2 Monday, February 2 (continued) 6:00 p.m. Perkins Distinguished Alumni Awards Prothro Great Hall (Doors open at 5:40 p.m. Pre-registration required) The Rev. Dr. James V. Lyles and the Rev. Ted J. Dotts, Jr. have been named 2015 Distinguished Alumni Award recipients by the Alumni/ae Council of Perkins School of Theology. This annual award recognizes Perkins graduates who have demonstrated effectiveness and integrity in service to the church, continuing support and involvement in the goals of Perkins School of Theology and SMU, distinguished service in the wider community, and exemplary character. Dr. Lyles earned the Master of Theology degree from Perkins School of Theology in With four fellow students John Wesley Elliott, Arthur Hawkins, Negail Rudolph Riley, and Cecil Williams Lyles helped Perkins School of Theology lead the way in the desegregation of the University as the five became the first African Americans to be admitted as degree candidates and to graduate from SMU. Rev. Dotts earned the Master of Theology degree from Perkins School of Theology in He has served in positions as varied as church pastor and district superintendent, medical ethicist and hospital administrator, and an elected delegate to four consecutive UMC General Conferences. He presented lectures in medical ethics at the School of Medicine and the School of Law, Texas Tech University, and was named senior vice president of Ethics and Faith for Covenant Health System. Roberta Schaafsma, director and J.S. Bridwell Endowed Librarian, along with Timothy Binkley, archivist, will also make a brief presentation regarding the public release of the Albert Cook Outler archives at SMU. 3

Tonya Burton, director of Youth Ministry Education and a spiritual formation facilitator at Perkins, will lead the gathering in a pre-lecture meditative experience. 11:30 Seminary Worship Perkins Chapel with Bishop Joel Martinez The United Methodist Church Bishop Martinez was elected to the episcopacy in 1992 after serving more than 30 years in the Rio Grande Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church. An alumnus of Perkins School of Theology, he served as bishop in the Nebraska and San Antonio Areas. He also chaired the denomination s National Plan for Hispanic Ministry and served as president of its General Board of Global Ministries. He is currently working with his spouse, the Rev. Raquel Mora Martinez, to develop liturgical and historical resources for the church. 5

In addition to the exhibition of The Albert Cook Outler Papers in Bridwell Library s Elizabeth Perkins Prothro Galleries, an exhibit remembering Dr. Edwin Sylvest, Professor Emeritus of Church History at Perkins School of Theology, will be on display in the Gill Room. Dr. Sylvest passed away on December 21, He was in the first class of graduate students admitted to the Graduate Program in Religious Studies at SMU and went on to teach church history, including groundbreaking courses in Spanish and English on topics including Mariology. He also served as an interim director of the school s Mexican American Program. He was a clergy member of the former Rio Grande Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church.
