New Covenant United Methodist Church WHAT IS A PRAYER QUILT? Can you touch a prayer? Can you pull it close and feel its comfort? You can if it is a prayer quilt. Ask any of those at New Covenant who have received a Prayer Quilt. Ask members of New Covenant's Circle of Love Prayer Quilt Ministry who have made the quilts. There is power in prayer and it is truly felt in a Prayer Quilt. New Covenant's Circle of Love Prayers and Squares Quilt Ministry began in the fall-winter of 2007 and at the present time has presented 18 quilts, have #19 and #20 ready for presentation, and #21 being made. There is love and joy in working on the quilts but the joy only multiplies in realizing the comfort the quilt will give. The idea behind these quilts is simple, yet powerful. A heavy thread is used to take stitches through the quilt layers, and the ends are left free to be tied with a square knot. As each knot is tied, a silent prayer is offered for someone in special need - someone who has asked us to pray for them. The quilt is then given to that person. What makes each quilt so special is not the pattern, color or workmanship, but the fact that prayer is symbolically tied into each knot. These comforters are a statement of faith, and a testimony to our belief in God and the power of prayer. It is not the quilt, but the prayer lifted when the knot is tied. At New Covenant, the first prayer knots are tied by those who made the quilt and then the quilt is placed on the altar rail for anyone to tie a knot and lift a prayer. Through Prayers and Squares, thousands of quilts have been distributed, each a special gift of love. Quilts have been made for sick babies, for cancer and AIDS patients, for adults and children facing surgery or difficult family situations - for many reasons, but each for someone in special need of the healing power of prayer. Do you know someone you feel needs a Prayer Quilt? They do not have to be members of New Covenant - they can be family members or friends. Ask this person if they will accept a Prayer Quilt. Fill out an Application Form that can be found on the table in the Narthex and turn it in to the Circle of Love or leave it on the table with the forms. Whoever takes the request form must be aware of "The Three Commandments" - namely: has this person asked you to pray for them? Are they prepared to accept a prayer quilt, and specifically, how would they like you to pray for them? Who gets a prayer quilt? Any person in physical, emotional or spiritual crisis who feels like they can benefit from being "covered by prayer". The Circle of Love has also made Military Prayer Squares, a 7 1/2" to 8" square that easily folds into a business envelope for mailing. Here again, it is wise to have the permission of the recipient before preparing and mailing. The Circle of Love is presently meeting on the third Tuesday of each month, but in October, meetings will again be held on each Tuesday with the exception of the second Tuesday when the group visits the Belmont Abbey Sr. Adult Center for bingo and/or rocking and talking with the adults. Meetings are held at New Covenant following the Tuesday Morning Prayer Time - about 9:30 a.m. Come join the prayer group for a short devotional and prayer. Anyone interested in being of part of the Circle of Love is invited to become a part of this special ministry.

4 Important Dates/Activities Fellowship Meals Due to the Labor Day Holiday, the Car Show and Elections, we will not have Fellowship Meals for the months of September, October and November. We will resume fellowship meals on December 1st from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Handbell Choir Handbell Choir will not practice the week of September 1st. Due to the Administrative Council meeting on September 15th, Handbell practice will be on Wednesday, September 17th, at 6:30 p.m. UMM Breakfast The UMM Breakfast will be on Sunday, September 7th, at 7:00 a.m. Administrative Council Administrative Council will meet on Monday, September 15th, at 7:00 p.m. A Note from Our Communications Chairperson With the busy fall and holiday season soon around the corner, please be thinking about what you want to be published as "free" advertising of the event in the Religion Section. We use Mountain Island Monitor, News at Norman, Lincoln-Times News, Gaston Gazette and the Lincoln/Gaston Neighbors Sunday section of the Observer. Articles for the October issue of the Monitor must be in to them by the 12th of September, and so forth. They require them in by the 12th of the month prior to publish for the next month. With the News at Norman and Neighbors section of the Observer, we can usually get the information to them 2-3 weeks before publish date - no later than that. The Lincoln-Times News & Gaston Gazette articles need to be about 10 to 14 days prior to publishing. Please keep this in mind and let me know what you would like to be printed. However, I am a full time worker and I need a little time to get the information to these folks also, so please don't wait until the very last minute. If you need some flyers prepared and put out around the church, I can do those for you with some advance notice. Thanks and if you have any questions or concerns, please let me know. 6 GIDEONS TO RECEIVE SEPTEMBER MISSION OFFERING New Covenant will receive the monthly Special Mission Offering on Sunday, September 7 during the morning worship services. Here is our opportunity to support this very important ministry. One can open the nightstand drawer of any hotel room and find a Bible left by the Gideons. For nearly 100 years, the Gideons have practiced their Bible ministry by placing Bibles in hotel rooms. Gideons is the oldest Christian business and professional men's association in the United States. The idea for this ministry began in a hotel room in Boscobel, Wisconsin on September 14, Two traveling salesmen were asked to share a room above a saloon in a crowded hotel hosting a lumbermen's convention. Discovering that both men were Christians, they prayed and read the Bible together before settling down for the night. They talked about forming a Christian men's association, but parted ways the next morning without any definite plans. By chance the following May, the idea was rekindled and on July 1, 1899, three men, John N. Nicholson, Samuel E. Hill and William J. Knights, founded the Gideons. The name comes from the Old Testament book of Judges and refers to a man who was willing to do whatever God asked of him. As early as 1900, the organization considered putting Bibles at the front desk of the hotels its members stayed in, but it was not until 1908 that the association voted to place Bibles in all hotel rooms. Within 20 years of the first placement of a Gideon Bible in a hotel room, the association distributed one million Bibles. Today, the Gideons distribute more then 56 million Bibles and New Testaments every year- this averages out to one million books every seven days, or 107 per minute. Today, Bibles are given out to hotels and motels, but also to hospitals and doctors offices, jails and prisons, and elementary and high schools, colleges and universities and military bases. A 1997 survey of American travelers found that 23 percent of those surveyed read the Gideons Bible in their hotel rooms. When the Bibles are taken or become too worn, the local camp of the Gideons will replace them at no charge. When a new hotel opens, a representative of Gideons will present a Bible to the hotel's general manager in a solemn ceremony. Then Bibles for the entire property are given to the house keeping department which places one in each room. Some properties have begun offering other religious books in their hotel rooms such a the Book of Mormons or Buddhist religious texts. But, for the majority of travelers, the Gideon Bible is the book they find when they settle into their hotel rooms for the night. The Gideons Mission Field is world wide reaching into 175 countries and more than 140,000 thousand members. Sadly and hard to believe, the United States of America has become the third largest mission field in the world today. Estimates of unsaved people in the U.S.A. range from 54% to 70%. In response to this startling revelation, Gideons plan to distribute 12 million copies of God's word in the U.S.A. alone during fiscal year. Gideons is supported by many Evangelical churches of many denominations. Here is our opportunity to help in distribution of the Bibles and New Testaments to help tell of God's love and saving grace. Bless you in your giving.
