2 Page 2 Reverend Reflections by Jim Stovall Measure once, cut twice. Measure twice, cut once! Jesus once said, No one would start out on a journey without first counting the cost. Be prepared! Paul said, Faith, hope and love, these three, but the greatest of these is love. Hope is found in the wings of the Eagle and she never fears to take to the skies. In real life we may not get the things we hope for, but we make of life something far greater because we hope! Hope stands on high ground right there with love and faith. Even when we make of hope an object to be received, or a goal to be achieved, receiving or achieving does not end the process and we must make new goals, to the point that we are hoping with the last breath. When caught in a negative funk, some people might quit hoping, because nothing seems to work. Bogus! We don t hope to make things work, hoping does not depend on success. We hope because hoping alone lifts our spirits and keeps moving us forward. Hoping often is close kin to prayer, which clears the cobwebs and sets the failures and losses aside so the windows to the future are clearer. Prayer often does not get us what we want, but draws us closer to who we need. Hope even has an identity. The church, in part, is a community of hope. People may think that they go to church to find hope, but really we are the community of hope. Sometimes churches do actual planning to go with this hope attitude. But hoping is always bigger, higher, wider and deeper than the planning. I hope you have a great week, Love, Jim Will you volunteer your time? The Recreation Dept. is developing a community program for children and youth in July and August. Basketball and 4 square for kids 4th grade and up, 2 days a week. Sewing (we need machines or donations to buy one) Tutors in reading, math, or other subjects, 2 hours a week. Call Jim Stovall or Judith Richardson ( ) to help out with this summer program. Treasurer s Mini Monthly Report Interest Paid May 1-31, 2008 $ 1, Debt Balance April 30, 2008 $ 438, Principal Paid May 2008 $ 2, Debt Balance May 31, 2008 $ 436, Notes from the Moderator By now I hope that all have had a chance to meet or at least hear Fran Watley, our new piano player. Fran has agreed to play for us at the 10:30 worship service at least until after Labor Day when we go back to one service. I first heard Fran play at the Community For Christ Christmas Dinner and was very impressed. Welcome her and enjoy her wonderful gift. Now that we are having all kinds of summer time company, why not bring them to church on Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings. Hats and gloves for women and coats and ties for men are definitely not required so not having Sunday Clothes is no reason for your guests to stay home. July 6 will be Buy a Board for Habitat Sunday. The youth of our church will be offering you a chance to donate to the new Habitat For Humanity house number nine. You may offer a blessing, bible verse or wish for success written on a board that will be used in the actual construction of the house. Take a little time right now to pray for those of our members who are in the hospital, care center or confined to the home. A loving God hears our prayers no matter what time of day or day of the week. Nip Mohler, Moderator nmohler05@charter.net Christian Women s Fellowship The CWF would like to thank all the members of the church for their tremendous support of the annual Yard and Bake Sale. So many great items were donated and so many people came to shop that it was a huge success! It is amazing to see the change from Monday when all the donated items are in boxes and sacks stacked on the floor and tables to Thursday evening when everything is priced and displayed attractively. Mary Cline did an outstanding job of directing this whole process. Our summer schedule is slightly different from the rest of the year. We will have our July 8 and August 12 meetings in the library at 1:00 PM. We have a number of important activities to make decisions about so we need everyone to be at the meetings, if possible. See you there!

