COLUMBIANISM-THE FOUNDATION OF THE DOMESTIC CHURCH FOUNDA TION OF Pennsylvania State Council Knights of Columbus Editor and Distribution: Rick Terroni FSS Volume # 62 Issue # 3 November 2018 State Deputy Mark L. Jago, FIC My Brother Knights and Sisters in Christ, Have you ever gone to a really good movie, one that you enjoyed so much that you had to tell everyone you knew about it? You couldn t wait to tell someone about the story, the characters and who played them, all the drama and action. Then you told them at which theater and what times they could see the movie. You urged them to see it also. When you do or see something you really like, you want to share that happy experience with others. It could be finding a new restaurant, taking a cruise or some other vacation, going to a play, a musical, or just a movie. Do you feel that same way about being a Knight of Columbus? Do you enjoy the fraternity and the fellowship? Do you enjoy helping others by volunteering at food banks and soup kitchens, helping out at school or the VA Clinic or Hospital? Do you enjoy the excitement and laughter of children participating at our Soccer or Basketball Competitions, our Easter Egg Hunts, and Breakfasts with St. Nickolas? Do you feel a deep sense of peace and joy when you pray the Rosary and attend devotions with your brother Knights and families? Do you feel good knowing that our donations are helping countless victims of disasters and supporting young men preparing for the priesthood? If you answered Yes to any these questions, then ask yourself these questions, Why am I not sharing this wonderful experience with others? Why am I not encouraging my co-workers, my neighbors, my friends, my family members to become Knights? Why am I not asking every Catholic man I meet to join our Order? Unfortunately, most of us are being selfish. We are not sharing the joy and satisfaction we feel from being a Knight. We are also denying them and their families the tremendous Fraternal Benefits that we enjoy as members. As of this writing, we have increased our ranks by only 350 Knights. That is one recruit for every 170 members. These new members belong to just 140 councils, which means that 425 councils still haven t recruited one new member. If every council recruited just FOUR new members, we would exceed our membership goal for the year. If only 3% of our membership recruited one new Knight, we would achieve our goal. I ll ask you one final question If you believe in the mission and vision of Father McGivney, if you believe in the work of our Order, and if you value your membership and enjoy being a Knight, are you going to share them with others? Ask a man to join us. St. Michael Protect Us. Fr. McGivney Pray for Us. Our Lady Help of the Persecuted Christians Pray for Us. Vivat Jesu, Mark L. Jago, FIC State Deputy.

November 2018 KEYSTONE KNIGHT Page 3 \ Faith in Action Family Programs The weather is turning brisk; so, it must be November and Councils are nearing the midpoint of the Fraternal Year. Christmas is coming! If you are still looking for ideas for your Council Christmas Program, go to the PA State Council website, or contact Assistant Family Director George Schneider Jr. or any of the Family Directors listed below. The required Family Program is Consecration to the Holy Family. This is often done in January to coincide with the Feast of the Holy Family, but you can do it anytime it works for the Council and Parish. Remember, you will need to order Holy Family Prayer Cards (#10371) from the Supreme Council. More information can be found at or contact Assistant Family Director Alton Wise or any of the Family Directors listed below. Many Councils provide help for those in need during the Holiday Season. These activities are great for our local communities and can also help Councils complete the requirements for The Family Featured Program, Food for Families. Details can be found on the Supreme Council website -for-families.html#. Deputy Family Director Jack Archer is leading the Program. We still need you re your help with the Family of the Month / Year! The Supreme Council has established a very easy to follow process that every Council in Pennsylvania should be using. Each month, every Council in Pennsylvania should recognize a Family that models Christian family values and models. Any Family in the Council or Parish is eligible. The Family of the Month Report Form (#10668) must be completed and sent to fraternalmission@kofc.org by the 15 th day of the following month. Copies should be sent to statedeputy@pakofc.us and family@pakofc.us. The family will present the Family with a Family of the Month Certificate (#1843) at a Council or Church event. Supreme Council will also randomly pick winning families for a special Holy Family gift. Three Pennsylvania Families were selected in September. Congratulations to the Families of Jack Cruice, Vincent Wojnar and Robert Conroe! The PA State Council Family Team is gathering information on Family Program Activities in the State. 