1 The Church News Volume 7 Issue 11 November 2012 Schertz United Methodist Church Conference Minutes October 16, 2012 This networking conference of five San Antonio District churches (Bethany, Jacob s Chapel, New Hope, Schertz and Universal City) began at 7:00 PM in the Universal City UMC sanctuary with praise singing and a message by District Superintendent Reverend Carl Rohlfs. The group service concluded at 7:50 PM so each church could meet for their individual charge/church conferences. Reverend Richard Young, Senior Pastor of Universal City UMC, was the facilitator of our Church Conference. Seventeen Schertz UMC members were in attendance. Election of Conference Secretary: Lou Ann Allison, Schertz UMC Council Secretary, was elected by voice vote as secretary for this church conference. Presentation of Candidates for Representative Ministry: The following members were approved by voice vote in the indicated areas: Dr. Stefanie Greiner and Gerald Goodridge were re-affirmed as candidates for ordained ministry, Tom and Clara Bennett were re-affirmed as lay ministers, and Tom and Clara Bennett, Edd Dries and Arnold Gittens were re-certified as lay speakers. Adoption of Pastor s Salary: The 2013 Church/Pastor Compensation Report was distributed and reviewed. George Ricks made a motion to approve the pastor s salary and Peg Petolillo seconded the motion. The motion was approved by voice vote. Presentation of Nominations Report: The Nominating Committee s Report of 2013 Church Officers and Committee Members was distributed. Reverend Young asked if anyone had questions regarding the report. With none voiced, Reverend Young asked for approval of the full report. The full report was approved by voice vote. Worship Schedule Family Service at 8:30 am Praise Service at 9:45 am Traditional Service at 11:00 am We have Sunday School at 9:45 and 11:00 am Communion is served on the first Sunday of each month at all services. 2 Page 2 The Church News Minutes from the October 16 Church conference Continued From Page One Goal Setting: Stefanie Greiner led a discussion on the church s goal setting initiative for 2013 and reviewed the 2012 results through September. Professions of Faith: Our goal for 2012 was 20 and thus far we are at 12. Our goal for 2013 is 30. Worship Attendance: Our goal for 2012 was 307 and thus far we are at 271. Our goal for 2013 is 350. Number of Small Groups (Various Small Groups plus Sunday School Classes and Bible Study Groups): Our Goal for 2012 was 25. Our goal for 2013 is 30. Number of Disciples Engaged in Mission: Our goal for 2012 was 100% and remains at 100% for Amount Given to Mission: We paid out 100% on our apportionments in So far in 2012 we ve paid 54.1%. We have also given $1, through the district for second mile giving (any mission giving over apportionments), plus more for Imagine No Malaria, Uganda Orphans Choir, RACAP and other organizations. Our 2013 goal is to pay 100% on our apportionments. After discussion, it was decided Church Council will set the 2013 goal for second mile giving, plus discuss how to gather information on how much the church and small groups give on second mile giving. Reverend Young commented that some churches set a goal of 10% of their church budget for second mile giving. Creating a Culture of Growth Building Committee Report: George Ricks reported the new sanctuary is six or seven weeks away from Substantial Completion and a Certificate of Occupancy, which keeps us on schedule to hold Christmas Eve services in the new sanctuary. The pews are currently being manufactured. Grace Place is 99.9% complete and is in operation. Report Submitted: A Music Ministry Update report from Leah Krenek, Director of Music and Worship Arts, was distributed. Dismissal: There being no further business, Reverend Young adjourned the meeting with prayer at 8:25 PM. United Methodist Men s Pancake Supper Submitted by Bill Timberlake The Schertz United Methodist Men s (UMM) Pancake Supper will be on Saturday, November 3, 2012 from 5 to 7 pm. Tickets can be purchased from Bill Timberlake in the Education hallway (near the kitchen area) after the 8:30 and 11:00 services Sunday, October 28 or at the door the day of the supper. 3 Volume 7 Issue 11 Page 3 Altar Rail Offering The Altar Rail Offering for November is for Harvest Sunday On Sunday, November 4, 2011 we celebrate Harvest Sunday to assist RACAP with their Thanksgiving and Christmas basket program. There are a number of ways that you can help RACAP provide the food for the many people in our communities that would not otherwise be able to prepare a holiday meal for their family. Financial donations to pay for the perishable items and turkeys are welcomed and can be given on November 4 for the Altar Rail Offering, or sent directly to RACAP. Please be sure to designate on the memo line that your donation is to go to the Holiday Program. Another way to help is to donate the items listed below. A box has been put in the narthex and another one in the office hallway for your donated non-perishable items. If you would like to sponsor a family, RACAP can assign families to individuals, Sunday School classes, youth groups, or even with your neighbors. Sponsoring a family would mean that your group would provide all of the items that are on the list, including the perishable items. To sponsor a family pick up an application from the table in the narthex or the office hallway and return to the RACAP office located at 307 Pfeil Street, Schertz, They are open Monday through Friday, 1 to 3 pm. Items Needed: Chicken broth Flour Granulated Sugar (4 lb. bag) Brown Sugar (1 lb.) Canned Green Beans and Corn Evaporated Milk Stuffing Mix Canned Pumpkin Yams Fruit Cocktail Cranberry Sauce Donated funds will be used to purchase turkeys and perishable items for the baskets. If you are sponsoring a family, the basket should also include eggs, margarine/butter, pie shells, and rolls/bread.