3 Adopt-a-Space The May 3 Work Day sponsored by your Elders and the Property Committee was a great success. About 30 plus people showed up to pull weeds, paint railings, fix light fixtures, plant flowers, wash windows and generally clean up various areas of the church. As we worked around the church we realized there was so much more that needed to be done that we didn t have time or the ability to do. With the approval of the Church Board, the Elders are sponsoring an Adopt-a-Space program. We would like to have various groups and individuals agree to adopt a room or a space within the church or an area on the outside of the church. The group or individual who adopts the space would be responsible for checking on the space on a regular basis, like one time a month or so, depending upon the space. If something needs to be repaired, you would notify the Property Committee chair. If something needs to be cleaned, you can do it or notify the custodians. Some of the repairing and cleaning can be done by the adoptee. As an example, the Parable Class has decided to repaint their classroom. Any trash will be thrown away. Any furniture that needs repair will be reported to the Property Committee. The class will bring a vacuum cleaner and get into those corners that are so hard to get with the big church vacuum. The baseboards will be washed down and the windows cleaned out. If lights are burned out, they will tell the custodian. You get the idea! Other spaces that need to be adopted might be the narthex, the balcony in Loehr Center, Parlor, restrooms, closets, the children s playground.the list goes on and on. Our hope is that every individual or group will be willing to join in Adopting-a-Space. This property belongs to us all. This IS God s home. Let us all assume the needed responsibility to show God how much we honor Him. A sign up sheet will be in the Narthex on Sunday mornings and in the church office during the week. Sign up or call the office to become a proud owner in the Adopt-a-Space program. Carroll Rinker Community Vacation Bible School July :00 a.m. till noon Lake West Christian Academy Highway 5, Sunrise Beach Bring your kids and grandkids they will have a great time! Guest Singer for Wednesday Praise Service on July 23 Mr. Walter Plant will return to West Lake Christian Church to share his program of Country Gospel and Southern Gospel music. Born blind, Walter is a self-taught musician, and he was his church s organist and pianist from the ages of Walter is a professional singer and musician and with the help of his wife, Joy, he performs for many organizations and churches. This will be the second time that Walter has performed at WLCC. Mark your calendar and plan to attend Wednesday, July 23 at 7:00 p.m. and hear Walter Plant present his message in song. Have you noticed the new canvas speaker covers? Advanced Custom Canvas has donated the new speaker covers for our Outdoor Chapel. We want to thank Todd and his crew for donating their time and materials to design and make our custom covers. These will help to keep our speakers in good shape all summer long. Thank you, Advanced Custom Canvas! We ve A Story To Tell A story book of the history of West Lake Christian Church is being compiled by Virginia Carlson. She is asking all of us to contribute our stories, anecdotes and accounts, good and bad, funny or sad, old, old history or new, of our times here at WLCC. Place your stories in the Our Church History box in the church office. Be sure to include your name in case Virginia has a question. We will be collecting stories all through the summer, so start jotting down your memories, and bring them to church. This story book will only happen if YOU bring YOUR stories! Page 3

4 Stewardship Here we are, officially into summer and our busy time here at the lake. Everywhere we look prices are rising. Gasoline is pushing $4.00 per gallon, propane is up, food prices are rising and we are all feeling the effects in our check book. Unfortunately, so is our church. Our church depends upon each of us and our gifts. If you are going to be away this summer, please remember the church when you pay your monthly bills. If you have fallen a little behind in your giving would you please make every effort to catch up. And if you are in the position to do so, please consider giving a little extra. Many of us are on fixed incomes, but think about how your church must operate on an unknown income. Please give! Love in Jesus, Kelly Caldwell Lamb House Lamb House is starting the summer season which means food stamps don t stretch as far because children are not receiving a free lunch and breakfast at school. Everyone of us has noticed higher grocery prices for several months and now gas prices we wonder where it will end. Because of your continuing coupon cutting, Lamb House is able to see that no one goes hungry. Again we thank you for your continuing support. Our coupon amounts are holding steady at about $850 to $1,000 per month! What a blessing! God bless each of you, The Lamb House Board of Directors Pat Woodward, Manager Be sure to bring your grocery coupons to church and drop them off in the box outside the church office. Then join our coupon cutters on Tuesday mornings at 11 a.m. to trim and sort your coupons. Thanks for supporting this community project. You make a big difference in a lot of lives! Welcome to our new pianist! Fran Watley and her husband, John, moved from southern California almost two years ago to retire at the lake. Fran comes from