are you? It was through her listening that Diane opened a way for a conversation about faith to take place. Perhaps we don t need to worry so much about what we are going to say, but how we can listen and build credibility so we can share our story with those who do not share our faith in Jesus Christ. Worship on Wednesday (WOW) services begin on Wednesday, September 6:15 p.m. The Praise Team, including members of Shepherd s Quarter, will resume rehearsals on Wednesday afternoons at 5:00 p.m. in the sanctuary. Middle and high school-aged youth are encouraged to join us in leading music for WOW. Please contact Wanda, , if you would like to get involved with this contemporary-style service.

From the President I accept the call extended to me by Trinity Lutheran Church. Throughout the interview process and following your congregational vote, I have thought and prayed about serving in this call and I have no reservations about accepting it. Words from Pastor Bryan Robertson, in his acceptance letter to the East Central Wisconsin Synod. Pastor Bryan Robertson has accepted the call to Trinity Lutheran as lead pastor. This is a very exciting time in our church and we look forward to working with Pastor Bryan as he transitions to his new role with Trinity Lutheran and Waupaca. The exact starting date has yet to be determined. We assure the congregation that we will assist in this process to make the transition happen in a timely fashion. We thank the congregation for your patience, suggestions, prayers, and support throughout this process. Special thanks to the Call Committee members and Trinity pastors and staff for their dedication, faithfulness, and hard work. I look forward to working with you and your committee regarding the next steps involved in this process. Thank you and please thank them for their service. Words from Pastor Bryan to the Trinity Call Committee. Please continue to pray over this transition. Please be faithful in this new chapter for Trinity Lutheran. Please look forward, as I do, to welcoming Pastor Bryan as our lead pastor. Steve Johnson, Church Council President Youth Room Improvements Trinity s Youth Room received a facelift this summer, thanks to the direction of summer youth intern McKenna Meza and a handful of youth who helped her paint the room. The new colors add a fresh look to the space, and one wall was repainted with chalkboard paint. The Youth Room is used weekly by an increasing number of students who meet for weekly Bible study and other gatherings.

A Timeless Teacher Joins Us for a Time O ne of the most terrific teachers from my youth is about to become a terrific teacher for our youth. Just as I m thrilled that Pastor Bryan Robertson will soon be Trinity s new lead pastor, I m also thrilled to introduce Mr. Terry Martin as Trinity s initial, interim youth program coordinator for the coming months. For some, he needs no introduction. Terry grew up here at Trinity. Of his multiple family connections here, you might know him best as a brother to Sue Martin, who recently moved Terry Martin Interim Youth Program Coordinator to Nebraska. I knew Terry long before I came to Trinity five years ago. He taught my freshman social studies class at Bay Port High School in Green Bay s northwest suburbs, where he is nothing shy of a legend as a teacher, coach, theater director, community member, and faithful Christian. Ranking among the most personable and caring teachers I ve ever had, Terry recently retired after 44 years of teaching. Thanks to one of my good friends and fellow classmates who heard Terry say that his post-retirement life would ideally include youthministry work, Terry became aware of our search for a youth program coordinator and kindly offered to step in for an interim period. (God was also surely involved in this coincidence my friend had no idea that Terry grew up at Trinity when she saw my Facebook announcement of the job opening.) Terry jumped into action within 24 hours of sitting down with us to consider the position. Just hours after agreeing to join us, Terry happened to be having dinner with his family at Clear Water Harbor on the last night of Chapel on the Lakes, led by Trinity s youth, and, without any prompting, he proceeded to find our young participants and started to get to know them. It was a moment that made clear to me that, for as long as we are blessed to have Terry with us, we will be deeply blessed. Terry continues to live in the Green Bay area, so he s commuting. He ll be around mostly on Wednesdays and Thursdays and work from home Pastor Andy Behrendt other days while joining us for other special events. As the search for a long-term youth program coordinator continues (with the deadline for applicants extended to Sept. 25), Terry will be a prominent face here on Wednesday nights: He ll teach the seventh-grade confirmation class until Pastor Bryan arrives, and he ll lead the Crossover Bible study for high-schoolers while also coordinating skits for Wednesday worship. He ll also serve as the first speaker in our series of presentations for confirmation students on Oct. 7. Please join me in saying hello to Terry (or, as he ll always seem more properly named in my mind, Mr. Martin ). Chances are, though, that he ll say hello to you first!

