She died on September 5, 1997 and most people knew she was destined to be declared a saint. The usual 5 year waiting period for investigation of sainthood on someone was waved for her and in this year of mercy we will have a new saint who showed great mercy! She helped the poorest of the poor to die with dignity and commented that she saw Christ in those she helped in a distressing disguise. Mother Teresa was living the Spiritual and Corporal works of mercy everyday of her ministry. And many people that met her commented that there seemed to be an aura of holiness around her. I remember the year that she died was also the year that princess Diana died in a car accident. The media coverage of Mother Teresa s death was nothing compared to the press that princess Diana received. It seemed to me that the media focused on a woman with great physical beauty and tossed aside the woman with great spiritual beauty. Even though Mother Teresa was Catholic and the major religion of India was Hindu, they came to love her because of all the work the Missionaries of Charity (the religious group she founded) did for the people of India. Mother Teresa was even honored with a state funeral by the government of India. Charity (love) is a universal language that the whole world understands. I believe that one of the most compelling reasons that Mother Teresa should be declared a saint is because of the discovery of certain letters that she wrote that showed for almost her entire ministry with the poor (almost 50 years), she struggled to feel the presence of God. Can you even imagine doing such hard work day after day for that long and not feeling the presence of God?! But Mother Teresa knew that God loved her and knew that God deserved her obedience. She was a true saint by not letting the lack of consolation keep her from doing the work that she knew God wanted her to do. There is a movie about Mother Teresa that has recently come out on DVD. It is called The Letters. I wished it had spent more time on the letters she wrote, but it is still a good movie about her life and the obstacles she had to overcome. I recommend you watch it. There are so many great quotes from Mother Teresa, but I wanted to end this article with a quote that described her ministry: Let us touch the dying, the poor, the lonely and the unwanted. This patience, just like love, is a fruit of the Spirit, mature in trials, and generates perseverance and hope that it does not disappoint. Thus the Pauline hymn of love proclaims that love is patient and bears all things. 3 3 ST. JOSEPH SCHOOL HELP WANTED St. Joseph School is also in need of a SCRIP coordinator. This person cannot be an employee of the school or the parish. This involves placing orders, picking orders up at Mansfield Christian school weekly, making deposits & writing checks when orders are picked up. Please contact Amanda Shade at if you are interested. Sacred Heart Parish will be having a special Holy Hour on Wednesday, September 7th at 7 pm at Sacred Heart Parish. The theme will be Persecuted Christians. Please join your fellow parishioners for this special Holy Hour. A NEW YOUTH MINISTER IS NEEDED AT RESURRECTION PARISH, LEXINGTON. This position calls for working to develop programs and activities to supplement the Parish School of Religion Program for all parish youth in grades 7 through 12. For additional information or to express interest for yourself or someone you know, please contact Kim Legge at or call the parish office at On Saturday, September 10 at 4:00 pm, there will be a special Mass for the dedication of the Mother Teresa Shrine at the Sorrowful Mother Shrine south of Bellevue. Mass at 4 pm will be in the Outdoor Pieta Chapel. After Mass we will process to the Shrine & officially bless the statue & site. After the dedication light refreshments will be served in the Pilgrim Center Cafeteria. We will be privileged to have some members of the Missionaries of Charity present for the event. Mother Teresa is to be canonized a saint on September 4th in Rome. CATHOLIC WOMENS CLUB: The next luncheon will be Wednesday, September 14, It will start as Mass at St. Peter s Church in Mansfield at 11:00 am. The luncheon will follow at Ontario Event Center at the Brown Derby at 12:30. All Catholic women in the St. Juan Diego Deanery are invited.
