August 2018 SFX Knights Newsletter St. Francis Xavier the Missionary Council # In Service to One, In Service to All Council Meetings held at St. Francis Xavier Parish Hall 2 nd and 4 th Tuesday 7:00 P.M Newtowne Neck Road, Compton, MD Grand Knight s Report August 2018 My Brother Knights, Well, it certainly was a fun potluck luncheon! We celebrated Fr Rob s one-year anniversary on the 15 th of July and once again, or should I say, as always, the food was great. The Knights provided fried chicken (Laura Morgan arranged for it) and drinks and our parishioners provided their usual delicious bounty. We must thank all those that pitched in to set up the hall and then clean up afterwards: George, James, John, Laura and Gennie Morgan, Mike DeManss, Don and Anitra McLeod, Bob Bowles, Mike Perraut, Herb Male, Dan Geary, Jonathan Lowe, Tom Koviak, Jim Muller, Donovan Harrel, Margo Holton, Conor Hardy and Jim Howe. More than a hundred parishioners shared the afternoon with Fr Rob. Now that Fr Rob has completed his first year here as our Administrator, Bishop Fisher will officially make him our pastor at an Installation Mass on Sunday, 16 September (at the 11:00 Mass). We ll help arrange for a light reception in the church hall following that Mass. Brothers, it s that time of the year again: George Morgan is running the car raffle program. George, we all thank you for that, but, brothers he needs help. Please, if you can spare an hour give George a call and volunteer for an hour or even two in front of Ace or maybe for 20 minutes after Mass.
Our Seminarian, Conor Hardy, will have become a First Degree Knight as of 24 July. Because of that our July business meeting was moved to the 31 st. We are in the dog days of summer now beware the sun and heat and may God bless us all. Fraternally, Vivat Jesus SK Mike Holton, Grand Knight Council #10957 Chaplain s Report Knights of Columbus Chaplain s Reflection August 2018 One of the great Old Testament figures we read about was King David. The Lord had anointed David, making him a great king over Israel. But his lust for another man s wife blinded him. David committed adultery with Uriah s wife, Bathsheba, and then sent Uriah into the front lines of battle to be killed. The Lord sent the prophet Nathan to make David aware of his sin, through a parable. David then admitted his sin and received the Lord s forgiveness. In the end, David was not afraid to admit he was wrong and ask for God s mercy. Sadly though, today many fear going to confession more than they fear sin itself. There s a story about a very successful coach from Georgia Southern University. About 14 years ago, Coach Russell brought the football team into the training room. He locked all the doors of the room so no one could get out. He had with him a farmer and a Georgia State Patrolman. The coach said: Tonight I m going to teach you something that you will never forget. The players were snickering and elbowing each other. Tonight I want to teach you what to be afraid of. The Georgia State Patrolman pulled out a plastic bag that was filled with a white powdery substance. The coach asked: How many you know what that is? The team all raised their hands and said: Yes, it s cocaine. How many of you are afraid of what s in that little plastic bag. The players snickered some more and were clearly not afraid.
Then a farmer rolled out a live six-foot rattlesnake and placed it on a long table. It woke up and started hissing at them. Suddenly there was pandemonium and the football players were running towards the doors Coach, don t let him get us! After the farmer returned the rattlesnake to its cage, the coach said, I d like to have your undivided attention. Then he explained to them that a minute.00 percent of people die from rattlesnake bites each year (chances are nearly zero, 1 in 50 million people die from snakebites) But thousands upon thousands die from illegal drugs every year. That is an unforgettable learning experience. If we don t know what to fear, that puts in a very dangerous situation. We need to know what to be afraid of. Sin is the only thing that can take us away from God. But we also need to know what not to be afraid of: and that s God s forgiveness and mercy in the sacrament of Reconciliation. The trouble is that many people don t fear sin but they do fear coming back to confession. This is one of the devil s greatest tricks. Some fear that the priest will judge them or scold them. We are not here to judge or reprimand you. We are here to be instruments of God s love and mercy. Others will say, What s the use of going to confession? All I do is confess the same sins again and again. And I love what Pope Francis has to say about that: Jesus never tires of forgiving us, we are the ones who tire of asking for His mercy. In his 1984 encyclical on Reconciliation and Penance, Pope St. John Paul II put it this way: But we know that God, "rich in mercy," like the father in the parable [of the Prodigal Son], does not close his heart to any of his children. He waits for them, looks for them, goes to meet them at the place where the refusal of communion imprisons them in isolation and division. He calls them to gather about his table in the joy of the feast of forgiveness and reconciliation (RP #10). See the new confession schedule on the next page. As a rule of thumb, I recommend monthly confession for venial (less serious) sins. If one knows they are in mortal sin, they should go to confession as soon as possible. For a sin to be mortal, there must be a grave violation of the Ten Commandments with full knowledge and full consent of the will. The Church teaches that if we have mortal sin on our souls, we should abstain from receiving Our Lord in the Eucharist until we have gone to confession. The reception of Holy Communion only forgives venial sins; the forgiveness of mortal sin only takes place in the sacrament of confession. One of my favorite Psalms of all time is Psalm 51. Some of you may be familiar with it. It begins: Have mercy on me, O God, and in your kindness blot out all my offenses. Thoroughly wash me from my guilt and cleanse me from my sin Perhaps what some might not know