Trinity s Book Club Trinity s Book Club selection for September is also the Waupaca Community read: The Giver by Lois Lawry. Given his lifetime assignment at the Ceremony of Twelve, Jonas becomes the receiver of memories shared by only one other in his community and discovers the terrible truth about the society in which he lives. Discussion will be held on Thursday, September 10, beginning at 7:00 p.m., in the Conference Room at Trinity. If you are interested in being a part of Trinity s Book Club, please contact Jean Schwirtz at or jschwirtz@tlcwaupaca.org. Part-time Opening Available Trinity is still seeking a long-term Youth Program Coordinator. Working 25 to 30 hours per week and beginning sometime before the end of 2015, the person filling this role will succeed Interim Youth Program Coordinator Terry Martin in planning and leading youth events, serving as a mentor to students in middle and high school, and coordinating ongoing ministries including confirmation and high school Bible studies. The complete job description for the youth program coordinator is available in the church office and online at click Resources then Forms. Applicants should submit resumés to the church office, by mail, or via to applications@tlcwaupaca.org, by Friday, September 25. Please call the church office at (715) with any questions. Fall Bible Study for Women Abraham, Isaac and Jacob we have heard about them since we were in Sunday school. Abraham is the father of the three major world religions Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. He and Sarah had a son late in life. He had enough faith that he was willing to sacrifice his only son to God, but God intervened and his son, Isaac, lived to have two twin boys, Jacob and Esau. Jacob had 12 sons the 12 tribes of Israel with wives Rachel and Leah (remember reading The Red Tent? ). This is our Christian genealogy. So how well do we know Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob? And how do they connect with Jesus? This Bible study will educate us on this, as well as show us how it relates to the political conflicts today. Beth Moore is a nationally recognized women s Bible study leader. We will be using her videos and workbook to discuss our learnings as a group. Her humor and depth of knowledge make this study unforgettable. If you want to learn more about God and about your relationship with Christ, please join us. This study group will meet on Monday nights beginning September 21, 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Trinity. Please contact Sue Heideman-Clough at , by September 14, to sign up. The cost of the book is $20. Room Use at Trinity Remember to check with the church office staff, to schedule a room for your group or event in our building.

Something for Everyone Many of Trinity s groups and studies begin meeting again in the fall. Make sure you pick up a Groups and Ministries booklet in the Koinonia Room or the church office, to find a group or Bible study that interests you. There is a wide variety of ways to be involved at Trinity, and new participants are welcomed. Looking for a fun way to get involved at Trinity? Join the Library Ministry. The only prerequisite is a love of books! The Library Committee meets once a month to work in the library straightening and organizing, processing books, and selecting new books and DVDs to order. Interested? Simply attend the next meeting on Wednesday, September 23, at 9:00 a.m. in the church library. South African Partnership Update TRIPS: Terry Nellis will be headed to Saron Parish to celebrate their partnership program. (Sept. 19 Oct. 1) Please keep Terry in your prayers during his travels. We are also preparing to receive guests from our South Africa partners in late June and early July of Watch for upcoming details. TERMS: One difference to note about our partnership with Saron Parish in Phokeng, South Africa, is the terminology. Our synod is their diocese. Our conference is their circuit. Our church is their parish, and a parish is comprised of many churches. Please keep these differences in mind when you read further updates. DONATIONS: Thank you for all the donations of aluminum cans. We have crushed over 400 pounds so far! This collection will continue into the fall. Place your cans in the trailer near the dumpster in the church parking lot. Also, thanks so much for the donations for the orphanage. Terry will be taking these to South Africa on his trip later this month. Your monetary donations will also be accepted to support this partnership. You can write SA Partnership in the memo of your check or type it as the designation next to Special Projects if you give online. Thank you! New Address or Cell Number? Update your membership information easily through our website. Go to and click on the Member Information Update button on the left-hand side of the home page. Thank you! NOTES FROM THE Treasurer Thank you! A BIG thank you to all Thrivent members who have designated Trinity as a recipient of Choice Dollars. Trinity has received $52,740 since the Thrivent Choice program began five years ago. These dollars have been used to help reduce our building mortgage. If you are a Thrivent member and would like more information on this program, you can call them or visit their website at thrivent-choice/ End of July Numbers The balance of our Building Loan was $2,032,838. The balance of our General Account was -$15,042. Nancy Johnson Treasurer

Sunday School News Jean Schwirtz Sunday School Coordinator Bible Presentations at Worship Our new Beginners 3 students will receive their SPARK Story Bibles on Rally Sunday, September 13, at the 10:30 a.m. worship service. Students entering 3 rd grade will also receive a new SPARK Bible. Bibles will be presented at worship services on Saturday, September 19, Sunday, September 20, and the WOW service on Wednesday, September 23. The Bibles are purchased with funds from Trinity s Annual Pancake Supper. Education Staff Installation Installation of Trinity education staff will be held on Wednesday, September 23 at the WOW service, 6:15 p.m., and Sunday morning, September 27, at the 8:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. worship services. Let the Children Come to Church I t s that time of the year again: The start of Sunday school (on September 13) and confirmation (on September 16) will mean the widespread return of kids and teens and the excitement that always comes with them to Trinity s hallways and classrooms. I, for one, couldn t be any happier about that. I hope and pray that there will also be plenty of these young folks in worship throughout the coming year and not just on Rally Week, and not only at Worship on Wednesday services. Some of it might be for selfish reasons since I m looking forward to having other kids make noise during church besides my own two little boys. But, seriously, when we lack children in our midst, we aren t the full image of God and the entire body of Christ. We need their energy and, dare I say it, their joyful noise. I now know all too well what a challenge it can be as a parent to worship with your kids, but the future of both our children and our church depends on it. By Pastor Andy Behrendt Young families, please join us at 9:15 on Rally Sunday morning for the kickoff to the Sunday school year to hear more about this. And please make it a point to attend worship in the weeks that follow, as the worship weeks of September and September will include a special focus on just how much children mean to Jesus, who said, Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me (Mark 9:37), and Let the little children come to me for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs (Mark 10:14).
