Greetings to all and God s blessings upon all. It is certainly a pleasure to have this time to address you. We are in the midst of a great time in the body of Christ. God is doing some marvelous things and enacting some tremendous acts in our presence. The scripture is proven right when in Lamentations we find these words Great is His faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning. We certainly are rejoicing for the eternal faithfulness of our God. Happy 126 th Anniversary to the Grace Baptist Church of Germantown. What a rich history this Church has been blessed to have. And then there is the celebration that took place during the week. We welcomed the Rising Star Baptist Church of Denver, Colorado along with the Rev. Dr. Jules E. Smith and Rev. Ida Smith. What a tremendous time we had with the members of the Rising Star congregation who made the trip. We also recognize the commitment that was made by the drivers who sacrificed their weekend to provide transportation for the visiting congregation. The work of the Drama Ministry and the Men s Ministry demonstrated an outstanding level of commitment and compassion as they served our guests. The 126 th Anniversary has given us this opportunity as well to look to purchase a new marquee that will replace the old one we have in front of the church building. This will be a digital board that will have all of our events and activities that will run across the board as persons travel along the Johnson Street corridor. We can achieve this opportunity by persons giving a gift of $ If the math is correct, we can reach our goal with the work and purchase of the sign at the cost of $26K. We encourage our Grace Disciples to be a part of this wonderful opportunity. We thank you all in advance. To turn our eyes to what is going on in our world is very difficult right now. We awoke on Sunday, October 28, 2018 to hear about the massacre of our brothers and sisters in the Jewish community in Pittsburgh, PA. Not only them, but to hear of the other malicious and atrocious acts committed against people of color in the country. I ask that you not only watch, but also be vigilant and pray for the people of God because this is a very difficult and tragic moment in the life of the church. Please report any suspicious activity that you may see, particularly any acts of vengeance and violence towards 3

the institutions of religious freedom. Please be careful. Help by praying and by reporting anything that seems strange to the naked eye. In closing, The Lord bless you all. Happy Thanksgiving! Wilson II The road to a successful 126th Anniversary & Homecoming Day was a long process that touched different ministries of our church. After it was established that the Drama Guild Ministry and the Men s Ministry were going to sponsor the anniversary festivities, there were things to put in place that you may think are common sense matters, but such was not the case. We were hosting guests from the Rocky Mountains, the Mile High City! Not to add insult to injury, but the Pastor of the church we would be hosting is our Pastor s Father in Ministry. What a task to undertake, but WE did it. We hosted the Rising Star Missionary Baptist Church where the Pastor is Jules E. Smith, a native of Saint Francisville, Louisiana. He is married to Reverend Ida Gice Smith, the father of two children and the grandfather of two. Pastor Smith has reportedly received numerous awards, citations and commendations in both the secular At Prayer before the 126 th and Christian communities, namely, the first Rohi Award and the Colorado Gospel Music Academy and Hall of Fame Pastor of the Year Award He is a much sought after Evangelist, Teacher, and Lecture Facilitator. Dr. Smith s Pastoral charge has included: Assistant Pastor, Unity Baptist Church, Bronx, New York; Sunday School Radio Commentator and Associate Pastor at Union Baptist Church, Denver, Colorado. In September of 1986, Pastor Smith was called to shepherd Rising Star Missionary Baptist Church. The date of the Anniversary was planned for October 19-21, The Theme was Standing on the Promises, accompanied with the scripture being 1 Corinthians 15:58 and Timothy 6: The colors of the Day were platinum and plum. The weekend was set with the task of transportation for our guests, a full schedule of events starting upon the arrival at the Philadelphia International Airport on Friday. After check in at the hotel, the group came to the church for a choir rehearsal and dinner featuring the tastes of Philly. Saturday, they toured during the day and were entertained back at the church with 5

