2 Footprints? Why the Name? St. Aidan, the man who our church is named after, was a famous walker. In general people walked a lot back then. Only important people had enough money to buy horses. One ruler gave St. Aidan a horse because he thought of him as an important man deserving of a more suitable transportation. St. Aidan gave the horse to the next poor man he met. St. Aidan wanted to walk because it was the humble way. St. Aidan wanted to walk because that was the way that he would meet new people and hear their stories, their hopes and their concerns. It was the place where he could have enough time and space to talk about Jesus in an honest, authentic and natural way. This means a lot to us in this church. We are a church that chooses the humble way, that meets people along the road and shares a story of Christ who is saving our lives each an every day. This newsletter is the impression, or footprints, left from our journey together. 4 The Rev. Les Carpenter One Body Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread. -1 Corinthians 10:17 I have been going to church my whole life and communion still gets me. I know the words and actions by heart and still there are surprises for me every week. One week it is the child running to the altar that touches my soul, the next it is the old man whose legs creak as he kneels, the next it is the mother desperate to keep her kids in line at the rail who exhales a sigh of relief at the moment I say the body of Christ. Every meal is sacred time, but there is 4 + Footprints + St. Aidan s, Cypress something truly profound about when we gather to be nourished by God s presence as a community. For all of our differences, frustrations, and selfdestructive habits we are one body when we share that one bread. We are transformed from people in a people. We go from a bunch of wayward souls and become a church. As the words of one of my favorite hymns, I come with Joy, puts it, As Christ breaks bread and bids us share, Each proud division ends. The Love that made us, makes us one, And strangers now are friends.

7 Taylor Durr Director of Youth and Family Ministries Every summer, we kick things off with a pool party for youth group. It is one of the first few times the new 6th graders are at youth group and that the youth get real time to bond with each other and the adults that are there. This summer s pool party was no different. By chance it ended up being mostly middle schoolers and everyone had a blast. While there are many ways for my heart to be warmed through different experiences in children and youth ministry, there was one instance during the pool party that meant the world to me. While my husband is a big kid himself and has always been actively involved with our youth ministry. At this pool party, we had all just finished making and eating ice cream sundaes when I look over and see my husband deep in conversation with one of the teenagers. The conversation had started with video games and gone from there. It is the relationships like this that make a difference in a teen s faith life once they finish high school. Research July 1: No youth group, Happy Independence Day! July 8: Set up for VBS immediately following 10:30 service. Lunch will be provided. July 9-13: Volunteering at VBS, 8:30 a.m.- 12:30 p.m. July 22: Games and Icebreakers, 12:00-1:30 p.m. July 27: Convocation Splashtown trip- must have RSVP d. August 5: Service project, 12:00-1:30 p.m. Youth Schedule Grades 6th-12th through Fuller Youth Institute has told us that the youth who have 5 healthy relationships with adults outside of their family have a stronger faith, and a faith that lasts past high school. Being able to see these moments of our teens bonding with adults in the church is a joy for me to see. It is wonderful seeing those relationships created and formed, knowing the impact it can and will have on their faith later in life. One of the things I have always been impressed with at Saint Aidan s has been how much a part of the church the youth are. They are involved in every way, and known by adults (beside their parents). The adults care about our teens and children, and the children and teens enjoy talking and spending time with the adults. I am grateful to be at a church where this is the case, and where pictures of adults and teens in deep conversation is not a rarity, but a regularity. August 12: Bible study at Torchy s Tacos, 12:00-1:30 p.m. August 19: Urban Air, leave church at 12:00 p.m., return around 3:30 p.m. Please bring $27.50 (covers all attractions and special socks) August 26: Saint Aidan s Day no youth group All youth events are from 4:00-5:30 p.m. in the youth room unless otherwise noted. Please contact Taylor at taylor@aidanschurch.org. Footprints + St. Aidan s, Cypress + 7