a family of ministers and musicians and has played the piano all her life. Fran and John have been married 12 years and have 7 kids between them. John has a 1921 Ford Model T that is his baby and Fran enjoys shopping at the outlet mall and volunteering at Community for Christ. We are so happy to have Fran here at West Lake to play for our 10:30 worship service. Church Directory Additions Please make note of these additions and changes. New Member: Louise Bailey B Trevino Rd. Laurie, MO Have you met our newest member? Louise Bailey joined West Lake Christian Church on Sunday, May 25 during the early service. Louise joined WLCC in 1993 and along with her husband, Bob Allinson, they did a lot of work on building Loehr Center. After his tragic death, she remarried and she and Harold Bailey participated a lot in our church. In 2000, they moved to a small town near Joplin. After Harold s death, Louise moved back to the lake area in the fall of Louise likes to square dance, quilt, read and travel. She is a winter Texan, so this fall she will be heading south to a warmer climate for a few months. Louise has two sons and five grandchildren. Be sure to introduce yourself to our newest member of West Lake Christian Church. Address Change: Leo & Cheryl Sander 116 Hidden Bluff Circle Brumley, MO Directory additions and corrections are an ongoing item in the newsletter. Please be sure to make the additions and corrections in your directory so that you will always have the most current information at your fingertips. Thank you! Sandy White Page 4

5 The Chi Rho Kids will be taking signatures on 2x4s and donations for Camden County Habitat for Humanity on Sunday, July 6. What a better way to celebrate Independence Day weekend and Grace Sunday! Make sure your name and prayers are added to the boards that will help build a house for a special family. July meetings will be on the 6th and 20th. On the 20th we will have a swim party at the Caldwell s home. Make sure to bring your swimsuit, towel, life jacket and any water toys you wish to share. If you bring a friend, we must have a medical release form signed ahead of time to be able to leave the church property. We will return to church at 3:30. If you have questions, call Kelly or Nancy at Remember Kids, Vacation Bible School will be the week of July at Lake West Christian Academy in Sunrise Beach. If you plan to attend or want to help, call the church office or Carroll Rinker at Share your talents A talent is worth only what you do with it. Imagine your talent as a plain bar of iron that s worth about $5. That same bar of iron, when made into horseshoes would be worth more than $10. If made into needles, it would be worth around $3,500. And if turned into balance springs for watches, its worth would become over $250,000! What is your talent, and how are you using it? From Our Parish Nurse Betty Greenley LRHS Parish Nurse Network Wellness Tip of the Month Coronary Artery Disease Coronary Artery Disease (CAD), is the most common type of heart disease. It is the leading cause of death in the U.S. for both men and women. CAD occurs when the arteries that supply blood to the heart muscle become hardened and narrowed. This is due to the buildup of cholesterol and other materials, called plaque, on the inner wall of the arteries. As buildup grows, less blood can flow through the arteries and the heart muscle will not receive the necessary blood and oxygen it must have to function properly. This can lead to chest pain (angina) or heart attack. Most heart attacks happen when a blood clot suddenly cuts off the heart s blood supply. Over time, CAD can weaken the heart muscle and contribute to heart failure, arrhythmias and other heart problems. Heart failure occurs when the heart can t pump enough blood to the rest of the body. Arrhythmias are changes in the normal rhythm beat of the heart. Cholesterol is a waxy substance the body needs to protect nerves, make cell tissues, and produce certain hormones. Cholesterol is needed for good health. A healthy liver makes all the cholesterol the body needs. Cholesterol is also found in most of the fatty foods we eat such as meat, dairy, and egg products. An excessive amount of cholesterol in the blood can raise the risk of having CAD. Extra cholesterol, called plaque, is stored in the arteries, a condition called atherosclerosis. Plaque causes arteries to narrow and harden. Large deposits of plaque can completely block an artery. When a coronary artery becomes completely blocked, a heart attack occurs. A total cholesterol level less than 200 is ideal, 200 to 239 is borderline high, and a level over 240 leads to an increased risk for CAD. Two types of cholesterol, high-density lipoproteins (HDL) and low-density lipoproteins (LDL), flow through the bloodstream. LDL delivers cholesterol to the body, HDL removes cholesterol from the bloodstream. Too much LDL cholesterol is bad, but a high level of HDL is good. When a total cholesterol level is high due to a high LDL there is an increased risk for CAD. When there is a high HDL level the risk is far less. A very good LDL is below 100, 100 to 129 can be acceptable, 130 to 159 is borderline high, 160 and higher produces a significant higher risk for CAD. The HDL is best when above 60, levels of 40 and below increases the risk for CAD. Annual cholesterol checks are suggested once a male reaches 35 years of age, and a female reaches 45. When levels are above normal, and other risk factors are present, checks are needed more often. Page 7
