We profess who we are by our shared belief and understanding of the Gospel. As people called to conversion, we come together to celebrate and bear witness to God s redemptive activity in our lives. We live out this mission of Christ through prayer and worship and through our baptismal call, which challenges us to minister to and with others. Grant them eternal rest and peace, O Lord! Denotes Deceased Prayers St. Peter s community prays for the following people: Angela Barbosa, Mary Brashear, James LaScala, Julie Lisac, Jim Maenle, Michelle Melland, Mandy Riemer, Mike Spaeth, Ivan Winfield, the elderly and infirm, the chronically ill and their caregivers. For those who attend to the dying and grieving; for medical professionals and first responders. Please notify the parish office of any new intentions or of any names that should be removed. For their safe return St. Peter s community continues to pray for the members of our parish and their family members who are serving in the armed services: Nicholas Bustamante, Jon Connelly, and Angelo Castillejo. Is 49: 1-6; Ps 139: 1B-3, 13-15; Acts 13: 22-26; Lk 1: 57-66, 80 Today is the Solemnity of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist (the Feast Day of the birth of John the Baptist). To say John the Baptist and Jesus were closely related and connected is an understatement. Both were foretold by prophets, especially Isaiah. The only record of the birth of John the Baptist appears in the Gospel of Luke and it is at the heart of our Gospel Reading today. A key player in this event is, of course, John the Baptist s father Zechariah. Zechariah was a Jewish priest, but when the Archangel Gabriel revealed to him that he would father a child, Zechariah refused to believe it. As a result he was rendered speechless until John was born. Zechariah had total trust in the Lord, however. Although it was traditional at that time to name the first son after the father, he and Elizabeth had been told that they were to name him John. As reported in the Gospel, Elizabeth said He will be called John. The family protested at which time Zechariah wrote His name is John. When he did that, Zechariah could speak once more. He did not say should be ; he said is. The trust shown by Zechariah is an example to us that we must trust in God, not just when it is convenient, but all the time. Those of advanced generations know who Lawrence Welk was. Born and raised Catholic, Welk practiced his faith throughout his life. He once said, Never trust anyone completely but God. Love people, but put your full trust only in God. Copyright 2018 Catholic Stewardship Consultants, Scripture Readings For the daily readings, visit usccb.org/bible/reading. Prison growth the resulting prison-industrial complex the business interests that capitalize on prison construction made imprisonment so profitable that millions of dollars were spent lobbying state legislators to keep expanding the use of incarceration to respond to just about everything health care problems like drug addiction, poverty that had led someone to write a bad check, child behavioral disorders, managing the mentally disabled poor, even immigration issues generated responses from legislators that involved sending people to prison. Never before had so much lobbying money been spent to expand American s prison population, block sentencing reforms, creating new crime categories, and sustaining the fear and anger that fuel mass incarceration, than during the last twenty-five years in the United States.