a dinner and a performance of Til Death Do Us Part a show performed by the Drama Guild Ministry. Sunday, they were picked up for morning service and dinner with the congregation provided by the Culinary Ministry and returned to the hotel. The things unseen, unnoticed or unmentioned that need to be highlighted were the drivers, food presenters, security, decorators, musicians, choir, van drivers, servers, volunteers and voluntolds. We were blessed when Gregory Allen Roberts, a Grace Son, added his gift from God by leading Be Lifted with the Mass Choir. At the beginning of this article it was mentioned WE, now comes the time to mention the Ministries and individuals that came together to make this event totally successful. So that no one is overlooked, any and everyone not a part of the Drama Guild Ministry or Men s Ministry that took part in ANY way this weekend, we thank you for all and anything you did to make this event successful. The ministries on the program included the Bells of Grace, the Grace Mass Choir, and the Combined Ushers of Grace. We were welcomed by our two newest (almost) members, Sisters Lisa and Leslie Jackson, and also had the longest tenured member, Mrs. Virginia Smith honored by Eagle Scout Stephen Mack during our Celebratory Moment. Thank God for a successful 126th Anniversary & Homecoming and the individuals that go unmentioned in numerous instances. In this case, an unsung shero in the person of Sandi Johnson. We were blessed! AMERICAN BAPTIST WOMEN OF GRACE SEWING SEEDS FOR MISSIONS Women of Grace have been busy designing and sewing pillowcase dresses for the children in Kampala, Uganda and nearby villages as partners of a Christian humanitarian aid organization called Canaan Family Life Center. This organization provides child daily feeding clothing, education, medical care and emotional support in this severely improvised country where child mortality rates are skyrocketing at alarming rates many due to AIDS and MALARIA. The beautiful pillowcase dresses the members of Grace donated and ABWOG sewed will be prayerfully and successfully delivered by a group of Missionaries who have also partnered with the Canaan Family Life Center along with Deacon Sandie Jordan-Gordon with your help, February 6, The need is overwhelming in Uganda, but we intend to make a difference one child at a time. While based in Kampala, Uganda the Missionaries will travel to several villages during their stay. While there, they will give personal testimonies, minister to and encourage the children and adults in any way needed. They will take much needed medications and other miscellaneous gifts. The greatest gift offered is the matchless love of Jesus Christ! We want each person to understand that their life matters and God has plans for them to be with him for eternity. As Jesus said in Matthew 25:35-40 For I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me Then the righteous will answer Him saying, Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You drink? When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or naked and clothe You? Or when did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You? And the King will answer and say to them, Assuredly, I say to you, in as much as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me. God bless you for donating pillowcases, trip donations and your prayers. We are steadily cutting, sewing, pressing and nearing our goal of 100 adorable dresses! 6

How often we are reminded that one of our jobs, as Christians, is to win souls to Christ to show the Love of God so that all may see and want to profess Jesus as Lord. Those who accept the invitation to follow Jesus also follow Acts 2:38 Peter replied, Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you Spiritual Armor Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. Psalm119:105 Therefore, go and make disciples o f a l l t h e n a t i o n s, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. (NLT, Matthew 28:19) Take Me To The Water To Be Baptized will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Our word baptize is translated from the original Greek word baptizo, which means to immerse. According to Wikipedia, It is an act of obedience symbolizing the believer's faith in a crucified, buried, and risen Saviour, the believer's death to sin, the burial of the old life, and the resurrection to walk in newness of life in Christ Jesus. It is a testimony to the believer's faith in the final resurrection of the dead. Grace witnessed the Baptism of four new Christians on Sunday October 28, Pictured below they are from left to right: Ms. Kristen Green, Miss Brianna Miller, Master Cortea Miller and Ms. Stephanie Stewart. 2 Corinthians 5:17(KJV) Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. New converts God has sent you to Grace because He has work for you to do in His kingdom. Be sure to look around and see what ministry suits your spiritual gift and then? Go to work! We need YOU! Grace, God has added to His church and we are grateful! Let us welcome them with open hearts and minds to the fellowship of God s church and this branch of Zion. 9 From the Pen Of The Editor C a n y o u believe that it s November already? Wow, this year has flown by. As we approach Thanksgiving, have you taken the time to reflect on your 2018 blessings? I have and I can say that I have had a cornucopia of blessings poured on me and my family this year, especially health wise. So why a cornucopia