Beginning February 8 th, David Chapel will be fasting and praying as a congregation seeking God s direction and growing closer to Him. Instead of requiring a specific fast, Pastor Parker asks that our members decide how they will fast individually or as a family. Biblical fasting is a normal part of a person s relationship with God. When you sacrificially eliminate food from your diet for a number of days, your spirit becomes uncluttered by the things of this world and amazingly sensitive to the things of God. Pastor Parker has prepared three resources to guide your fast. They can be found on the DC website. Paper copies are available in the foyer. Seven Basic Steps to Successful Fasting and Prayer 1. Set your objective 2. Make your commitment 3. Prepare yourself spiritually 4. Prepare yourself physically 5. Put yourself on a schedule 6. End your fast gradually 7. Expect results If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land. Now my eyes will be open and my ears attentive to the prayers offered in this place. (2 Chronicles 7:14-15) Start the new year with a fast. Race Date: February 18, :00 AM to 3:00 PM The 27t h Anniversary of The Austin Marathon, Half Marathon, and 5K will fill Austin s streets with over 17,000 runner. This event will involve road closures that may impact your travel to church. The Austin Marathon uses a rolling course closure to minimize the impact on traffic. The City of Austin will shut down all roads along the course by 6 AM on race day to ensure the course is ready for runners. Course crossings at major intersections will remain open until just before the first runner arrives. These intersections will be remain closed while runners are present and will reopen following the final runner. Organizers have developed a traffic guide designed to minimize any travel inconveniences caused by the marathon. This guide is available online at Please take time to review and ensure you arrive at church on time and with minimal frustration. 5

11 Au Each February, Seminary of the Southwest pauses to reflect on the history and celebrate the culture of African-Americans in our society and abroad. Through a series of lectures, guest preachers, art displays and moderated conversations, Black History Month at Seminary of the Southwest hopes to be place where people from various backgrounds and perspectives can gather to learn and celebrate fellowship. Englewood Review of Books called the work a theological masterpiece. Jennings is nearing completion of a popular commentary on the Book of Acts, titled Acts: A Commentary, The Revolution of the Intimate (for the Belief Series, Westminster/John Knox). Writing in the areas of liberation theologies, cultural identities, and anthropology, Jennings has authored more than 40 scholarly essays and nearly two-dozen reviews, as well as essays on academic administration and blog posts for Religion Dispatches. Jennings is an ordained Baptist minister and has served as interim pastor for several North Carolina churches. He is in high demand as a speaker and is widely recognized as a major figure in theological education across North America. A Calvin College graduate, Jennings received his M.Div. from Fuller Theological Seminary and his Ph.D. in religion and ethics from Duke. Clearing Stones and Sowing Seeds: Photographs from the Travis County Negro Extension Service In honor of African American History Month, the Austin History Center invites you to the opening of its newest exhibit Clearing Stones and Sowing Seeds: Photographs from the Travis County Negro Extension Service. The opening reception will be held at the Austin History Center (810 Guadalupe Street, Austin) on Tuesday, February 6, 2018 at 6:30 p.m. and feature a pie social. The exhibit presents selections from the Travis County Negro Extension Service Photography Collection (AR ) archived at the History Center. The photographs, taken between 1940 and 1964, document the variety of services and educational programs offered by the Extension Service, including animal husbandry, crafts, domestic education, gardening and agriculture as well as home improvement. The exhibit will be on display from February 6 through April
