3 INTERNATIONAL TRIO -'-i- Brenda Creech, Hender son, Rt. 1, discusses Club Week program with James Forbes (center) of Scotland and Oscar Salazar of Peru. State 4-H Club Week is taking on an international flavor. Participating in the activities this year are Oscar Salazar from Peru and James Forbes of Scotland. Both young men are here under the International Farm Youth Exchange (IFYE) 'program and have beeniliving with Tar Heel farm families for several weeks, sharing information from their own country and picking up ideas to take back home. ' I ' Salazar, 22, hopes to use the information he gathers to help him become a county agent in Peru. He is currently a university student, working toward a degree in animal science. He and his brother operate a 25 acre farm. Forbes,26, hopes to put the information he is gathering to work on the 400- acre farm he and his brother operate in Scotland. He is a member of the Scottish Association of Young Farmer Clubs, which is an adult equivalent to 4-H. Tar Heel farmers would find both advantages and disadvantages to Scottish farming. Selling eggs for 32 cents per dozen, which Forbes says he is now doing, would be hard on the pocketbook, but selling cattle for 33 [Cents per pound, would seem like a dream for hard pressed Tar Heel cattlemen. Forbes is currently staying on the J. W. Daughtery farm at Grayson. Prior to that he visited the Theodore Lowery and Harry Stone families near Rowland. He will visit farm families in Minnesota at the end of his North Carolina stay and return to Scotland in early October. Salazar has just completed a three-week visit with the Albert Coates family of Smithfield, Rt. 1. He has also visited the Weldon Idle farm, Kernersville, Rt. 3, the George Carraway farm, Havelock, Rt. 1, and the Fronnie Jones farm, near New Bern. He will visit farm families in Nebraska before returning to Peru in October.

4 Eress Reviewers Sweatingit Out The Alumni Building Tuesday afternoon was the scene of anxiety to thirtysix girls participating in the State Dress Revue. Each hoped she would be a winner but knew there could be only one. Thoughts such as it couldn't be _m e_, though" were running throughthe mind of every girl as she observed the garments with which she was competing. This was the showdown! The participants have worked many hours and long anticipated the results of this portion of the judging. Feet aching, the girls waited while the judges, Mrs. Daisy Collier, Mrs. Doris Dosier, Miss Marie Scott and Mrs. Jane Saunders observed the participants in the garments in which they will be attired for the State 4-H Dress Revue tonight Janie Shipley On Charles T. Vetter, Jr. Mr. Vetter gave a very interesting talk Tuesday morning in Assembly. Mr. Vetter has toured many countries and knows their ways and ideas. Mr. Vetter s talk was mostly on Russia and Communism. He had several posters which he used to show the 4-H'ers how the Russians avoid answering questions. Another important topic of Mr. Vetter's wonderful speech was the different forms of government. He explained that Russia helps those in need just to the point where they can change the government in Communism. I think this was one of the best speeches so far at Club Week. This speech was very educational and interesting Bryan Carraway WINNERS Vegetable Judging, Grading and Identificationuliianne Jones, Hertford Co. Boy s Public Speaking- Burton Brinson, Jr., Pamlico Co. Fruit and Vegetable Uses-Lynne Mincher, V. arren Co. Egg Cookery-~Jane Morris, Mecklenburg Co. 5 Wes WHI CH ONE? One of these three young men will be your new President. They are, left to right, Timothy Brindle, Burke Co. ; Bob Shipley, Watauga Co. ; and D. A. Cockman, Moore County. HE'S 'BIG' IN RUSSIA--Charles Vetter, Jr., U. S. Information Agency, uses a Russian poster to illustrate to delegates to 4-H Club Week the popularity of Cuba's Fidel Castro in the eyes of the Soviets. Looking on with interest are, left to right, Betty Ross, Wake County; Bryan Carraway, Craven; and Leonard Cox, Johnston. Vetter Addresed the 4-H assembly at Reynolds Coliseum yesterday.

6 "I AM 4 H - -- A Presentation by Robert V. ood, Foundations Office Symbolic of the quiet valleys and gentle meadows in which I was born, I am a four leaf clover, in verdent green, in a pure white field. I drew my first breath in the resolve of responsible men and women to help American youth Nurtured on the land, I now embrace the busy town. My goal is to learn And my testament to learn by doing I am 4- H Over two million boys and girls are under my wings Twenty million others walked my ways in bygone years My voice is heard in the halls of Congress And the President of the United States knows my name. I am a citizen in the making. I am 4 H I'm old yet I'm forever young. I'm local. I'm state - yet my philosophy has gone around the world. I am the International Farm Youth Exchange, a worker in the Peace Corps, An explorer of careers and a student of public affairs. I am hand in hand with the United States Eepartment of Agriculture, The Land-Grant University, my county government, my unselfish local Volunteer 4-H leader and the great industries of our nation. I am 4-H. I'm an Eskimo on the tundra by the Bering Sea, A boy on a tractor on the Great Plains, A girl with a lamb, a boy with a calf, A youngster with a seeing eye puppy, A knock at your door to get out the vote, A Future scientist, Or a little girl's first cake. In quest of the pattern of life I bow my head in church And with confidence look to the days that lie ahead of me. To this end, I have pledged my Head, Heart, Hands and Health To greater loyalty, larger service clearer thinking and better living. I am 4-H And with God s help I will be a finer woman, or better man.
