4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:4). God is amazing, always creating, always finding new ways to draw us into closer relationship. Each year during the Advent and Christmas Seasons, I m overcome by the idea of God s immeasurable love coming to us in the form of a vulnerable human baby. At Easter, I m in awe at the depth of God s love for us, that God would choose to experience agonizing suffering, and pain, and grief for us. And just when I think there can t possibly be anything more God can do to connect with us, Pentecost Sunday. Pentecost is the day in the church we celebrate the fulfillment of Jesus promise to his disciples: that he will not leave us alone, that he will send someone to love, and encourage, and guide, and abide with us, so that we will again experience the depth and breadth of God s love for us. Pentecost is the day we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit. During this past Easter Season, we learned from Biblical stories how God draws us closer and closer. In a sermon series beginning this Pentecost Sunday (June 4), we will hear more about God s Creative Connection with us through the Holy Spirit. This same Holy Spirit has been at work from the very beginning, from the creation of the world to the creative ways God works to connect with us today. Come to worship. Come hear from the beginning, from the stories found in Genesis, how God speaks, creates, welcomes, works to redeem what we mess up, and brings us together for lifelong relationships. Come especially on Pentecost Sunday when eight youth make a public profession of faith. Come to support them as they publicly commit their lives to Jesus. Come to renew your own commitment to follow the way of Jesus. Come be amazed at God s creative connection with us. Come; connect. 6 Session Committees of New Hartford Presbyterian Church Below are brief descriptions of the committees responsible for the good of our church. Please contact the moderator if you have a question or a concern about any of the committees or if you wish to serve on a committee. The Christian Formation Committee is responsible for the Christian education of the congregation. We provide Christian educational opportunities for those ages pre-k through adult. Liz Worth, Dom Passalacqua, Co-Moderators The Church Life Committee encourages fellowship, cares for the needs of members and welcomes visitors. We, along with other church committees, provide monthly fellowship events for the entire church family such as the family picnic in June and packaging of food donations for our community through Your Neighbors. Church Life coordinates assistance of transportation and meals when needed by members and pairs children with adults in the ministry of prayer through the Prayer Partner Program. We welcome all to stop by our Information Table in Fellowship Hall. Betsey Weaver, Jim Weaver, Co-Moderators The purpose of the Communications Committee is to foster and facilitate the timely flow of information about NHPC s programs and events within the church and to the community. Rayna Schneider, Moderator The Finance Committee prepares the annual budget, authorizes unbudgeted expenses, oversees the endowment fund, signs checks, and appoints session members for counting and depositing money. It supervises the bookkeeper, works with the treasurer, oversees the annual stewardship campaign, provides for an annual audit, and prepares the annual financial report presented at the annual meeting. Jim Stewart, Moderator Mission Committee distributes money to organizations on behalf of the church, giving preference to local service groups that help our community and have ecumenical support. We also help with larger interests like the Presbyterian Mission Agency which helps with disaster assistance, hunger issues, and self-development programs by participating in One Great Hour of Sharing and the Christmas Joy offering. We will sometimes coordinate a larger mission project for the church, such as a mission trip. Some of June 2017 Page 5

7 our focal areas are hunger, at-risk youth, homelessness, disasters, and counseling. Hilda Pomeroy, Moderator The Personnel Committee supports and provides oversight and guidance for church staff by reviewing and updating job descriptions, reviewing salaries and benefits, and managing the departure or hiring of staff, when necessary. They direct and coordinate all maintenance of the buildings and equipment, which includes assessing physical needs, reviewing insurance policies and service contracts, reviewing requests for use of church by outside organizations, supervising the custodian, and providing for the opening up and securing the church building. Dave Kulow, DeForest Winfield, Co-Moderators. The Worship Committee ensures that the sanctuary is prepared for worship including the changing of the paraments and banners as scheduled, the preparation of communion for all services where it will be celebrated, the presence of sound operators to assist for all services. In addition, this committee orders worship supplies, assists in planning services appropriate to the season, selects the liturgist for the last Sunday of each month, assists with Children s Worship Bags, reviews and updates wedding/funeral policies and oversees the music budget.