4 November 2018 KEYSTONE KNIGHT Page 4 \ Agency Report September 2018 Pennsylvania General Agents and Field Agents are working hard to reach out to you. K of C Insurance is on track for another record breaking year in terms of insurance protection, and remains one of the highest rated companies in terms of insurance in force and claims paying ability. If you have policies with other companies, please take advantage of our complimentary reviews. I am constantly surprised and saddened by the number of Knights I meet who thought that they owned whole life, but found out the hard way that their policies were not guaranteed. Your Field Agent will be able to help you to better understand how your policies work, and whether they can be expected to meet your needs in the future. Field Agents of the Month September 2018 Burkitt Agency Our Agent of the Month is Michael Steele - Southwest PA Michael's work ethic has been nothing short of stellar! He has averaged over 10 appointments per week and is helping families secure their financial futures utilizing the Knights of Columbus Forecaster Financial Analysis program. More and more brother Knights are putting their trust in Michael, the Knights of Columbus Insurance Program and its products and services. Michael is dedicated to his members and visits his councils on a regular basis, keeping the brothers up to date with the mission of the Knights of Columbus Insurance program. Feedback to the Agency from leaders and member clients has been super! They share how much they appreciate him and his penchant for doing a thorough job. Please join me in congratulating Michael on his success. Michael lives in Latrobe, PA with his wife Amy and two children, Annette and Breandan. Our agent of the month is William Urban. Grayeske Agency William has been with our team since March He is happily married to his wife Lisa and has 3 children. Hailing from Northeast Philadelphia, William has been a Knight since 2013 as a member of the Regina Coeli council He recently became a 4 th degree member of the order in He serves as the membership coordinator for his council, serves on the 1 st degree team and is involved in many of the home association events. William is acutely aware of the need for protection for members and their families, as his father passed away when he was 9, leaving his mother to provide for the family. He also has gone above and beyond to make sure that members and families receive benefits owed to them. Recently, he was persistent in assisting a client receive a waiver of premium from their disability. The client was under the impression that he did not qualify for a claim, but William helped him through the process to the benefits that he deserved. William is truly a credit to the Agency and our Order.
November 2018 KEYSTONE KNIGHT Page 5 Our Agent of the month is Ken Zinn. Hutek Agency Ken joined K of C Insurance in February He has been a member of Council 871 in Hanover for 35 years, and has served in a variety of positions. He and his wife Jan have been married for 34 years. They have three wonderful grown children and one granddaughter. In addition to his outstanding work in helping his clients, Ken has been a pillar in his community: * He has recently been given a Lifetime Achievement Award by the local Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts for fifty years of involvement and leadership. * He and Jan were instrumental in starting his Council s involvement in the National Apple Harvest Festival thirty years ago. They started the Apple Daiquiri Booth, which has been very popular. Over that time, the Council has raised over $150K for charity! * Ken has been the Chairman for the Delone Catholic HS golf tournament for the last four years, and has helped raise thousands of dollars for scholarships for deserving students and families. * Ken was the President of the Hanover Lions Club Ken has quickly become a valued asset to the Agency and to K of C Insurance. Our Agent of the Month is Joseph Fragale. McIntosh Agency Joe join the Agency in September 1, Joe joined the Knights in 1990 as a Charter member of Our Lady of Rocio Council in Rota, Spain and currently a member of Council 990 Emporium Pa and Assembly 958 St. Mary s Pa. Joe primary goal in becoming a Field Agent was to assure that a full time agent dedicated to providing excellent service and advice was available to his members. Joe is a retired Chief Petty Officer of the United States Navy, so service comes natural. Joe married his wife Gretchen in 1991 and lived in South Carolina, Guam and Virginia before returning to Emporium after retirement. Joe and Gretchen have two daughters, Taylor and Olivia and are members of St. Mark Parish Emporium Pa. Joe has done an excellent job serving his members and was named Agent of the Month for September. Joe s work ethics and attention to detail is unmatched and very much appreciated by his members.
