Jesus does not make it easy for any of us when He says that. Even those who practice stewardship faithfully, even the best among us, have times when they may turn their back on those in need. The Solemnity that we celebrate today is popularly known as Christ the King. It is in Church terms relatively new. Instituted in 1921 by Pope Pius XI, it was originally on the last Sunday of October. It was renamed in 1969 by Pope Paul VI and moved to its present date, which is the last Sunday in the liturgical year, the last Sunday before Advent. The edict issued by Pope Pius XI in 1925 was called Quas Primas. It stated It has long been a custom to give to Christ the metaphorical title of King. He is King of Hearts by reason of His charity which exceedeth all knowledge. Today s readings trace our Lord Jesus Christ from the shepherd who tends his flock to the first fruits to the king. As stewards of His Word, His Kingdom, and His Hope, He invites us to see Him in everyone we see and everyone we encounter so that we can finally hear His glorious declaration, Come, you who are blessed by my Father. Thanksgiving Day Prayer Father all-powerful, Your gifts of love are countless and Your goodness infinite. On Thanksgiving Day we come before You with gratitude for Your kindness: open our hearts to concern for our fellow men and women, so that we may share Your gifts in loving service. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, Who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Advent Choir Concert St. Peter s Music and Liturgy offices present Love Came Down at Christmas Thursday, December 11 at 7 p.m. in the Church. The evening will include listening to Scripture readings, singing carols, and prayer. We invite you to join us as we prepare our hearts and minds for the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. A reception will follow the service in the basement of the Church. Advent Evening of Reflection with Rev. Steve Yavorsky, S.J., from the Ignatian Spirituality Center Monday, December 8, 7 p.m. (Following 6 p.m. Mass for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception) Church Main Room Advent is only Advent if you re willing to expect that something will happen, if you re waiting for someone to come, and also if you re willing to not define HOW it will happen. Advent is for people of desire. Now, the road goes in two directions. Christ is coming to us; we are going to Christ. The road between us has to be traveled, but there are ways to make the traveling easier. In this Advent Evening of Reflection, participants will enter more deeply into making that journey. Presentation and prayer, reflection and sharing, will help prepare the way. Waiting in Joyful Hope : Daily Reflections for Advent and Christmas by Bishop Robert F. Morneau For most of us the season of abundance, as Advent and Christmas is often called, finds us confronted with two shortages: time and money. This very small collection of reflections addresses both of those needs, First, it offers brief daily reflections for the time-challenged. And, second, the e-book version costs only $ 0.99! Prepare spiritually for the coming of Christ with this popular, easy-to-use annual guide. During the especially busy Advent and Christmas seasons, this little treasure offers brief, down-to-earth reflections that bring prayer and Scripture into everyday life in a thought-provoking and lasting way. Through Bishop Morneau's insightful reflections on Scripture readings from the daily Mass, readers will grow in their understanding of the word of God. This book will help busy people achieve their goal of enriching their personal prayer life during the seasons of Advent and Christmas. Available from the website of The Liturgical Press, a ministry of the Benedictine monks of St. John s Abbey in Collegeville, MN. 4

ACRE Students in grades 5 and 8 have taken the ACRE test, the Assessment of Children/ Youth Religious Education, an integrated assessment tool providing faith knowledge questions, as well as questions related to religious beliefs, attitudes, practices, and perceptions. All Diocesan schools participate in this assessment, and results are provided annually in the Catholic Key. Christmas Spirit Noon Dismissal November 25 Thanksgiving School will dismiss at Noon on Tuesday, November 25, for Thanksgiving Break, although faculty and staff will be spending some time that afternoon in professional development. We invite you to dine at the Brookside Goodcents that day, as between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m. that evening, Goodcents will give back to St. Peter s 25% of all STP sales! We would like to tell you how grateful we are for this St. Peter s community, one that is inspiring, giving, kind, and compassionate. Thank you for supporting our school! The St. Peter s Youth will be going on three mission trips this summer and need to raise some extra money to offset costs. Are you looking for great stocking stuffer ideas? Well look no more...we have just the perfect stocking stuffer for you. The youth are selling STP playing cards for $5.00 a deck. Last Sunday we celebrated two Rites of initiation for inquirers in the RCIA process: the Rite of Acceptance into the Order of Catechumens (for those preparing for their Baptism) and the Rite of Welcoming (for those already baptized in another Christian tradition who are seeking full communion with the Catholic Church). The following catechumens celebrated the Rite of Acceptance: Jake White Justin Wise Shannon Carpenter Amy Terreros Know Christ in Christmas All are invited to join us for quiet prayer during Advent and Christmastide. Please continue to pray for our catechumens and candidates as they now enter into a period of deeper formation in the RCIA process. Christmas Giving Program The first weekend of Advent, November will begin our Christmas Giving Program. Look for the Giving Tree in the foyer full of ornaments, (decorated by Mrs. Schmidt s art classes) with names, sizes, gender and wishes attached to each ornament. Please take an ornament and either buy a gift or gift card for your person, attach it VERY WELL to the ornament and return it to the back of church or the Legacy Center by Noon on Sunday, December 14. Gift cards allow the individuals to shop for their preferred color and size of gift, empowering them and assigning more dignity to the individual; and if purchased through the STP Rewards program, will benefit St. Peter s as well! You may still want to shop for small items to attach to the cards so the person will still have a little something to open on Christmas. Small children are fun and easier to buy gifts for but teenagers may want a little more control of their gifts we all did! And remember, as always any extra gift/grocery and gas cards are always needed in our Social Services Ministry for late-comers and unfulfilled ornaments. Please place these in an envelope marked for Social Services. Your generous support of St. Peter s is always appreciated by our extended parishioners. So far this year we have close to 50 families signed up, there will be more and we expect to help families from St Therese Little Flower as well. In addition our school has once again adopted 96 children through the Seton Center Christmas Family Adoption Program. Food Drive Our St. Peter s Christmas Food Drive is beginning! As in the past we are asking for items that can be enjoyed for the holidays (non-perishable), nutritious but yummy! We will be supplying Christmas boxes to over 65 families. We are also asking for grocery gift cards so our families can purchase meats and other perishables. (please consider using the STP rewards program.) Look for the beautifully decorated grocery sacks (thanks again to Mrs. Schmidt s art students) inside every door at church. Please take a bag, fill it and return it to church or the Legacy Center as soon as possible, but no later than Wednesday, December 10. For more information, call Dan at or dneedham@stpeterskc.org St. James Food Kitchen Our next shift is Wednesday, December 3. There s still room for another volunteer or two. There will be no shift for Wednesday, December 31 as the kitchen will be closed. 6
