1 The Grapevine February 2010 New Covenant United Methodist Church Please join us for our Ash Wednesday Service, February 17th at 7:00 p.m. Young at Heart Luncheon The Young at Heart will have a Valentine s Luncheon on Wednesday, February 10th, at 11:30 a.m. in the FLC. Please join them for good food and great fellowship. It was just yesterday we were celebrating Corner Christmas and now we are almost in the season of Lent. Lent is the preparation for Easter. It is a time to evaluate our motives why we act the way we act, think the way we think, and do the things we do. This season we are going to make a journey into the last week of Jesus beginning with Sunday and ending with Friday. Jesus dealt with life and death and what is important in following him. We will begin with Ash Wednesday, February 17, by acknowledging that we are full of sin and in placing the ashes on our foreheads we repent and humble ourselves before God. On Sunday, February 21, we will begin the Lenten journey with Jesus entering Jerusalem. On February 28, our District Superintendent, Lillie Jones, will be preaching. I hope you will make a special effort to be a part of that experience. On April 1, we are going to observe Jesus in the Passover. We will actually observe the Jewish Passover as it relates to our salvation. As a part of this experience, we will enjoy a fellowship meal. Because the tables for this have to be set up for this meal, it will require reservations. You will hear more about this in March. Following Easter, if the Lord leads, we will spend time on Sundays talking about the family. The topics will center around how to love better by listening to one another, forgive, how to fight well, passing a strong faith to our children, raising children that make good choices, and leaving a legacy for the next generation. I hope you will join us for worship because I believe the weeks ahead will be exciting. On the first Sunday in February, we will hold the second worship service in the fellowship hall at 11:00. As we seek to do God s will, let us focus on what will reach the next generation and what we will need to do to make that happen. In Christ s love, Wade Pastor s

If you have one that you are not using and would like to donate it to this very worthy cause, please see Miss Teresa. PS- We really need the kind that folds up for storage in a closet. The youth supper club continues to be a marvelous outreach to the young people of our immediate neighborhood. Each Wednesday we feed the bodies and souls of kids who really are in need of this touch from Jesus. Would you please support this ministry with a small donation? If you would rather give food than money, we always need institutional sized cans of fruit and veggies as well as frozen meat, chicken and biscuits. Anything you do will help a neighbor's child see the face of Jesus. Crafts & Vendor Holiday Shopping Extravaganza The UMW of New Covenant will host a Crafts & Vendor Holiday Shopping Extravaganza on Saturday, November 13, 2010, from 9:00 AM until 3:00 PM in the Family Life Center. This is an excellent opportunity for folks to showcase their fine merchandise by renting an 8X8 space with a table or tables & 2 chairs in our FLC for $40.00 per space. We will have 22 spaces for rent with 6 of those spaces having electrical outlets. A few vendors that we anticipate, are a Pampered Chef Consultant, Cookie Lee Jewelry Consultant and talented people to sell their wood products, homemade quilts, and so forth. New Covenant will advertise in numerous neighborhoods and local publications for our vendors and print other media, banners, signage and handle distribution of flyers and postal cards to support this event. Therefore, we request our vendors to provide a photo of their crafts or products with their application form to use in the advertising. We will also ask each vendor to donate an item in the medium price range or upward for our Silent Auction with the item being indicative of the merchandise they are selling. The UMW will provide breakfast items, lunch items, bake sale and snacks available for purchase at reasonable prices during the event All proceeds from the event (vendor table rentals, silent auctions and food sales) will be for our Building Fund. The Exhibitor (vendor) Agreement Application forms will be available in the narthex and church office. Mark your calendars now. If you know of someone that would be interested in this great event, please let us know. The UMW will also need the help of a lot of our friends and church family to make this successful, so be thinking about how you would like to participate and we will have a sign up sheet later on for volunteers. If you have some suggestions that we could benefit from, please come to our next UMW meeting and share your great ideas.

New brick campaign has started and will extend until Feb. 14 th. Bricks with three lines Ushers for February United Methodist Women February is UNITED METHODIST WOMENS MONTH. Our UMW will be taking on the roll of ushers and announcement speakers for the month. If you would like to be a part of this, please see Martha Coltharp. 5 CHILDREN S COUNCIL NEWS Vacation Bible School 2010! PRESCHOOL NEWS REGISTRATION PACKETS NOW AVAILABLE in the narthex and online at We will be ready for the school year. We plan to have classes for 2, 3 & 4 year olds. Our staff will be ready to share the love of Christ and the love of learning with your little ones! Please help spread the word to families with preschoolers! Coming soon: The Preschool will sponsor a yard sale in the spring we will be taking donations of your unwanted treasures! Stay tuned for more information. It s time to start planning for this year s VBS! Our VBS dates are Sunday, July 11 Friday July 16, and this year s theme is HERO HEADQUARTERS! 6 FEBRUARY SPECIAL MISSION OFFERING TO AID EARTHQUAKE VICTIMS IN HAITI UMCOR has requested our help in providing assistance to the earthquake victims in Haiti. This terrible event has devastated the entire country and they are in dire need of help to find and save the people who have been injured and displaced by the earthquake. Entire families have been destroyed and many are without homes or food and water. Money for supplies is always needed to help save lives and restore the country to livable conditions. In addition to the collection of our February 7th monthly offering for the Haiti victims, UMCOR suggests that we make Health Kits for the people. These kits in a gallon plastic bag contain: 1 hand towel (16 x 25 up to 17 x 27, no kitchen towels) 1 washcloth 1 comb (large and sturdy, not pocket sized) 1 nail file or fingernail clippers (no emery boards or toenail clippers) 1 bath-size bar of soap (3 oz. and up) 1 toothbrush (single brushes only in original wrapper, no child-sized brushes) 6 adhesive plastic strip sterile bandages Do not include anything else as it will have to be removed before shipping and will slow down the delivery. (NOTE: UMCOR Sager Brown is now purchasing toothpaste in bulk to be added to health kits before shipping to ensure that the product does not expire before it is sent. Please include $1 for each kit you send toward the purchase of toothpaste.) Dear New Covenant Church, My husband and I want to thank you all for your help and kindness to us. They say God helps you and believe me he has been holding us in his loving and protecting arms since November 5th when Tom had the first of two heart attacks. When the specialist got him in Salt Lake City, Utah, they said he had what thoracic surgeons call the widow maker. God put surgeons, nurses and many kind strangers to help him beat the odds. Thank you and your church for the help we need now so much as he recovers. Keep us in your prayers and thank you again so much with helping with our utilities. This will be an ongoing process for a while as we gather YOUR GREAT RECIPES! Please start checking your recipe books at home and provide us with some of your recipes. If you would like to help with the production of our new cookbook in any way, please contact Wanda Parker, who will be our Chairperson. UMW Morning Circle The UMW Morning Circle will meet on Thursday, February 11th, at 10:00 a.m., at the church. All ladies of the church are invited to attend. UMW Morning Circle Volunteer at Belmont Adult Day Care On the second Tuesday of every month, the UMW Morning Circle will volunteer at the Belmont Adult Day Care. They will be leaving the church at 9:30 a.m. to go to the day care center. If you have any questions or would like to volunteer, please see Carol Thomas or Lynda Sims. UMW Evening Circle The Evening Circle will meet on Thursday, February 11th, at 6:30 p.m. at the home of Karen Rhyne. Refreshments will be provided by Group 2 and Wanda Parker will lead our study in Chapter 10 of "Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World." Everyone is asked to bring a $5 gift card for our college students. All ladies of the church are invited.
