Beginning February 7 th, David Chapel will be fasting and praying as a congregation seeking God s direction and growing closer to Him. Instead of requiring a specific fast, Pastor Parker asks that our members decide how they will fast individually or as a family. Biblical fasting is a normal part of a person s relationship with God. When you sacrificially eliminate food from your diet for a number of days, your spirit becomes uncluttered by the things of this world and amazingly sensitive to the things of God. Pastor Parker has prepared three resources to guide your fast. They can be found on the DC website. Paper copies are available in the foyer. Seven Basic Steps to Successful Fasting and Prayer 1. Set your objective 2. Make your commitment 3. Prepare yourself spiritually 4. Prepare yourself physically 5. Put yourself on a schedule 6. End your fast gradually 7. Expect results If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land. Now my eyes will be open and my ears attentive to the prayers offered in this place. (2 Chronicles 7:14-15) Start the new year with a fast. Benjamin Franklin said, Beware of little expenses; a small leak will sink a great ship. Does this describe your finances? More often than not, budgets are wrecked or debt is accumulated by little things. Sure, those big surprise expenses also strain our finances, but we can probably attribute smaller, sneaky expenses for doing the real damage. Here are the most common financial leaks and how to prevent them: Food Americans spend a lot of money on food over $3,000 every year just to eat out! With the addition of the cost of groceries, we spend well over $6,000 on food every year, totaling about 12 percent of our overall budgets. Entertainment & Sports A new study conducted by CreditCards.com reveals that over the past year, Americans spent $56 billion on sporting events, $33 billion on sports equipment, and $19 billion on gym memberships; totaling $100 billion total on sports alone. Transportation Transportation takes up a surprising amount of money in your budget about $8,500 a year, or 17 percent of your overall expenses. The Young Adult/College Ministry would like to show love to the Platinum Plus members (65+) throughout the month of February by running an errand, bringing lunch, painting nails, etc. directly following service. Interested and need help with a single task? Sign up in the fellowship hall on Sunday, February 3rd. Due to time constraints, this will be the only day to sign up. 8 MISSION I FOCUSES ON HOLIDAY SERVICE Mission I closed out 2018 with a celebration of fourth quarter birthdays and the kick-off of their third year of giving holiday gift baskets to their members who are sick and homebound. This year, there were a total of fourteen handmade gift baskets designed with great thought and care for each recipient. These pictures commemorate the delivery of those baskets. 8

Harris, Jr. will begin serving as David Chapel s new Social Media Coordinator/Brand Ambassador. In this role, he will be responsible for the development of consistent and quality content while managing DC s social media platforms and website. Bro. Harris -- a native of Philadelphia -- is an experienced journalist, having graduated from Mansfield University (Mansfield, Pennsylvania) in 1980 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. His professional career includes writing, editing and news/sports broadcasting. He has worked for ESPN the Undefeated, the Austin American- Statesman, Hunt Scanlon Media, Youngstown Vindicator, Pittsburgh Tribune Review, Toledo Blade, Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Booth Newspapers, and Tampa Bay Times. He is married to David Chapel member Yulanda McCarty-Harris. They have two sons, Miles and Langston, and a daughter, Courtney Rose Dantus. 9

10 Highlighting Adult Member Accomplishments Congratulations to Michael Jordan, David Chapel's Minister of Music, Worship and Fine Arts, who served as a presenter and panelist at the January 2019 annual Calvin Symposium on Worship in Grand Rapids, Michigan. It is an annual three-day conference sponsored by the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship and the Center for Excellence in Preaching at the Calvin Theological Seminary. The conference brings together a wide audience of artists, musicians, pastors, scholars, students, worship leaders and planners, and other interested worshipers. People come from around the world for a time of fellowship, worship, and learning together, seeking to develop their gifts, encourage each other and renew their commitment to the full ministry of the church. Race Date: February 17, :00 AM to 3:00 PM The 2019 Ascension Seton Austin Marathon, Half Marathon, and 5K presented by Under Armour will fill Austin s streets with more than 20,000 runners on Feb 17, This event will involve road closures that may impact your travel to church. The Austin Marathon uses a rolling course closure to minimize the impact on traffic. The City of Austin will shut down all roads along the course by 5:30 AM on race day to ensure the course is ready for runners. Course crossings at major intersections will remain open until just before the first runner arrives. These intersections will be remain closed while runners are present and will reopen following the final runner. Organizers have developed a traffic guide designed to minimize any travel inconveniences caused by the marathon. This guide is available online at Please take time to review and ensure you arrive at church on time and with minimal frustration. 10

15 Black History Month 2019 Special Programs KLRU broadcasts programming created by and about people from all cultures year-round, from public affairs to history to independent film to kids programming. In celebration of Black History Month, KLRU will feature additional programs and events exploring African American culture. Part cultural critique, part talk show and part history lesson, SAY IT LOUD will explore Black American culture and its impact on broader communities and trends. Melanie Jones is a womanist ethicist, millennial preacher, and intellectual activist. As an emergent scholar in theological education advocating for social transformation in the church, classroom, and global community, Jones was quickly recruited to serve on the BRSG executive board. In her role as the BRSG director of social media and public outreach, she has poised herself as a leading millennial voice with a global public platform teaching in lecture halls and preaching in pulpits across the globe and traveling to cities in North America, Australia, the Bahamas, Bermuda, Ghana, New Zealand, and the United Arab Emirates. Her extensive teaching experience ranges from undergraduate teaching to graduate and seminary teaching in both faceto-face and online courses in humanities, theology, ethics, gender/sexuality studies and writing. She is a third-generation Baptist preacher and the youngest ordained clergywoman at South Suburban Missionary Baptist Church in Harvey, IL, where she serves as associate minister and leads the women s ministry. Currently, she is a Doctor of Philosophy candidate at Chicago Theological Seminary.
