1 Country Chronicles October 2017 Cannon River and Cross of Christ Lutheran Parish, ELCA Pastor s Page Martin Luther taught that gratitude is the basic Christian attitude. Gratitude is not only the greatest of all the virtues, it is the source of all the others. Gratitude stems from the heart of the receiver. Jesus taught that the more you have been forgiven, the more gratitude and love you feel. "The one forgiven much, loves much." (Luke 7:47) The most popular hymn, Amazing Grace, is a hymn expressing great gratitude to God: "Amazing Grace how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me. I once was lost and now am found, was blind but now I see. 'Twas Grace that taught my heart to fear and Grace my fears relieved. How precious did that grace appear the hour I first believed. The Lord has promised good to me, His word my hope secures. He will my shield and fortune be as long as life endures. When we've been there ten thousand years, bright shining as the sun, we've no less days to sing God's praise then when we first begun." People in Alcoholics Anonymous who are working a Twelve Step Program go to God and ask for forgiveness and receive it. They speak about a feeling of gratitude that wells up in their hearts and stays with them for the rest of their lives. It is this feeling of gratitude for forgiveness that supports their sobriety. They say that if you keep gratitude in your heart, you will keep sober. If you loose your gratitude, you will loose your sobriety. The same is true for all Christians. If we loose our gratitude to God, we loose our faith and love. Gratitude for God's Amazing Grace is the hinge that the door of our Christian like swings. 1

2 Grateful people are happier, less depressed, less stressed, and more satisfied with their lives and relationships. Grateful people have higher levels of personal growth, purpose in life, and selfacceptance. Grateful people have more positive ways of coping with the difficulties of life and rely less on dysfunctional strategies like addiction. Grateful people even sleep better. "There is no peace for the wicked." (Isaiah 48:22) That is why Jesus teaches his harshest parable against the sin of ingratitude. The man in Jesus' Parable in Mathew 18 had been forgiven the debt of one billion dollars but does not feel grateful. His associates are appalled when he cannot forgive a subordinate $10,000. The parable makes us aware of how much we have been loved and forgiven and the logic of passing that on to others. One of the best ways to describe something is to describe its opposite. How does a rose smell? It does not smell like a dead skunk lying in the middle of the road stinking to high heaven. A grateful person is like the sweet smell of a rose (II Corinthians 2:14). An ingrate is like a dead skunk stinking to high heaven. It is often said at Twelve Step meetings that no one can stand an ingrate. The parable of Jesus shows how upset the other slaves were with the ingrate. Even little children who fail to say thank you embarrass their parents. Are children naturally grateful or do they have to be taught to say thank you? Parents are constantly telling their children to say thank you. Even Shakespeare has King Lear lament, "Sharper than a serpent's tooth is an ungrateful child." Gratitude is the Christ candle in the cathedral of the human soul which gives it light and warmth. Gratitude is what makes little people big and big people small. Gratitude transforms a small heart into a big heart. Gratitude is the most beautiful garment that Paul tells un to put on. Ingratitude has been called the halitosis of the soul. It is the only thing that makes God turn his face aside. The 2

3 prayer of he ingrate is an insult to God. The prophets spoke of the prayers of ingrates rise to the nostrils of God and offend God. The ungrateful person reaches as high as they can to get, whereas the grateful person stoops as low as they can to give. Because, implicit in gratitude is the desire to share the gift. What gift makes you feel happy and loved? Psychologists tell us that there are five languages of love: touch, words of affirmation, quality time, gifts, and acts of service. Couples that are dating learn what makes their fiancés happy and it is unfortunate if they stop speaking this language after they are married. Gratitude is the language of love that God is hoping for from all of us. It is the reason that the Bible is filled with the call to "Give Thanks to God!" Ephesians 5:18-20: Be filled with the Spirit; speaking to each other in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord; giving thanks always in all circumstances in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ and to God, the Father. Philippians 4:6-7: Don t be anxious about anything; rather, bring all your requests to God in your prayers and petitions, and give thanks. Then the peace of God that passes all understanding will keep your hearts and minds safe in Christ Jesus. Colossians 3:15: Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which you were called in one body, and be thankful. Pastor Robert C. 19 Join us for dinner and a movie on Saturday October 28 th serving dinner at 5:30pm and movie about Martin Luther to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the reformation at our church. LUTHER (2004): Joseph Fiennes stars as Martin Luther, the brilliant man of God whose defiant actions changed the world, in this epic, ravishingly beautiful film that traces Luther's extraordinary and exhilarating quest for the people's liberation. Regional princes and the powerful Church wield a fast, firm and merciless grip on 16th-century Germany. But when Martin Luther issues a shocking challenge to their authority, the people declare him their new leader and hero. Even when threatened with violent death, Luther refuses to back down, sparking a bloody revolution that shakes the entire continent to its core. Luther is the story of a spiritual leader, German monk Martin Luther, in opposition to the religious orthodoxy of the time. His goal--to bring God to the people and to take money, fear, and shame out of the equation-- made him a reformer to some, a heretic to others. 19