4 Page 4 The Church News The Ugandan Orphans Choir Submitted by Pastor Linda Montgomery Following is a letter I received from Sharye Cornmesser, the Ugandan Choir Ministry Manger. I would like to share it with everyone... Dear Reverend Montgomery: I want to extend to you my sincerest appreciation for the hospitality and grace demonstrated to the children and staff of the Ugandan Orphans Choir during their recent visit to your church! Many thanks to you and your congregation for allowing the choir and staff to share the reality of life for children living in developing counties. This opportunity was of eternal value. You may already be aware, but your congregation profoundly blessed us with their generosity! In fact, after a final accounting of love offering and number of children sponsored, your church gave $1, and 5 grateful children were sponsored! We praise the Lord for this provision and what it will mean for the lives of many, many children! If you have any further questions or feedback, please feel free to contact me. Operation Christmas Child Submitted by Laura Bull On Sunday, November 11th, Schertz United Methodist Church will pack boxes for Operation Christmas Child. The mission of Operation Christmas Child is to demonstrate God's love in a tangible way to needy children around the world, and together with the local church worldwide, to share the Good News of Jesus Christ. This is our seventh consecutive year of donating items and packing boxes for this outreach. Last year, we packed 90 boxes for Operation Christmas Child. These boxes went around the world. Operation Christmas Child received 8.2 million boxes worldwide in This year, Samaritan s Purse goal is to reach 1 million children. Let s be a part of reaching this goal. We need donations of items for the boxes for boys and girls from 2 to 14 years old. We also need financial donations to help pay for shipping. Each shoe box costs $7 to send it to a child somewhere in the world. Help us with this outreach. Help a child open a box for Christmas. In each box is also the word of the Lord in the language of the child. Help spread God s word and God s love. A donation box is located in the Narthex of the church. Financial donations can be placed in the offering and noted as OCC. Gift ideas include: Toys: small cars, balls, dolls, stuffed animals, kazoos, yo-yos, jump ropes etc. School supplies: pens, pencils, sharpeners, markers, writing pads, coloring books etc. Hygiene items: tooth brush, toothpaste, combs, mild bar of soap in a zip lock bag etc. Other: hard candy, lollipops, mints, gum, socks, ball caps, sunglasses, hair clips etc.

