1 Monthly Announcements October 2017 The DC Pulse Your Connection to an Intergenerational Church with a Heart for the Community I t s official! Pastor Joseph C. Parker, Jr., Esq., D. Min. is now a bona fide, card-carrying senior adult. This important milestone was recognized and commemorated on September 9 th during the Lake Austin jazz dinner cruise hosted by the Senior Adult Ministry, a.k.a. Platinum Plus, on the occasion of their Annual Weekend celebration. Pastor Parker proudly accepted a certificate and an official royal purple and silver accented Platinum Plus t-shirt signifying his status as a full-fledged member of the Senior Adult Ministry with all the inherent rights, privileges, and responsibilities. P astor Parker reminded those in attendance that he instituted the Senior Adult Ministry shortly after he became Pastor. It could be that he, always a visionary, foresaw such a time as this when he himself would become a proud and deserving member of Platinum Plus. Article by Joyce L. Harris Congratulations, Pastor Parker, and welcome aboard!

9 AUSTIN INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT The Austin Independent School District is planning a $1,050,984,000 bond proposal for the November 7 th election. According to AISD, the bond would bring 21 st century learning spaces to students, without increasing the tax rate. The district is having several upcoming open houses for the community to learn more about the 2017 bond. The meetings are from 5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. on the following dates: October 3 rd -- Austin High School cafeteria October 5 th -- Crockett ECHS cafeteria October 10 th -- LBJ ECHS cafeteria October 12 th -- Reagan ECHS cafeteria On October 21, 2017, a meeting will also be held at the AISD Carruth Administration Center Board Room from 11:00 a.m. 1:00 p.m. Please try to attend at least one meeting. The full bond book can be accessed at default/files/dept/bond/factsheets/ AISD_2017_Bond_Book_ pdf. As former students and graduates of the Original L. C. Anderson High School, we have submitted communications to the district for the utilization of the old Anderson High School building located at 900 Thompson Street in East Austin. Specifically, we have requested: a historical designation, recorded as a Texas Historical Landmark; museum/gallery to share old L.C. Anderson history; dedicated space for a Yellow Jacket Conference Center for community and educational use i.e. meetings, cultural events, Afterschool Centers on Education programs; changing the address to 900 Thompson Street; preservation of historical elements of the facility. i.e. front of the building; and the stadium named Yellow Jacket Stadium and the colors black and gold. The Original L. C. Anderson will be re-purposed, receive full modernization and continue academic excellence by moving Eastside Memorial to the Old Anderson site where the building will be fully utilized and offer continued diverse and equitable programs. We are asking you to make sure you vote. Don t stay away from the polls. YOUR VOTE DOES COUNT! Regardless of how you feel about the bond package, please go to the polls and vote. It has been stated that the people in East Austin do not go the polls and vote. Let us change this perception of the citizens of East Austin. Please VOTE! Submitted by Nancy Thompson Early voting is October 23 - Nov. 3. Election Day is November 7 th. 9
10 Engage, educate and empower young people to prevent and end abusive relationships. Each month, DC will highlight a few of the common types of abuse so you can better identify them. Experiencing even one or two of these warning signs in a relationship is a red flag that abuse may be present. Remember, each type of abuse is serious and no one deserves to experience abuse of any kind. Digital dating abuse is the use of technologies such as texting and social networking to bully, harass, stalk or intimidate a partner. Often this behavior is a form of verbal or emotional abuse perpetrated online. In a healthy relationship, all communication is respectful whether in person, online or by phone. It is never okay for someone to do or say anything that makes you feel bad, lowers your self-esteem or manipulates you. You may be experiencing digital abuse if your partner: Tells you who you can or can t be friends with on Facebook and other sites. Sends you negative, insulting or even threatening s, Facebook messages, tweets, DMs or other messages online. Uses sites like Facebook, Twitter, foursquare and others to keep constant tabs on you. Puts you down in their status updates. Sends you unwanted, explicit pictures and/or demands you send some in return. Pressures you to send explicit video or sexts. Steals or insists on being given your passwords. Constantly texts you and makes you feel like you can t be separated from your phone for fear that you will be punished. Looks through your phone frequently, checks up on your pictures, texts and outgoing calls. Tags you unkindly in pictures on Instagram, Tumblr, etc. Uses any kind of technology (such as spyware or GPS in a car or on a phone) to monitor you You never deserve to be mistreated, online or off. If you re experiencing digital dating abuse, we encourage you to chat with a peer advocate. It is okay to turn off your phone. You have the right to be alone and spend time with friends and family without your partner getting angry. You do not have to text any pictures or statements that you are uncomfortable sending, especially nude or partially nude photos, known as sexting. You lose control of any electronic message once your partner receives it. They may forward it, so don t send anything you fear could be seen by others. Be mindful when using check-ins like Facebook Places and foursquare. Letting an abusive partner know where you are could be dangerous. Also, always ask your friends if it s okay for you to check them in. You never know if they are trying to keep their location secret. 10
