Helping people and communities discover the intentional spiritual life.

Wherever you are in your faith journey, the Institute for Christian Spirituality (ICS) can help enrich your walk with Jesus in everyday life. From certificate spirituality programs and a Doctor of Ministry degree, to the annual Nurture conference and other unique offerings, we are here to help individuals from all walks of life deepen their relationship with God and to live out His story in the world. The Institute for Christian Spirituality advocates life rooted in spiritual practices which empower missional living, letting the Spirit transform the hearts of disciples and communities who want to deepen their spiritual journey and formation in Christ. Our offerings teach you to cultivate what you learn into a more faithful, purposeful life of service in the Kingdom.

Sharing through Seminars Faith often grows when we share the learning journey with others. ICS hosts several conferences, workshops and programs where individuals share and deepen their spiritual discoveries in community. The annual spring Nurture conference at Lipscomb University features nationally recognized leaders in spiritual formation in a free, two-day event featuring keynote addresses, workshops and a luncheon. At Lipscomb s Summer Celebration, we have created Learning Labs that focus on current spiritual issues in a series of special classes. Leading through Academics ICS researches effective methods in Christian formation and equips students to do the same. The university campus provides a rich context to advance learning in the field and to nurture future leaders in ministry. Doctor of Ministry ICS offers a Doctor of Ministry degree in partnership with the Hazelip School of Theology at Lipscomb. The 36-hour D.Min. in missional and spiritual formation prepares students to live missionally in the world, focusing on spiritual formation as the primary tool for leading. Students are provided the training to equip those under their spiritual care to fully participate in God s purposes for creation. Research in Spiritual Formation The institute also develops meaningful tools that measure the effectiveness of spiritual growth models. ICS faculty engage recognized scholars and other leaders in the field and share those insights in all of our offerings, helping you to benefit from international expertise on Christian spirituality. We welcome Christian educators to our annual fall Formatio seminar, created specifically for those who teach Bible or religion in Christian schools as well as campus administrators. Other special events throughout the year offer more opportunities to explore spiritual formation practices, discuss current trends, and share successes and challenges through meaningful conversations. Residential Programs If you want to explore spiritual practices and learn how to build them into your daily activities, the Institute offers the 12-month program Growing Deeper. This is a great introduction to spiritual formation techniques that includes two residential retreats, helpful readings, and ongoing conversations with an assigned mentor. If you want to develop greater skills as a spiritual director, ICS offers an 18-month residential program in spiritual direction that prepares individuals for the ministry of one-on-one spiritual companionship. The program provides directed readings, contact with a spiritual mentor, two residential retreats with other participants and staff, integrative response papers, and a supervised internship in spiritual direction.

Serving in Churches Church ministry is complex and challenging. It can be difficult to pursue meaningful spiritual formation in the midst of so many other congregational programs. The institute can help you navigate the priorities specific to your context. Consultation Work ICS can help you face these challenges with faith and optimism. The institute provides one-on-one consultation and solution-oriented resources that help address the transformative work of the Spirit as a congregational process. It might be as simple as a suggested book, a small group discussion or perhaps a more planned workshop for church leaders. Whatever the issues, ICS can be a part of transforming challenges into more effective ministry opportunities. Training for Ministers The institute offers a special residency program exclusively for ministers called Spiritual Deepening. Over the course of 18 months and two residencies, ministers are better equipped to handle the daily rigors of ministry by enriching their own faith journeys with spiritual practices. Transforming the Workplace Christ-like values are as needed in the business community as they are in any other aspect of life. Yet many leaders and professionals are still trying to figure out how their faith relates to their profession and, more importantly, how their faith can lead their profession. Because ICS believes that doing business is a means of doing Christ s work in the world, we offer a range of workshops that equip and support leaders with guidance for spiritual awareness of themselves and those they influence. Sharing in Christ The Institute for Christian Spirituality is eager to share knowledge, experiences and resources with you. ICS faculty welcomes conversation about your spiritual journey and can consult with you according to your needs. Follow us on the web and Facebook to hear about upcoming events. We look forward to talking with you.

