1 The Messenger We are believers in Christ who gather to PRAISE God, GROW and SERVE. MEET OUR INTERIM PASTOR The Rev. J. William Werner will be serving as Centenary s interim pastor during the month of June. Bill will serve 20 hours per week. His duties will include leading and preaching Sunday worship services, visiting hospitals, nursing homes, and resident home bound. Office hours will be Monday thru Thursday from 9:00 to noon. Bill became part of the former Central Illinois Conference in 1966 where he served seven churches until his appointment as District Superintendent of the IGRC Cache River District in During part of his time in retirement, he and his wife, Terry, were cosecretaries of the Annual Conference. After retirement, Bill has served interim appointments in Carlinville, East Moline, Geneseo, Knoxville, Rushville, and Virginia and as Interim Administrative Coordinator of Pastor Care and Counseling. Bill and Terry moved to Virginia, Illinois and build a home in 2003 to be near their son, Matt, and Matt s wife, Stephanie, and three grandsons Jacob, Grant, and Ben. Their other son, Paul, and his wife Ann Marie, live in Louisville, Kentucky. PAVILION PRESENTATION UPDATE Centenary s Board of Trustees thanks everyone who participated in and watched the presentation about the proposed pavilion and then submitted their thoughts. The majority of those expressing an opinion indicated a desire to see the project move ahead. The next step will be for the Trustees and the Committee on Finance to sit down together to discuss how construction of the pavilion might be paid for. Further news will be shared as these discussions take place. No commitment to construction will be made till a congregational vote is taken. The estimated cost of the project does not necessitate a formal Church Conference vote, but the Trustees believe that the scope of this project calls for the decision to be made by members of the congregation and not just by the Board of Trustees. Notification will be sent to members when a date for a vote is set. MEET CENTENARY S NEW PASTOR Pastor Melvin Nielsen and his wife, Debbie have been appointed to Centenary. Mel will begin his work at Centenary on Sunday, July 1 st. Since 2008 Pastor Mel Nielsen has been a Licensed Local Pastor in the United Methodist Church. For the last seven years, he has served at the Bonfield Grand Prairie Parish in Bonfield, Illinois. He has also served in Lostant, Minonk, Dana, Wenona, and Richland in the Vermilion River District. He was nominated for the ministry by his home church, Roanoke United Methodist. Prior to his call to ministry, he had thirty years of business experience in newspaper publishing and offset commercial printing. Pastor Mel and Debbie will celebrate thirty-two years of marriage this June. Debbie is a nurse practitioner. They have two grown children. Their daughter, Sarah, and her husband, Garrett Mathison, live in Fishers, Indiana. Sarah and Garrett have an 8-month old son, Gabriel Andrew. (The Nielsen s first grandchild.) Their son, Michael, and his wife, Molly, live in O Fallon, Missouri. Pastor Mel is looking forward to meeting all of you and discovering and sharing in your passion for ministry in the name of Christ. Interim Pastor: Rev. Sign the sheet in the narthex, contact Kristin Clancy, or call the church office if you can help with this popular activity. MINI MESSENGER DEADLINE Deadline for articles to be in the Mini Messenger is NOON on Wednesday. This is the same deadline for finding replacements if you are scheduled to help during service. This gives the office staff plenty of time to adjust for changes and to print. FILL OUT OFFERING ENVELOPES Please completely fill out your offering envelope designating the amount for stewardship, building and grounds, missions, etc. on the offering envelope. If it is not designated, your complete offering will be applied toward Stewardship.
3 STAFF CHANGES After 28 years as custodian, Bonnie Robinson is retiring as of May 31. John Steckel is also leaving as of May 31 after 11 years as handbell choir director. Both are moving on to give more time to family and/or other work demands. We appreciate the faithful service of both these staff team members. SPRC (Staff/Parish Relations Committee) will keep the congregation informed as the futures of these two positions are addressed. THANK YOU VERY MUCH There are no words adequate to thank those who hosted and those who participated in my retirement reception on Sunday afternoon, May 20. Dick and I were delighted to share this special time with friends from Centenary and other churches where we have served. In addition, we thank you for the gifts, and pray that your generosity will bless students through the scholarship established in my name at my alma mater Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, IL. Again, thank you so very, very much, and thank you for the countless blessings that I/we have received as your pastoral family these past eight years. Pastor Jean Hembrough THANKS TO JOHN STECKEL I want to extend a special thank you to John Steckel for all his years of service as our hand bell director. It has been a pleasure to work in tandem with him in all aspects of handball/choir rehearsals and performances. He has been a fun brainstorming partner and is always ready with a good suggestion. I know the ringers are going to miss him terribly in that role - and so will I! Terri Benz, Music Director TAKE IT TO THE STREETS Volunteers are needed to help with Take it to the Streets. Free Sack Lunches are provided for kids during the summer. Lunches will be delivered throughout the city daily Monday to Friday at 11:30 am beginning on June 4. You can help by: 1) Donating $$. Make checks to Centenary UMC. Put Lunches for Kids in the memo line. 2) Help make lunches at Grace UMC at 5:30 pm (Sun., Mon., Tues., Wed., and/or Thurs. evenings) Everyone is welcome to help. Signup is not needed just show up to help. 3) Help deliver the lunches. (Adults only.) Call if you can do this. Centenary UMC News IGRC ANNUAL CONFERENCE 2018 This year s session of the Illinois Great Rivers Conference will be held in Peoria s Civic Center from June 7 to 9. Due to Pastor Nancy s retirement last year, Centenary is only entitled to only lay member from the church (Karmen Birdsell) plus 1 district equalization member (Kevin Hinkle). John Steckel (who also attended in the past) is available as an alternate member if needed. Several prayer items warrant your attention before and during Annual Conference. Pray for Bishop Beard as he prepares for and then presides over the sessions. Pray for the safe travel of all who will be attending. Pray for the Holy Spirit s power and guidance to be unleashed in the gathering. Pray for our United Methodist sisters and brothers who have been members of churches that will be closed by vote of the Annual Conference including Brooklyn. Pray for those who will gather to celebrate the lives of clergy and lay leaders who have passed away since last year. Pray for those who will be ordained and commissioned into leadership. ROCK PAINTING PARTY The Kindness Rocks project was started to spread a little joy in the world by leaving a small piece of art for someone else to find and brighten their day. We would like to help that movement by having our own community rock garden here at Centenary. On Sunday June 10th, from 12:15 to 2:15 p.m. we will be holding a Rock Painting Party. Painters of ALL AGES are encouraged to come, bring your lunch and share in an afternoon of Art and Fellowship. We will provide rocks, painting shirts, paints, brushes and drinks. Bring whatever sandwich, chips, dessert you would like and help us get our Rock Garden off to a beautiful start! Questions please contact Diana Phillips. MOWERS NEEDED Volunteers are needed to mow the lawn around the church (not the south lot). A mower is available at the church (or you can bring your own). Volunteers usually mow towards the end of the week. The task usually takes 30 to 40 minutes. There is a signup sheet in the narthex. June 2018 Centenary UMC Messenger Page 3

There is free admission with a non-perishable food item on Wednesday mornings. The series begins June 6th with Monster Trucks followed by The Emoji Movie the next week. Movies continue until July 25. Many of our clients are good cooks, but they can t do their own gardening. Thank you for your interest in our organization. Diane Webster, Food Center Rep.
