We were honored by the presence of a number of dignitaries and special people. These included our chaplain Deacon Bob, our State Deputy Edward Castellaszzi, our Division Chairman, our Nassau Chapter President and District Deputies, our past Grand Knights and visiting Grand Knights, our Brother Knights, and our dear family and friends. A special thank you to those who helped to make this event a success. Another successful event was our Senior Citizens Picnic. About fifteen of our brother knights came out to help with this event. A special friend, Lou Danetti, provided us with music. Again, a special thank you to all of you. Finally, another event on our calendar was our council Social Night. Our guest speaker, PGK Ken Iadarola, gave a presentation on Basic First Aid. It covered many topics from rescue breathing to insect bites. Our thanks to Ken for coming down and providing us with much useful information. All of these events and the help and participation of our brother knights help our council grow and help make charity the main principle of the order. 2 Chantal Chatter October 2007 Page 3 From Our Chaplain Dear Brother Knights and Families, No one is too old to become a Knight. My 88 year old Father in law just took his 1 st degree. Nice going Dad! So don t let I m too old or any other excuses stop you from signing on new Knights. Please read on. The other day a youngster friend of mine asked me how I felt about being old. I was taken aback, for I do not think of myself at 60 as being old. Upon seeing my reaction, my friend was immediately embarrassed, but I explained that it was an interesting question, and I would pray on it, and let him know. Old Age I decided is a gift. I am now, probably, for the first time in my life, the person I have constantly striven to be. Oh, not my body! I sometime despair over this body, the pains, the wrinkles, the baggy eyes, and the sagging mid section. And often I am taken aback by that older person that lives in my mirror, but happily, I do not agonize over these things for long. I would never trade my amazing friends, my wonderful life, my loving family or my incredible grandchildren for more hair, less gray hair or a flatter tummy or all the money in the world. As I've aged, I've become kinder to myself, and less critical of myself. I have become my own friend and have intrinsically understood that God is my friend too. I don't chide myself for eating that extra cookie, or for not cleaning the attic or the garage, or for buying those silly flags that I didn't need, but looks so free and beautiful while flying in the breeze off of my front porch. I am entitled to a treat, I am entitled to be messy, to collect things that I may never use, to be extravagant, or to even be silly! I have seen too many friends and friends of friends leave this world too soon; before they understood the great freedom that comes with aging, the freedom of loving God, and being loved by God. Whose business is it if I choose to sit in my big recliner to read or watch TV until 4:00 AM and then sleep until whatever time? Who cares if I am not computer or savvy despite staying on the confounded machine to all times of the day or night trying to figure some silly little thing out? Chantal Chatter October 2007 Page 4 I am allowed to dance in the kitchen with my wife or all by myself to those wonderful tunes of the 60 s & 70's, and sing along even out of tune at the top of my lungs. And if I, at the same time, wish to weep over a lost love... I will. I will walk on the beach in a swim suit that does not quite hide my sagging belly, and will dive into the waves and body surf with abandon if I choose to, despite the pitying glances from the jet set They, too, will get old. I know I am sometimes forgetful. But then again, some of life is just as well forgotten. And, guess what, I eventually remember the important things anyhow. Sure, over the years my heart has been broken. How can your heart not break when you lose loved ones, or when a child suffers, or even when somebody loses a beloved pet? But broken hearts are what give us strength, understanding, and compassion. A heart never broken is pristine and sterile and will never know the joy of being imperfect. I am so blessed to have lived long enough to have my hair turn gray, and to have my youthful laughs be forever etched into deep grooves on my face. So many have never laughed and so many have died before their hair could turn grey or recede. As you get older, it is easier to be positive. You care less about what other people think. I don't question myself anymore. Guess what? I have even earned the right to be wrong. But I am right about one thing being a Knight, loving God and being loved by God it is never too late.
