The bright color is a reminder to us that this is Gaudete Sunday. Gaudete means to rejoice and we rejoice that Christmas is coming soon and very soon. Especially this year when Christmas joy comes not a few days after the fourth candle is lit, but only a few hours after the fourth candle is lit. I hope our hearts and minds will be ready. The third Sunday of Advent also marks the time when the O Antiphons are sung for Vespers (Evening Prayer for the Liturgy of the Hours). You hear some of the O antiphons at Mass from the hymn O Come, O Come, Emmanuel. This hymn is based on the O antiphons and these antiphons (like the rose candle) remind us to be joyful that Christmas is coming soon and very soon.