6 Page 6 The Church News Generosity Team Submitted by Renee Harvey, Chairperson One again we think about the vows we make when we become members of the United Methodist Church. We promise to uphold the Church by our prayers, our presence, our gifts, our service and our witness. This month we explore service with Feet to our faith. Feet to our faith** Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It s not. ~Dr. Seuss As a mainline denominational church, it is not unusual to receive an that might read, Why bother trying to [prevent malaria in Africa - build schools in Haiti - etc.]? You ll never fully succeed. Besides, what are you saving them from? They ll probably starve to death any way. The words are harsh and the viewpoint terribly misguided, but these feelings should not be dismissed or ignored. In fact, they reflect questions Christians don t often want to talk about: does doing good, do any good? If you re asked to change the world, does it really change? The truth is, life is messy and true life happens in the midst of the mess. United Methodists have believed, from the beginning, that each of us is called to participate in outreach and show compassion. Compassion isn t sympathy. It s not pity. It s coming along side someone who needs us. It s feeling their pain and working toward a solution along with them. No act of kindness is too random or too small. On a chilly, dreary April morning, more than 2,000 people turned out for the first annual Louisiana Skeeter Run. Held in eight cities throughout the state, community members walked and ran to raise money and awareness for Imagine No Malaria, an initiative of The United Methodist Church. The event was a huge success. As United Methodists, we put feet to our faith, said Margaret Johnson, Skeeter Run director. It s a great example of who we are. When asked why she took part in the event, one participant smiled and said, As Christians, that s our job. It s what we re supposed to do. In other words, it s about compassion. When the clouds over Louisiana finally broke apart and the sun returned, maybe the walkers, runners, and volunteers that took part in the Skeeter Run that April day didn t change the world. Maybe they just made a world of difference. And they re not alone. Each year, in communities all around the world, United Methodists are working with their neighbors to clean up after disasters, get playgrounds back in shape, offer homeowner assistance for seniors, hold fundraisers to fight disease, help for single moms, children, and the hungry, hold an 'elephant wash' to support zoo habitat, and much, much more. In the past two years, United Methodists have served more than 4 million people in 15 countries through community outreach events. These are not statistics. They are life-changing stories. Stories like Jimmy Parton s, a dying man whose home had fallen into disarray as cancer ravaged his body. Myers Memorial United Methodist Church organized a team of volunteers to grant Jimmy s last wish to provide his blind daughter and caregiver niece with a better place to live. From every corner of the community, volunteers of all ages stepped forward to work together as Jimmy watched in wonder from his bed.

7 Volume 7 Issue 11 Page 7 Generosity Team Article Continued from Page 6 In just one day, the volunteers had not only repaired and cleaned the home; they had cleared the yard and purchased new appliances and a ceiling fan. The next day, Jimmy died. His niece called the act of kindness a miracle. And it wasn t just a miracle for Jimmy and his family. If even just for a day, everyone involved met their most basic human need to give love and receive it. Compassion is a road we go down that s far from inviting. It s a path of treacherous terrain often blocked by fallen trees or indifference. Frankly, it s easier to sit on a stump and declare efforts to make a difference futile. But simply put, it s what Jesus would do. Help someone. Pass along a smile. Enrich a life. Building schools as much as spiritual faith is all in the everyday work of the people of The United Methodist Church. **Author unknown. Article from United Methodist resources for Rethink Church. An old Cherokee told his grandson, My son, there is a battle between two wolves inside us all. One is Evil. It is anger, jealousy, greed, resentment, inferiority, lies and ego. The other is good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, humility, kindness, empathy, and truth. The line between right and wrong can be thin and have a lot of gaps in it. If only a manual existed that could help us make decisions when our minds are clouded with feelings like anger, jealousy, greed, resentment, inferiority, lies, and ego. Then, making good decisions wouldn t be such a challenge. The internal battle that we face between good and evil isn t as cute as the idea that a little devil and angel stand on either shoulder, whispering suggestions of what you should do into your ears. Two more voices would just make things even more complicated, anyway. Sometimes our choices may inadvertently hurt a close friend. Other times our choices may have a huge positive impact on someone. Whatever path we choose, we become known for those choices which build upon each other and make up our character. Every choice, good or bad, adds up the time you opened the door for the older couple walking into the restaurant, as well as the time you lied to your boss about why you were late on Monday morning. The tricky thing is remembering that each decision is based off the one before. Too many bad decisions, and suddenly you're in a downward spiral that's hard to correct. When you think about the multitude of decisions we make each day (many of which we don t even think about), wouldn t it be great to have a way to track them? There has to be a 'karma counter' app for that, right? Then, everyone could just reach into their pocket, pull out their phone, and see how they're doing for the day. If the "bads" had racked up a few tallies, then you could just work harder to bring the "goods" back up. Unfortunately, no such app exists but maybe taking an occasional break to think back on your week and making mental notes on how you re doing could keep things on track. SERVV Sale Submitted by Alice Sutherlun On December 2 the church will be joining with the