2 From My Heart to Yours.. Pastor Jim Harper We live in a world of lightning-quick change.. For example, did you know that the average science textbook in our school systems is outmoded in about 18months? In the 21st century we live in a world of constant and rapid change. All of this means that modern organization must stay nimble and up-to-date as it relates to their strategies and structures. Churches especially must be vigilant in constantly evaluating their ministry and programs if they are Kids Hope United Update Please be in prayer for: The Hudelson region, that we will find the necessary resources to continue most of our programs; For the members of our staff serving in Iraq and Afghanistan; For the children in our residential program to know God s love For those families we serve who are affected by substance abuse, poverty, depression and hopelessness, that they will find hope through our services Murrow Indian Children s Home Update Please be in prayer for Director Joan Brown's daughter, who was killed in a kitchen fire. Lift up their family. to be relevant for our contemporary world. One way that we are attempting to stay up-to-date at FBC is in the creation of a Ministry Renewal and Enhancement Task Force. This task force was appointed by our moderator Bob Nicolet and came together on April 10, They have four basic goals that they will tackle in To make our Constitution and Bylaws more relevant for 21st century ministry as it relates to the Diaconate and Commissions To optimize our effectiveness as a church and to increase participation in leadership settings To eliminate any unnecessary duplication of efforts and energy To explore ministry team and task force models of ministry. Every decade since the 1970 s, First Baptist Church of Jacksonville has appointed a special task force to evaluate and update aspects of our bylaws and our constitution. In 2008, the time has again arrived for this update process. And in this day and age I believe that it is even more imperative that we do a great job of updates because of the constant changing of the ministry landscape that we find ourselves in. Churches which are healthy and relevant are constantly evaluating their ministries and procedures. The next meeting of this important task force will be May 22nd. All of their recommendations will flow through the channels of our diaconate leadership and duly called business meetings. So be on the lookout for more updates. Also, please keep these task force members in your prayers. 3 Raise the Roof II $100,000 $10,430 Mother-Daughter Celebration Many people have come through the doors of First Baptist Church to worship, get married, have parties, have meetings, receive counseling, sing, experience fellowship and the list could go on and on. We each of had our own unique experiences in this building. It has provided us a location for all these things and more. Now our building needs us to provide something in return. As most of you are aware we are in the process of replacing flat portion of roof over Sunday School rooms and above the narthex. Cost of doing this is approx. $100,000. This will deplete most of the reserves the church has set aside for capitol expenditures. Why a reserve? Our church home is going on 40 years of age and buildings such as this will have needs in the future. While the building now is in pretty good repair, unexpected problems may arise at any time. Heating/air conditioning, organ, carpets, brick walls and mortar, parking lot and roof above sanctuary will all one day need work. It is not a matter of if it will need work but when. Items in and on the building are getting worn out and will need our attention to keep it in good repair now and hopefully for generations to come. A committee was formed several weeks ago to work on a capitol fund drive to replenish the monies used to replace the roof. The committee agreed to call the campaign RAISE THE ROOF ll. Approx. 15 years ago we had a very successful campaign for the sanctuary roof called Raise the Roof. Therefore we felt it appropriate to call this campaign RAISE THE ROOF ll. Our goal is by July 1 st to raise $100,000. As of April 30, contributions totaling $10,430 have been received so far. If donation is mailed to church office please indicate clearly it s for Raise the Roof ll. There are envelopes placed in the pews for your convenience. Prayerfully consider what you can give toward this worthwhile campaign. All contributions will be greatly appreciated. Our annual Mother- Daughter celebration, sponsored by Peggy Smith Circle, will be held on Monday, May 12, 2008 at 6:30 pm in the Narthex at First Baptist Church. All ladies and children are invited. If you don t have a mother or a daughter who can come with you, don t let that stop you adopt one for the evening, or just come to enjoy the meal and fellowship. Lori Pahde will be presenting an interesting program, Two Pioneer Mothers, from the Laura Ingalls Wilder family. Each family is asked to bring a salad and their own table service. Beverages will be furnished. Any questions please call Barb Wood at Reservations due by Saturday, May 10, VOLUME 15 Page 3
4 Christmas Spirit Thrives All Year Long It s time once again to start thinking about donating items for the First Baptist Church Christmas Project. The Christmas Project helps needy families in our church family and the Jacksonville community by providing much needed items at a time of the year when those in financial straits feel even more stress than usual. We want to lift some of that burden. Barb Baker coordinates this effort and will do so again this year. A box, wrapped up like a large Christmas gift, has been placed in the Narthex to receive your donations. Items requested are: May: Towels and wash cloths. June: Shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste and other toiletry items. July: Paper products (bathroom tissues, paper towels, facial tissue). August: Kitchen towels, dish cloths, hot pads, dish detergent. September & October: gift cards. November: this is the month to choose names from the giving tree and purchase suggested items. December: Non perishable food items. In addition to things listed here, gift cards (Wal-Mart, ShopKo, Dollar General, gas cards, etc) are welcome and accepted at any time. Delivery of donations will be made to families on December 15, Health Notes Sis Goben, RN, Parish Nurse Reduce Your Salt Intake and Lower Your Risk For High Blood Pressure Q: Why is too much sodium in the diet unhealthy and what health problems can it cause? A: Our bodies need small amounts of sodium daily to function properly. Unfortunately, most people consume much more sodium than their bodies require. Too much sodium in the diet can cause complications such as fluid build-up, swelling and high blood pressure. High blood pressure can increase your risk for stroke or heart disease. Q: How much sodium should a person consume each day? On average, how much do Americans consume each day? A: The American Heart Association recommends no more than 2300 milligrams of sodium a day. Tha ts equivalent to one teaspoon of salt. The typical American diet consists of too much sodium, largely because of a high consumption of packaged and processed foods. The average American consumes 1 to 3 teaspoons of Office Hours: Mondays 10am-3pm Blood pressure clinics: held the second and fourth Sundays of each month in the Narthex Home, nursing home and hospital visits: upon request Contact: First Baptist Church or Sis Goben, RN sodium a day, or up to 6000 milligrams, three time the recommended amount. Q: What are good ways to reduce sodium intake/ A: Eat more fresh foods and limit packaged, canned and processed foods. Think about purchasing the bulk of grocery items from the outer perimeter of your grocery store, where you ll find fresh produce, eat and dairy products. Prepare foods yourself and modify the seasonings and ingredients to include lower-sodium products in place of their highersodium counterparts. Limit added salt at the table and during cooking. Experiment with herbs or seasoning blends that are salt free, such as Mrs. Dash, lemon juice or onion or garlic powders. Aim for approximately 600 milligrams of sodium at meals. Read food labels. Look for hidden ingredients that contain the word sodium (monosodium glutamate, or MSG, sodium nitrate, disodium phosphate). Be cautious with salt substitutes. Not all are created equally. Many still contain some sodium. Micca Donohoo, Clinical Dietitian Memorial Medical Center Page 4 THE BAPTIST BELL
