1 The Disciple A Monthly Publication of St. Jude's Church The Episcopal Diocese of South Carolina "A warm, inviting, diverse Christian community intent on the nourishment of its members and as servants of our Lord Jesus Christ, dedicated to reaching out to its neighbors in need 907 Wichman Street Walterboro, S.C The Rev. Bob Horowitz, Rector stjudes@lowcountry.com online: (843) May 2017 The recently consecrated bishop parked his car outside the old downtown church, paused for a moment as though reconsidering his next move, and then briskly climbed the four steps onto the simple but sunny verandah. On a bench near the front door sat a gray-haired prie st, seemingly in silent meditation. The bishop approa c hed him slowly, carefully studying his he avily-lined features, clasped hands and closed eyes a s though determining whether or not he recognized him. The bishop said quietly "Father, may I sit with you a while?" The old man opened his eyes and looked up at the unfamiliar face and large cross worn by the bishop; his tired but keen eyes were puzzle d yet polite. He smiled and motioned for the bishop to sit beside him. "Forgive my intrusion," the bishop said. "But I have a story I must tell you." The old priest nodded quietly and waited. The bishop began: "Quite some time ago a small group of boiste rous young punks, fresh from an afternoon's drinking session, walked past a little church. One of them drew the attention of his companions to a notice on the door that listed times of confession. Amid raucous laughter, he suggested: "Why don't we have a bit of fun. Let's make a list of the worst sins we can think of and then draw lots to see who should go in and confess them. It'll be cool to see how the poor old priest reacts." "I've got a better idea", jeered a companion. "Seeing that it's your idea, why don't you put your money where your mouth is. I bet you $20 that you don't have the guts to do it." The young man tensed but rose to the challenge. "Fine, let's get working on the sin sheet." It wasn't long before the man emerged from the church waving a slip of paper. "We ll, I've won the bet," he said. "And, here's the proof I've been to a confession. It's my penance handed to me by the priest himself." "What did he say?" the others asked. "He didn't say anything, just handed me the piece of paper." "Well", said one, "have you done your penance?" "Don't be an idiot. I don't go for that nonsense." "Then I don't pay you the $20. No penance, no confession", said his challe nge r. So the young man went back into the church and read the slip of pa pe r: Kneel before the crucifix at the altar and repeat ten times: All this you did for me and I don't give a damn. No big deal, he thought. So he made his way to the altar, knelt down, looked at the nailed hands and feet and infinite sadness in the eyes. Then read the words below: "Father, forgive them for they know not what they do." He began his penance: "All this you did for me and I don't give a damn " About a half hour later his friends were impatient and went into the church to find out where he was. They found him at the altar rail sobbing profusely. "Well, that's the story," said the bishop. "Except for two things, I was that young man and you were the priest." I love this little story because it illustrates so much of the Christian life. The condition of all pe ople: the need for repentance and the forgiveness of sins. The role of the church to speak the truth and act as a conduit of God's re de e ming grace. The transforming love of Jesus Christ. The giving of one's self in service to Christ for all he has done for them. A resurre ction life. The sharing of a faith story. An expression of gratitude for a new heart and life. God's trustworthy yet sometimes mysterious ways. The Lord is risen, indeed! Hallelujah! Bob+
2 MUSIC NOTES Thank you to all singers for the Lent and Easter service music! Adult Choir rehearsals will continue through Wednesday, May 24 from 6-7pm. THE FISH AND THE FALLS By Max Lucado Long ago when there was no time and rivers had no names there was a fish. The young trout played all day in the calm pool of water created by a log. On occasion he would jump over the log and swim back and forth in the rapids. At night while the other fish were content to sleep the young trout lay with his eyes open and asked questions: What is the source of this river? Where does it go? Why is it here? Why am I here? He listened for an answer to his questions. Then one night he heard the roar. The sound had always been there but for the first time he really heard it. It was the roar that rumbled the river and vibrated the water. The young trout wondered: Who is the maker of this rumble? Who is the giver of this sound? He had to know and so he swam all night and the roar grew louder. As it grew louder the sound was frightening yet also compelled him to keep going. He swam until he was so tired he could swim no more and then he fell into a deep sleep. When he woke up the sun was out and he could see a huge waterfall. The water from on high crashed down into the river in huge piles of great white foam. He thought "I have never seen anything like this - I will climb the waterfall." So he went to the bottom of the falls and began to swim upward. He swam with all his might over and over again but the waterfall was too powerful. The next day he decided to leap to the top of the waterfall. He swam as deep as he could and then burst through the river into the air. He felt like he had soared almost to the top but in fact came nowhere near the top and fell back each time. Once again he fell asleep exhausted. He became very discouraged to realize his dream could not become reality. He wondered if all his effort was worth it and he wondered if the other fish The ones who never sought after the roar were happier. He considered returning to where he came from and to let the current carry him home. But how do you no longer hear the roar once you've heard it? How can you live without a purpose once you have lived with a purpose? How can you simply give up the yearning or desire of your heart? The fish was out of ideas and didn't know what to do and he became angry at the waterfall. He screamed at it: Why are you so harsh? Why are you so resistant? Can't you see that I can't do this on my own? Why don't you help me? I need you to help me! Just then the water at the base of the waterfall began to be still. He began to feel the push of the current only this time it was behind him. It started slowly and then gained momentum until it lifted the fish upwards towards the top of the waterfall. The fish began to ride the wave of grace that lifted him into the presence of the roar. What he couldn't do the wave of grace had done. 2