November 2018 KEYSTONE KNIGHT Page 6 Measure-Up Campaigns for the ARC of Pennsylvania will End My Brother Knights and Ladies, For nearly four decades, the Pennsylvania State Council has conducted the Measure-Up Campaign which aided the Arc of Pennsylvania for support of persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This was a worthwhile program which redirected much needed funds to the various county ARC Chapters. At the complete of this year, our program will come to an end. This past spring, PA Senate Memo #3 and House Bill 2050 were proposed as an amendment to the Protection from Abortion Act. This legislation would protect unborn children from being aborted based upon a prenatal diagnosis of Down Syndrome, as well as dismemberment abortions and abortions based solely on gender. The Executive Board of Directors of the ARC of Pennsylvania chose not to support these bills. Because the ARC s current position is inconsistent with the Church s and Order's Pro-Life position, the PA State Council and its subordinate councils will no longer conduct Measure-Up Campaigns or support the ARC of Pennsylvania. All the donations from this year s campaign will be turned over to them, since the monies were collected, in good faith, with the understanding that they would be donated to the ARC and the funds could not be returned or used for other purposes. Upon their receipt of our last check, our association with the ARC of Pennsylvania will be terminated. The State Chaplain and I met with the Arc President Michael Marsh and Executive Director Maureen Cronin and explained our deep disappointment and surprise for the ARC not supporting legislation which would add protection for the very people they profess to serve. We informed them that we could not, as a Catholic organization, provide support to those in favor of abortion. The decision to suspend our relationship with the ARC is a moral one, supported by the Bishops of Pennsylvania and the Supreme Council. Unfortunately, we are not alone. This same situation has occurred in other jurisdictions, with the ARCs supporting the abortion of Down Syndrome children and then the State Councils severing their ties with them. The possibility of conducting fund raising to support alternate organizations which assist children and young adults will be discussed at the next Annual State Convention at King of Prussia, May 3-5, I know that many members enjoyed working with their local Arc Chapters. I know that we have members with relatives and friends who receive support from the ARC. They will be extremely disappointed that we have withdrawn our support. So am I. I am very disappointed that the Arc took the position that they did. This was not our choice; this action is in response to a poor decision made by the ARC. It is indeed unfortunate, that those most in need will suffer the consequences. If members want to continue to participate with Arc on an individual basis, that is a personal decision they must make, with an informed Catholic conscience. However, if they choose to continue, they must not do so while representing the Knight of Columbus. Fraternally, Mark Jago, FIC State Deputy
November 2018 KEYSTONE KNIGHT Page 7 COAL - Chance of a Lifetime The 2018 COAL program is on going. The first payment date of October 12 th has past. The cost associated with any payments postmarked between October 13 th and November 1 st is $3.50 per book. Stubs do not need to be returned with the payment. This represents an advance payment; therefore, Councils can continue with their sales. Cost for payments postmarked after November 1 st is $3.75 per book. The early delivery bonus and sales bonus will still apply. For each book stub returned to the committee by December 1 st the Council will receive $.25 per book. The sales bonus is $1.00 for each COAL book sold over the quantity sold during the 2017 campaign. For new participants the starting point is 50 books. In order to make the 2018 COAL program a success, your continued support is needed. Make this year a success for both your Council s Treasury and the Scholarships we provide for our children. These are the two areas that benefit from the sales of COAL chances. In order to participate in the Scholarship program your Council must sell a minimum of 50 books. It is important for us to work together in order to make scholarships available for our children. he If you have any questions, please contact me at Joe Caromano, FST COAL Chairman

November 2018 KEYSTONE KNIGHT Page 9 From the Desk of Jack Rosati Pa State Membership Director Happy Legacy Month Dear Brother Knights, October is almost over and the month of November is nearly here. November and Thanksgiving give us a perfect opportunity to remember what we are thankful for. I am thankful for the Knight that asked me to join our order so many years ago. He had been asking me for years and I finally gave in. You hear this comment a lot... I wish I had joined sooner. I ll be giving that brother knight a call in November, thanking him for thinking that I was worthy of this great organization. I encourage all of you to do the same. Those knights that came before us built a legacy on their good works and their recruitment efforts. We owe it to them to keep their legacy going and in doing so..we will be creating our own legacy. So let s make November Legacy Month. Let s thank our proposer for his recruiting effort by recruiting a member of our own. Let s keep Father McGivney s legacy going by helping families and parishes survive during these troubling times. And let s keep Christ alive in our heart and in our world by being His hands here on Earth. The work can be heavy but always remember many hands make for light work. Now go create your legacy! And Thank You for all that you do. Vivat Jesus, Jack Rosati Pennsylvania State Membership Director
November 2018 KEYSTONE KNIGHT Page 10 November Life Featured Program Marches For Life Show public support for the right to life. The Knights of Columbus encourages others to choose life through public support of the pro-life cause. Knights can organize and participate in local/state/province/ regional marches for life and/or organize participation of Knights/parishioners/students/etc., in bus trips to the national marches in Washington, D.C., Ottawa, Mexico City, throughout the Philippines, or in other countries, showing unwavering public support for the right to life. The Pennsylvania State Council Life Team is suggesting that each Council discuss and start planning this program now to make sure that the March on Washington DC in January will be the most successful ever. If the Council cannot attend, they should plan a local prayer service for those travelling to the march, or some other type of local awareness of the pro-life cause. Grand Knights should have already held a meeting with their Life Directors to discuss plans for either a trip to the March, or some other local event. Go to marchforlife.org for more March information. For more details on how to conduct and obtain support materials, go to the supreme website at: The goal of each Council is to get others in the parish and community involved and aware of our commitment to defending the right to life of every human being from the moment of conception to natural death. Marches for life is a featured program which counts for two credits toward the Columbian award.