of blessings? Here s a little background information from history-of-the-cornucopia When you sit down to a Thanksgiving feast, it s likely your eyes take in an attractive centerpiece on the table called a cornucopia. Fresh flowers, fruits and vegetables fill and spill out of the horn-shaped woven basket. Nicknamed the horn of plenty, the word cornucopia originated in Greek myth. After reading about this humble decoration s beginnings, you may look at the cornucopia in a different way the next time you see one. Zeus Creates the Cornucopia Two stories concern the cornucopia s origins. The first begins with Zeus, the greatest of all the Greek gods. Cronus, his father, wanted to kill Zeus, so his mother Rhea hid him in Crete to protect him. The king of Crete had several daughters who raised him, and their goat provided milk for the child. When Zeus grew older he broke off one of the goat s horns and gave them the magic power to fill up with whatever the owner of the horn desired. Zeus gave the horns to the king s daughters to thank them for caring for him. According to legend, whoever owned the horn would never go hungry. An alternate story involves the goat giving Zeus one of her horns in reverence. Zeus repays her by placing her image in the sky. We know the image as the constellation Capricorn. Hercules Makes the Cornucopia Instead The second story in Greek mythology concerns Hercules s role in creating the cornucopia. A feud erupted between the mighty Hercules and the river-god Achelous. The two competed for the love of Dejanira, a young woman of breath-taking beauty. The two fought in a colossal wrestling match and Hercules began to get the better of Achelous. Achelous, a shape-shifter, changed into a serpent and then into a bull in an effort to gain leverage against Hercules. Hercules broke off one of Achelous s horns, and when he did the river changed course. The water-nymphs came upon the horn in the river and treated the horn as a sacred object. They filled the horn with flowers and took care of it. Later Copia, the Goddess of Plenty, adopted the horn. Hercules married Dejanira and they reared a family. Artist Renderings of the Cornucopia Mythological beings and deities illustrate a theme in classical paintings, and the cornucopia became a popular design element. Artists often painted the curved goat s horn filled with fruit and grain, and thus it came to symbolize wealth and plenty. Tyche, the goddess of riches and abundance, also became associated with the cornucopia. It also became the emblem for several other deities. Modern design for cornucopias usually involves the use of it as a fall decoration. A favorite of florists, they often act as a vessel for containing bright, decorative flowers, fruits, gourds and many other decorative ideas that make it a pretty table ensemble. The cornucopia symbolizes riches and plenty in some folklore, art and mythology, so the decoration rightfully belongs on the table at which you plan to have a meal while enjoying the company of family and friends. The Meaning of the Word Cornucopia The cornucopia has a close association with Thanksgiving, but people considered it symbolic before the holiday existed. The word originated in 1508 and comes from the Latin cornu, meaning horn, and copia, meaning plenty. I m sure that many of us can say that we have had cornucopias of blessings this year, and they have had nothing to do with Greek or Roman deities, but have come as the Grace of God! So as we sit down to this year s table, let us praise Him for His excellent greatness and goodness to us. Soon we will be getting ready for the Christmas season and Let us remember to bless others during this upcoming season of gratefulness and sharing especially those who are less fortunate than us. Happy Thanksgiving and Peace to each of you. S.J. 9

The Triple Nickles Part 1 of 2 As the seasons of Thanksgiving and Christmas approach, they seem to evoke a greater sense of thankfulness and gratitude for the blessings God has bestowed upon us all in various ways. Indeed, despite the trials of this present day, we have much to be thankful for and our African-American heritage stands at the forefront. African-American history is truly limitless. And, whatever the endeavor, African-Americans continue to make their mark. Such is the case with another important chapter of our history as writer Elizabeth Hoover chronicles the story of the first all-black paratroop unit in the U.S. military to serve in World War II, the 555 th Parachute Battalion called The Triple Nickles. A unique piece of American history, the service of these black paratroopers in 1944, continues to point up the many great contributions African Americans made to protect our nation. As proud citizens, the African- American community continues to recognize and celebrate these great achievements. Thus it is, in this season of Thanksgiving, that we will be eternally grateful to all the men and women who so honorably served our country. Submitted by Doris Collins-Terrell November 2018!
