1 The Messenger We are believers in Christ who gather to PRAISE God, GROW and SERVE. January 2019 Pastor s Corner Pastor Mel Nielsen pastormel1@hotmail.com cell: Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. 35 One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: 36 Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law? 37 Jesus replied: Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. [c] 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. [d] 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments. - Matthew 22:34-40 (N.I.V.) In my sermon on Sunday, December 16, I closed the message by saying joy is a choice. Life is filled with choices, left or right, now or later, more or less, this or that. Take your pick, there seems to be an endless amount of choices we need to make. Depending on your current state, the choice you make may vary. One day it is this and that next day it might be that. Christmas 2018 has come and gone. You are probably reading this in a new year, Let me welcome you to the year where you will need to make more choices. Some of the choices we make will not seem fair. Other choices will leave us having to decide between two equally important options. There are days I wake up and pray that I will not have to make a choice. Then I go to the breakfast cabinet and I realize I need to choose between Raisin Bran, Shredded Wheat or Reese s Puffs. Can I confess I often begrudgingly choose the Shredded Wheat when I really want the sugary cereal. They say it is good to be young in heart. I dunno, my doctor will tell me those young at heart foods are not so good for a heart my age! Once I get through the guilt over my morning meal, I need to decide on which shirt and pants combo I will wear. I need to decide if I will shave or assume people will not see that little bit of stubble. I may need to decide whether to wear a light or heavy coat. I get in the car then decide which route I will take to church. Should I get gas now or on the way home? The traffic light just turned yellow, should I stop or coast on through? How many choices have I made even before I get to work? I believe God knew that life would be filled with choices for us to make. That is why the Lord gave us help. The first choice we should make is to love God. The second is to love our neighbors. Everything hangs on these two choices. To be fair I don t ask God which shirt I should wear, I don t include God in my decision to buy gas. Maybe I should, but I don t. I am not convinced that is what God meant when He said love Him first. Which leads me to the next choice I need to make in my morning routine. Which attitude will I bring into the workplace? Now I am talking to God. Please Lord, help me to make the PLEASE SEE PASTOR ON PAGE 4 Centenary UMC Church Staff Pastor...Mel Nielsen Coordinator of Outreach and Growth...Kevin Hinkle Office Administrator...Karen Dirksmeyer Office Manager...Destiny Slater Music Director...Terri Benz Contemporary Worship Leader...Rachel Hinkle Parish Visitor...Jarice Crenshaw Custodian...Patty Adcock Nursery Attendant...Kayleigh Dirden Centenary s Missionaries Vae Rose Fultz - Retired Deaconess Mark & Rebecca Smallwood - Teachers at Red Bird Mission School in Kentucky Church Information 331 E. 4 Jacksonville Centenary UMC Page 4 January 2019 PASTOR (CONTINUED FROM FRONT PAGE) Photo by Kevin Hinkle Bob and Mary Dalton, pictured above, took a turn ringing bells for the Salvation Army at Midland Farm and Home on Saturday, December 8. Centenary members filled two days worth of bell ringing. The other day was Thursday, November 29 at ShopKo. Thanks to all who volunteered to help the Salvation Army. most of this day in glorifying your name. Allow your loving spirit to be revealed in the way I think, act and especially what comes out of my mouth. Help me to stop and think about your love before I make another decision, no matter how mundane they may seem., Since I am supposed to follow Jesus, I ask my savior to go through the doors first. How would I behave if the flesh and blood Jesus were with me all day long? Would I stoop to being petty, would I give in to anger, will I be rude? I don t mean rude to everyone - just those who deserve it! That s when the flesh and blood Jesus whispers in my ear, Let s chat about what people deserve. Okay Lord, I get it, I humbly request. Please allow me to make another choice. It s about then I thank the Lord for interacting with me in my mundane life. I am thankful for the many opportunities I have been given to make better choices. I encourage all of you to take the time to welcome God in this new year by choosing to love Him first. By the way, yes, I asked (prayed to) God about what I should write about in this article. The Lord whispered in my ear, If you love me, I will let this be your choice. God Bless and Happy New Year, PMel Stewardship Stumpers This month the stewardship committee is continuing Stewardship Stumpers. The answers can be found elsewhere in this issue. #1 The church sets the example for children to know the Christian ideals of stewardship and tithing. #2 The Grinch steals Christmas and remains hard-hearted.

New and exciting music is in our lineup this winter. All are welcome - MAKE US YOUR SMALL GROUP INVOLVEMENT! We d love to have you! ANSWERS: from page 4 1. False - From Called to Give, p. 102, is this quotation from Aviva S. Boedecker: Parents who make contributions to the charities they believe in, and who encourage children to make contributions of their own at church, give their children a legacy of values. 2. False - Maybe Christmas doesn t come from a store. Maybe Christmas means a little bit more. Thank You Merry Christmas! Happy New Year! Thanks to my church family for the thoughts, prayers, gifts and food goodies you shared with me and my family before the holidays. MMDC staff members took supplies ( Tornado Tubs, cleaning buckets, school supplies, personal dignity kits, etc.) to Taylorville the day after the tragedy. They heard amazing stories from those who had lived through the tornado. The staff members were impressed with the unselfish attitude of the people. Many local people were hesitant to accept help because they felt that others needed it more. Taylorville UMC has hired a part time worker to help coordinate disaster relief. There will be an ongoing need for trained volunteers to help the city recover. United Methodists will be there as long as they are needed. Cash donations can be given to Centenary (designate MMDC) to replace the items that were donated recently so that they will be ready to respond to the next disaster. Martha Vaché, Mission Chr. Advent Offering Our special Advent Offering will be used to help children and youth. It will be divided between Chaddock, a United Methodist agency in Quincy, and the Big Brother Big Sister organization in Jacksonville. It is not too late to turn in a donation. Make checks to Centenary UMW with memo: Advent. Community Shoe Drive It is time to collect shoes for the Shoeman Water Projects. The shoes collected during our shoe drive are exported to retailers in the developing world. The resale of shoes provides affordable footware, protecting the new owner s feet and overall health from foot abrasions, parasites and mites. Learn more at Shoeman.org. Bring gently used shoes to the narthex. Tie the laces or put a rubber band around the pair of shoes. Money from the sale of the shoes is used to purchase well drilling rigs, water filtration systems, and other supplies to bring clean, fresh water to those who thirst.
