WHERE WAS MR. HARRILL? Delegates to 4-H Club Congress related this story: Saturday dawned early for delegates in Chicago for Club Congress. Time had come to return to the Tar Heel state. Everyone was rushing to get to the airport. As usual, Mr. Harrill was behind everyone, making sure each delegate had his luggage. With a little luck, the delegates reached the airport on time. But where was Mr. Harrill? Seems he had to return to the hotel. He forgot something --his luggage. (George Holtzman) 2 JOHNSTON VESPERS "Learn, Live And Serve Through 4-H In A Christian- Like Way was the theme of the Wednesday night vespers program, presented by Johnston County. Four-H'ers Annette Wall. Sidney Sauls and Rev. Albert Coats told how we could serve 4-H in a Christianlike way. Special music was given by Danny Coats, accompanied by Steve Barefoot. (Bob McLean)

3 RADIO COMMITTEE Five 4-H'ers, working with extension radio editor Bob Bryan, have been covering the events of Club Week for radio stations. The group has been making two live" broadcasts each day in addition to other spot announcements and tapes. They are, left to right: Jo Ann Corbin, Macon; Linda Sherron, Durham; Hamp Howey, Union; Bryan; Johnny Winborne, Chowan; and Barbara Patterson, New Hanover. PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES EXPRESS VIEWS ON ROLE OF PRESIDENT "What is the role of State 4 H Council president as you see it? This question was put to each of the three candidates for the presidency Wednesday. Here are their responses: Jane Bates: The State Council president should be a good citizen, have a pleasing personality and have the ability to preside over State Council meetings effi ciently. She should be of service in any way possible to 4-H Clubs throughout the state. She should constantly strive to live up to the 4 H motto and the pledge. Brenda Fairless: "The role of the State Council president is one that involves many important responsibilities as one is considered a "model 4-H'er. It must be entered whole-hartedly with initiative and an endless supply of energy and cooperation. It would involve the keeping of all 4 H'ers in North Carolina in step with the rapid pace in which our organization is progressing today. No longer would this leader be dealing with just her own club on a local level, but on a statewide basis to ignite in them a desire to be the very best. " Betty Scott: One of the responsibilities of our state president is to be a true representative of 168, H'ers in North Carolina. She must be a shining example of all that 4-H stands for and at all times be 4 H's goodwill ambassador to the people of the state. Other responsibilities include: presiding at meetings, encouraging and sparking enthusiasm in other 4-H members and working continually to expand our 4 H program so more and more youth in our state can be influenced by our 4-H ideals. " (George Holtzman)

4 SECRETARY OF STATE THAD EURE (L) LEADS SESSION... MR. MERRILL DAVIS SINGS STATE GOVERNMENT EXPLAINED BY EURE Secretary of State Thad Eure has been conducting a session, Know Your State Government, each day for Club Week special interest groups. The 4-H'ers travel by bus to the beautiful State Capitol where they are introduced to Secretary Eure by State 4 H Club Leader L. R. Harrill in the historic old Hall of the House of Rep res entatives. North Carolina's government is discussed--its location, history, leaders and purposes. Mr. Eure also shows the 75-year-old Oath Book in which the state s governors sign the oath as they take office. Four-H'ers also are treated to a guided tour of the modern new State Legislative Building. Mr. Eure says: "There's nothing like this in the land. " (Ann Lewis) MERRILL DAVIS ADDS MUCH TO CLUB WEEK Four-H'ers are proud to have Mr. D. Merrill Davis as Club Week song leader. This is his second year at Club Week. He is a teacher and supervisor of music in the city schools of Jackson, Ohio. Mr. Davis is a former 4-H'er who now has a family of 4-H'ers himself. Four H is the most significant youth movement in the world, " is his opinion of our organization. A jolly man with a musical personality, he has led singing at the National 4-H Club Congress for 15 years. He has assisted with the music at the 4 H Club Conference. He also has toured the United States with the National PTA Convention for 10 years. Delegates to Club Week are honored to have SuCh an inspiring man as their song leader. (Gilbert Tunnell)

5 4-H'ERS ARE A PART OF NCS, CHANCELLOR CALDVN ELL SAYS Dr. John T. Caldwell, chancellor of North Carolina State, addressed the 4-H'ers Thursday morning, using the topic: 4-H ers A Part of North Carolina State. " Dr. Caldwell told of the opportunities available to all boys and girls today. The chancellor informed the club members of the shortage of students in the field of agriculture. "Choose your career according to your aptitudeand talent, he said. (Larry Horne) TIME- - FRIEND OR FOE? "Time--Friend or Foe, is the title of this year's State 4-H Health Pageant to be presented by Iredell County tonight. The pageant, written by Mrs. J. S. Evans Jr., of Statesville, will be presented in the William Neal Reynolds Coliseum at 8 p. m. The coronation of the 1963 State King and Queen of Health will be held after the pageant. Dr. John S. " Mary Catherine Joyner of Edgecombe was announced state winner in Girls Public Speaking Wednesday night. Mary Catherine, a pretty brunette, entitled her speech "W by Stress Education? In it she stressed the opportunities of education and reasons for the sudden interest in quality education. Education has become more essential than ever before, she said. MORNING THOUGHT "Things Which Cannot Be Borrowed was the theme of Dr. Albert Edwards' Morning Thought Thursday. He pointed out that character must be built by each individual.