about this Psalm is that it was written by King David after he committed adultery with Bathsheba and sent her husband Uriah into the front lines of battle to be killed. It is a beautiful psalm because it shows the heart of man who is truly sorry for his sin. But it also gives me great encouragement because even after all that, the Lord not only forgave David but in His divine plan saw to it that David s prayer of repentance would become part of the Sacred Scriptures. That s the transforming power of God s mercy! - Father Rob Maro St. Francis Xavier Church News: Looking ahead: Here at St. Francis Xavier, there will be a new confession schedule beginning on Saturday, September 1, Beginning on that date, confessions will be heard after the 4:00 p.m. Mass on Saturdays and before the two Masses on Sundays: 7:30 7:50 a.m. (before the 8:00 a.m. Mass) and 10:30 10:50 a.m. (before the 11:00 a.m. Mass). I hope these additional times will make it easier for everyone to participate in this wonderful sacrament of God s mercy as regular spiritual practice. CCD will start next month at the beginning of September. Congratulations to Father Rob as he is to be installed as our Parish Priest by Bishop Fisher, on September 16, after the 11:00 AM Mass, with a reception to follow in the Church Hall. 6 District Deputy s Report My Brothers Can you believe that a month has already gone by in this fraternal year? Now is the time to ask yourself the following Questions: Where am I now? What are my goals? Am I being realistic in the goals I ve set? What corrections if any need to be made. As you ve heard a thousand times that good planning and the execution of those plans equals success. If you need any help or advice, now is the time to ask. Your DD, State Officers, and Supreme are eager for your success. Tootsie rolls should arrive sometime in mid to late August. As soon as I receive them I ll get them out to the councils. Council growth happens in several ways, First; from expanding and enhancing your council and charitable events. The more visible your events, the more enjoyable your events, the more individuals will want to be part of them. Second is from bringing in new members that bring with them new ideas. And third, is by re-engaging with the missing members. Reach out to the gentlemen you recruited over the past years and see how they and their family are doing. Extend the fraternal welcome and see what happens. If you are one of the missing council members, comeback to see what and who is new. It is in giving that we receive. October will be here before you know it. Start making plans to attend the premier social event of the year for the Knights of Columbus, the Columbus Day Ball. You may even hear your name called as the winner of a new Ford Mustang. Talk it up in your council and get your reservation in before 1 Sept Vivat Jesus, SK Bob Bowles Knights of Columbus District Deputy Maryland District #3 Thank You, Thank You, Thank You For All That You Do!
Congratulations to Conor Hardy on becoming a Knight of Columbus On July 24, 2018, His support group was there. A large Thank You to Conor Hardy for spending his summer with us at St. Francis Xavier and helping Father Rob. We wish him all the best as he starts back in the Seminary. You will be in our prayers. Pray, pray a lot and offer sacrifices for sinners... I'm Our Lady of the Rosary. Only I will be able to help you....in the end My Immaculate Heart will triumph." Our Lady at Fatima The Sign of the Cross: In the name of the Father of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen
The Apostles' Creed: I believe in God the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day He arose again; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the Communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen The Our Father: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name: Thy kingdom come: Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread: and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation: but deliver us from evil. Amen. The Hail Mary: Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen Glory Be to the Father: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. The Fatima Prayer: "O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, and lead all souls to Heaven, especially those in most need of Your Mercy". The Hail, Holy Queen: Hail, holy Queen, Mother of Mercy! Our life, our sweetness, and our hope! To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve; to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley, of tears. Turn, then, most gracious Advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us; and after this our exile show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus; O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary. Pray for us o Mother of God, That we may be worthy of the promises of Christ.
