However, the Lord s first followers were not called by that name at all. It was not until many years after His Crucifixion and Resurrection that the term Christian became popularly used. There is a subtle, yet profound reference and statement in today s Gospel from St. Mark, a reading which presents to us the healing of a blind man. After Jesus has responded to the blind man s calls for mercy and healing, and the Lord has told him that it was his faith which had saved him, the Gospel tells us of the former blind man, Immediately he received his sight and followed him (Jesus) on the way. What is noteworthy about this is at that time and for the first years after Jesus Resurrection, His disciples were called followers of the way. They recognized Jesus as the way to live and the way to salvation. (Jesus stated more than once, I am the way. ) Thus, the man became not just healed but a follower of the Lord. Jesus healed the man on His way from Jericho to Jerusalem, where He would be crucified. The man most likely was with Him all the way. Would we be willing to follow the Lord on such a journey? And immediately he received his sight and followed him on the way. (Mark 10:52) Faith is believing in something even though you may not be able to see it. Many people think that miracles don t happen anymore. But, if you focus on the positive, not the negative, focus on your blessings instead of your hardships, miracles will seem common. We continue to pray the rosary at 8:30 a.m. before the 9 a.m. Sunday Mass during the month of October in honor of our Lady of the Rosary. F F T B Psalm 136: His Mercy Endures Forever I love the Psalms. And, I love the very idea of Pope Francis declaration of a Holy Year of Mercy. The Holy Year will open on December 8 th. As we proceed through the Holy Year of Mercy there is not one more appropriate piece of Scripture to become familiar with than Psalm 136. We encounter its refrain throughout Hebrew Scriptures and the New Testament, "His mercy endures forever". When we read it we relive the magnificence of the creation story. When we recite it we recount the glory of epic escape of the Hebrews from the slavery of Egypt. When we pray it we pray a litany of God s mighty deeds, those recounted in the Scriptures and those we have experienced in our own lives. You can write your own psalm and make your own very personal hymn of gratitude for God s mercy to you and a reminder to yourself to extend that mercy to others. Start with a list of the times you have seen or experienced God's mercy. Between each item insert "His mercy endures forever". For example, "Blessed be the Lord who healed my illness, for his mercy endures forever. Blessed be the Lord who gave me wonderful children, for his mercy endures forever. Blessed be the Lord who has given me the gift of faith, for his mercy endures forever. D D The St. Peter s Confirmation class is teaming up with the St. Peter s School Catholicity Committee for a diaper drive during the month of October. There will be a bin in the back of church to place diapers. We will also be collecting adult diapers for area nursing homes.