Institute for Christian Spirituality One University Park Drive Nashville, TN For more information or to apply, visit ics.lipscomb.edu Our History The Center for Spiritual Renewal began in 1989 under the direction of Dr. Carl McKelvey. It was his dream to provide a place of spiritual renewal for weary believers, particularly preachers and elders. From that early work and commitment the Institute for Christian Spirituality was created in 2009, enhancing the ministry of the center by further developing offerings focused on renewal through prayer, study and other spiritual practices. Our Mission The Institute for Christian Spirituality nurtures the personal discipleship of Christ followers by cultivating a deeper awareness and participation in the Holy Spirit s redemptive activity among us within us and through us in the world. We pursue this mission by exploring spiritually forming practices and facilitating the journey with others through spiritual friendships and spiritual direction. Institute Faculty Earl Lavender is the executive director of ICS. He teaches classes in missions, spiritual formation and faith and culture. He currently serves as the director of missional studies. He completed his B.S. and M.A. at Lipscomb and his Ph.D. at St. Louis University. Earl has ministered in Italy, Illinois and Tennessee. Jackie L. Halstead is the associate director of ICS and associate professor of spiritual formation. She holds certificates from Shalem Institute in Spiritual Guidance and Leading Contemplative Prayer Groups and Retreats. He completed his B.A. at Ohio Valley University and his M.Ed. and M.T.S. at Lipscomb. Frank has ministered at two different congregations in Middle Tennessee, focusing on the spiritual development of adult members. Rhonda Lowry is a senior fellow at ICS. She completed her M.Div. degree and taught at Fuller Theological Seminary and Pepperdine University. Rhonda is a frequent speaker nationwide in programs dedicated to enabling Christians to know Jesus deeply and to serve Him in the everyday places of their lives. Carl McKelvey is a senior fellow at ICS. Holding degrees from Lipscomb, Scaritt College, and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Carl served 32 years as the executive vice president of administration at Lipscomb. He retired in 2002 and is currently the director of the Center for Spiritual Renewal at Longview Mansion. John York is the director of Lipscomb s Doctor of Ministry program and teaches preaching and New Testament text classes. He received his training from Abilene Christian University (B.A., M.A., M.Div.) and Emory University (Ph.D., 1989). Prior to joining the Lipscomb faculty, John served in full time ministry with congregations in Oregon, Texas and Tennessee.

The Doctor of Ministry at Lipscomb University Training for formational ministry. ICS offers a Doctor of Ministry degree in partnership with the Hazelip School of Theology at Lipscomb. The 36-hour D.Min. in Missional and Spiritual Formation is designed to equip all followers of Christ who seek to be spiritually formed, to live missionally in the world and be a part of transforming the hearts of disciples and communities who want to deepen their spiritual journey and formation in Christ. The Doctor of Ministry degree is distinguished from academic doctorates such as the Ph.D. in that it focuses on the practice of ministry. This program will equip you to better shape the spirituality and mission of those under your care. Through biblical, historical and theological study, you will be led to a deeper personal spirituality, greater vision for God s mission through the church to the contemporary world, and a more focused understanding of God s intent for your work. Take an important step in your journey. Learn more or apply for admission to the Doctor of Ministry program by visiting ics.lipscomb.edu and clicking on Doctor of Ministry Degree. Nationally Accredited The D.Min. degree is offered through Lipscomb University s Hazelip School of Theology, a member of the Association of Theological Schools (ATS). ATS is the preeminent accrediting body for graduate theological education in the United States. Program Design The program involves 36 credit hours of courses, which are divided into three categories: core classes (28 hours), research courses (2 hours) and a final ministry project (6 hours). Courses involve four, two-week residencies (two each year), usually on Lipscomb s campus. They normally occur in July and February. At least two months prior to the residency, course syllabi will be made available. These will contain assignments related to one s particular ministry, to be completed prior to the residency. Each three-hour course includes a postresidency where course content is integrated into one s ministry for evaluation. The classes will involve peer learning and critique leading to the self-directed research required by each unit of study, culminating in a final research project. Students remain with the same cohort throughout the program. Students also participate in a spiritual formation retreat during the weekend of each two-week residency. These are held at the Scarritt Bennett Center in Nashville. Our Mission The Institute for Christian Spirituality nurtures the personal discipleship of Christ followers by cultivating a deeper awareness and participation in the Holy Spirit s redemptive activity among us, within us and through us in the world. We pursue this mission by exploring spiritually forming practices and facilitating the journey with others through spiritual friendships and spiritual direction.

The residential retreats offer a welcoming, prayerful experience with those who seek a deeper walk with God. They include lectures, dialogues, group sessions, silent retreat times, spiritual practices and fellowship with other seekers. What is asked Write a spiritual autobiography. Commit to regular spiritual practices. Reflect on your readings. Contact your mentor as scheduled. Meet monthly for prayer with a spiritual community where you live.
