1 November 2017 SFX Knights Newsletter St. Francis Xavier the Missionary Council # In Service to One, In Service to All Council Meetings held at St. Francis Xavier Parish Hall 2 nd and 4 th Tuesday 7:00 P.M Newtowne Neck Road, Compton, MD Brother Knights, Grand Knight s Report October has been a good month so far but we must remember to keep Brother John Henry Bond in our prayers. George Morgan has begun his Tootsie Roll campaign and I ask you all to please help him by taking a shift in front of Ace Hardware its only for a few hours. Our 25th Installation Ceremony was on 8 October. It was a very enjoyable afternoon: CrabKnockers served a delicious Southern Maryland Feast ; Big Jim Berned and Paul Zimmerman were guest speakers; and Bob Schaller and The GeeZers played our music after dinner. James Morgan was recognized as Knight of the Year. Big Jim Berned, Debi Berned and Jimmy Berned were recognized as Family of the Year. Thanks to everyone that helped set up, serve and cleanup, especially Jeannie Morgan, Laura Morgan, Courtney Morgan, Pam Howe, Debi Berned, and Claire Delozier. But I especially want to thank our CCD teens Haley Ashton, Campbell Earhart, and Lauren McLaughlin for giving up their Sunday afternoon to help the Knights with their affair.

2 On October 22 nd we had our Breakfast in support of Helpful Hooves. We had a great turnout. Bob Bowles, James Morgan, George Morgan, John Breck, Dale Rebarchick, Jonathan Lowe, Donovan Harrell, and Kyle Eyster were kept constantly busy by a steady stream of customers in fact we even had to go buy more food! I think we received more donations for this event than ever before. And finally Bob Bowles, Jim Howe and I attended the Star Gala on the 28th and received a beautiful plaque in recognition of our Council meeting 100% of its goals and that award is directly due to the hard work of all our Brother Knights well done! November will be another busy month please try and help when you can. Vivat Jesus! Fraternally, SK Mike Holton, Grand Knight Council #10957 Chaplain s Report Knights of Columbus Reflection November 2017 I ve always been struck by this saying of Our Lord in Matthew s Gospel: My yoke is easy, and my burden light (cf. Matthew 11:30). The metaphor of the yoke is a striking one. Imagine a wooden beam that is fastened over the necks of two beasts of burden, such as oxen. In Jesus day, the scribes and Pharisees were known for tying up heavy burdens and laying them on people s shoulders 600 regulations in all! But Jesus offers a lighter yoke, when He summarizes the law with these two commandments: Love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength and love your neighbor as yourself. The invitation to bear the yoke of Christ is a call to be in relationship with a Person and not a set of lofty ideas or ethical choices. And so we are called to hitch our lives under Jesus yoke and learn from His example. Although the two commandments to love God and neighbor sound simple, it doesn t mean they are always easy. Yet what Jesus offers is not meant to

3 burden us. It is meant to set us free. Love never imposes itself; it is a free choice and a gift. The Holy Spirit will give us the grace to carry that yoke and trust that God, who loves us more than we will ever know, is always there to help us carry every burden and lighten any load. The good news is that when we surrender to God, our lives become infinitely more joyful and lighter. We see this beautifully illustrated in the lives of the saints, like St. Therese of Liseux. Through their life of prayer, they came to know Jesus as the Best Friend they would ever have, a Friend who would ease all of their burdens. If you ve ever had to file papers, pull weeds or rake leaves for a whole day, you know that it can be quite tedious and wearisome when you have to do it by yourself. Or perhaps you know the difference a good friend can make when you have to take a long car drive. How it is that being alongside a good friend makes that same drive seem so much shorter? That once difficult task becomes a pleasant one and even joy-filled in the presence of a good friend. That s the difference that Christ can make in our lives. I remember how challenging it was to go back to school when I entered the seminary several years ago. I had been out of school for ten years and felt a little daunted by the prospect of doing research, writing papers, and studying for exams again. At times the yoke felt heavy. But all of that changed when I saw the example of one of my brother seminarians, who constantly made his work a prayer. He would always begin with a prayer and have an image of Our Lord with him wherever He studied. He even approached his studies with a spirit of joy. It was a great lesson for me. As I, too, began to approach my studies as an offering of love to God, I felt the burden become lighter. I realized I was not alone. It helped me to deepen my prayer life. The good news is that we can do the same with our work right now - whatever that might be. Invite God into all the duties that you have and make your work into a prayerful offering to Him, confident that He is always with you. The work will still be there, but the burden becomes lighter when offered out of love for God. We have a God who loves us so much that He doesn t want just one hour with us at Mass on Sunday. Like any good parent, He wants to be part of every hour and every day. Once that happens, we find that His yoke really is easy and His burden is truly light. SK Father Rob Maro Chaplin St. Francis Xavier Church News Looking ahead: The Olde Fashioned Christmas Bazaar, will be Saturday November 18, 2017, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Unusual and a variety of crafts in the Parish Hall and on the Grounds. Happy Birthday!! We would like to extend our Best Wishes to the following people who are celebrating their birthday this Month.