children's choir to celebrate Christmas Around the World. There will be nativities from around the world for sale in the quad room. The nativities are from the organization SERVV supported by UMCOR. SERRV is a nonprofit organization with a mission to eradicate poverty wherever it resides by providing opportunity and support to artisans and farmers worldwide. For more than 60 years, SERRV has worked to eradicate poverty through their direct connections with low-income artisans and farmers. They market their crafts and foods, find joint solutions to their challenges, and help them grow and embrace the future. One of the first alternative trade organizations in the world, SERRV is a founding member of the World Fair Trade Organization (formerly IFAT) and a founding member of the Fair Trade Federation (FTF). They strive to enrich lives around the world and to inspire real change for the better. Their work encompasses more than just buying and selling. They offer prepayments so their partners can sustain their business. Create new designs so they can build their markets. Teach new skills so they can develop their craft. Provide grants so they can expand their resources. SERVV supports equal rights for women, guide sustainable development and of course, pay a fair wage. 9 Volume 7 Issue 11 Page 9 Children s Ministry Submitted by Jodi Gutierrez, Director Family Advent Event Please join us on Sunday, December 2nd from 4-6 pm for our family Advent event. Our activities will include old fashioned Christmas crafts and cookie decorating. A fun time will be had by all!!! Sunday school at Grace Place has been awesome. We are not only learning many concepts from the Bible, but having fun doing it!! The preschool Sunday School class is growing by leaps and bounds. They have been studying how God loves Children in Africa. The kid s have loved the music and drums. K-5th have been studying Isaac and Rebekkah. We have made beautiful bowls, watched a live play (performed by our own Team Jesus), and have had wonderful discussion about God s plans for Isaac and his family. Children s Sabbath was a huge success!! Many of our children participated in our services. It was a joy to see them serving God in so many roles during worship. Backyard Burger Cook-Off is on Sunday, November 18, 2012 at Schertz United Methodist Church $20.00 Entry Fee Open to All! Start Time is 1:30 pm/judging at 4:00 pm -Cutoff Date to Enter is November 11 Entry Forms can be found on the table in the narthex and the table in the office hallway. Teams will be judged on 1 8 oz. hamburger. (You will also need to have 18 4 oz. hamburgers made for the crowd) The hamburger meat will be provided. You bring the buns and the fixings that you will be putting on your burgers, in addition to a BBQ Pit, cooking utensils, charcoal, wood chips, etc., lighter fluid and tables to use for your set up.

PRAYER CHAIN If you, or someone you know is in need of prayers while suffering an illness, grief or other concern, please contact Millie Cooper at mimcooper@satx.rr.com and she will send a message out to the congregation for special prayers. If you have never requested to be put on the prayer chain and would like to receive prayer requests, Millie (at the address listed above) with your address. You will then receive all requests that are sent out. If you do not have a computer, you can be put on the telephone prayer chain. Please call Millie Cooper at and let her know that you would like to be called with the prayer requests that she receives. She will have one of the three volunteers give you a call.

On Wednesday, 7 November, at 6:30 pm in the Four-Plex, our monthly get-together will begin with a wonderful potluck dinner. If this is your first time, please come as our guest. If not, please bring a delectable dish to share (Ok, even if it s not delectable, bring it anyway and let us be the judge!). Our program this month will be a presentation by the Director of the Wounded Warriors Programs. After the presentation we will proudly present them a check of $400...the profits from our last bake sale. THANK YOU to everyone who donated to our bake sale!! Ladies, it s not too late to make your donation to the World Thank Offering, even if you missed the October meeting. We will not be sending the money in until after the November meeting. November 11 will be a special gathering. In place of lessons we will have experiential worship designed by our older kids. Stress is No Joke By The Vine Wellness Group: A Counseling Ministry With the Fall semester now in full swing and the holiday season right around the corner, it is fair to assume most people are feeling some type of stress. Kids need to be driven around, partners are spending more time at work, schedules are more chaotic, and yet life does not hesitate to throw us a curveball or two on top of all this. The bad news is chronic stress has a long list of possible harmful effects on our bodies: hypertension, migraines, ulcers, chronic diarrhea, muscle tension, and fatigue. Stress can even suppress the immune system so that our odds of catching the flu or a cold increase (just in time for flu season). Truly, research has shown that just about every system in the body can be damaged by stress. Now for the good news: you can reduce the damage caused by the body s stress response by learning powerful techniques such as deep abdominal breathing and meditation. A noted Harvard Medical School Professor, Dr. Herbert Benson, first coined this relaxation response idea as a way to use your mind to improve your health. There s more good news: many of these effective techniques can be learned on your own and cost little time and energy to incorporate into your daily or weekly routine. There are countless resources at your disposal to help you battle stress. One of our favorites is the Relaxation & Stress Reduction Workbook, a self-help book that presents information and step-bystep directions on numerous stress-fighting techniques. The information is out there, but it s up to you to decide if you want to make positive changes or not. Many people need help making those changes, and that s when a therapist can be useful. Whether it s on your own or with the aid of someone else, it s important that you address your lifestyle and how it s affecting your body. Your health depends on it!
