Vegas Vikings News January 2019 Sons of Norway Lodge Las Vegas, Nevada Ord Fra Presidenten: Dear Vegas Vikings, The dates for the visit by the Stoughton Norwegian Dancers ( has been firmed up and now we re looking to house them. They will be arriving late in the day on Tuesday, March 26 th and leaving early in the morning on Friday, March 29 th. The high school students will be performing a number of times during their visit stay tuned for details but the top order of business at this stage is to ensure that we have enough housing for them. The other lodge is housing about half the dancers and their adult chaperones. We need to find homes for 12 students and 4 or 5 chaperones. Hosting duties would include: *A place for an average three students and an adult chaperone to bed down for the night including bedding; the only restriction is that they not have to sleep on a hard floor. They can sleep on a floor if there is an air mattress, for instance. *Breakfast each morning. *Snacks in the evenings. (The entire entourage will eat together for lunch and dinner each day so hosts won t need to worry about providing those meals.) *A place to shower each morning/evening and towels. Each of the chaperones will have a van so there is no need for hosts to provide transportation to and from each day s events. If you are able and willing to accommodate this request, please let me know and let me know how many you can take. If you want to talk about it at the lodge meeting on Thursday night (Jan. 3) (Saga owner Gert Hvalsund from Norway will be speaking), I ll see you then, of course! Hilsen, Erik Pappa Vegas Viking Lodge President January 2019 Vegas Vikings Lodge News page 1
More Scandinavian News: Local Scandinavians, I thought you d like to know about some of our upcoming events. There is no official lodge meeting in December but we are getting together nonetheless to Party Like a Viking THIS Wednesday, Dec. 5 at 6 p.m. at the Blue Ox Tavern at 5825 W Sahara Ave, Ste A, Las Vegas, Nevada Everyone is invited; you don t have to be a member of the lodge. The bar has a lot of cool games and we always have a good time at this quarterly outing. Viking helmets optional. More event info on our Facebook page: Our lodge will meet again on Thursday, Jan. 3 at 6:30 p.m. at Christ Lutheran Church. Our presenter is Gert Kvalsund, a longtime local chef from Norway, will tell us about his latest venture: The opening of Saga Pastry + Sandwich at S Eastern Ave., Ste. 100 in Henderson, which is expected to open Dec. 14th, offering pastries and sandwiches with a Scandinavian flair, such as Nordic waffles, Swedish pancakes, cinnamon Buns, school buns, World's Best Cake, Arctic Coldwater Shrimp sandwiches, Norwegian smoked salmon sandwiches, baguettes, Scandinavian coffee, and some specialty beverages, such as Solo and lingonberry saft, Saga will also carry some Scandinavian sweets, jams and other sought-after Scandinavian products. Gert has lived in Las Vegas since 1995, and has worked as a chef locally at the Flamingo hotel and opening IKEA Las Vegas. He spent 8 years travelling the globe as a chef, working on every continent except for South America and Antarctica before deciding to open his own restaurant. Saga means story, so this restaurant will feature food that is part of Gert's story, from early childhood until modern day. The program gets underway at 7 p.m. We eat and socialize at 6:30 p.m. Our annual lutefisk dinner is Saturday, Jan. 26 at the Boulder City Elks Lodge. Please purchase tickets and join us at 3 or 6 p.m. and, of course, we always need volunteers to help out. Also, we hope to be able to offer Norwegian language lessons starting in late January. A Norwegian living locally has expressed a willingness to do this and the details are yet to be worked out. But if you re interested, please let me know. Finally, if you re not already doing so, please follow us on Facebook: groups/ /. If you are on Twitter, you can find Hope to see you soon. 5 Thought for the Month: Did you know that Norway introduced salmon sushi to the Japanese in the eighties. While sushi is absolutely a Japanese invention, they did not use salmon in the dish until it was suggested by a Norwegian delegation in 1980's. Despite the distance between the countries, Japan seemed a natural fit for Norwegian seafood. Japan's fish stocks were suffering from overfishing but demand from consumers was high. The deals created all those years ago have helped to boost Norwegian seafood exports. In Japan, Norwegian salmon sushi is one of the most popular dishes, especially among younger people. It took time to happen though, as the Japanese were originally concerned with the health impact of eating raw salmon. Members: We are in search of a new webmaster that would like to build a new website under the umbrella of the Sons of Norway. Interested parties please contact Lollo or Erik for more information. 6 Membership updates from Karen Holien: As many of you know, our international Sons of Norway has been promoting a membership drive to strengthen our organization. We are proud to announce that we have reached our local goal of 11 members in 2018! Our 3 newest members are Brian P. Christensen, Randolph "Troll" Winge and Gaylord Winge. Troll signed up at our Bazaar and also gave a gift membership to his father! We welcome each one of you and look forward to getting to know you all better. Several people have reached milestone memberships and will be presented with award pins at the next meeting. Heidi Kasama has reached 30 years, Signe Roden 25 years, and Lynelle Aanestad 20 years. Three members will also receive their 5 year pins: David Anderson, Gerri Grant and Cato Sandberg. We are proud of you all!!! January 2019 Vegas Vikings Lodge News page 6
A Little Sunshine from Suzan Sunshine is needed for: * Holiday cards were sent to all members with health concerns. We trust everyone will have gotten over their health concerns by Marilyn Dille spent a few days in the hospital. Before the holidays. She is back at her apartment at Brookdale. She was out with her daughter on errands when Suzan took her Norwegian baked items. Some of the items were things she used to bake and we enjoyed them so very much over the years. Scholarship news: We recently got a nice update note from Kathryn Reed. Thanks to Lollo Sievert, she has updated our scholarship application deadline for 2019 on the Vegas Viking website. The Postmark deadline will be April 6, We usually don't put the application form out for 2019 until the New Year as we want the students current school record from Fall & Winter Encourage the youth you know to apply for our scholarship. Thanks to everyone who has donated to our scholarship fund. Karen Holien and Maureen Anderson have done many fund raisers for the scholarship fund. Thank you to Maureen Anderson for November s lovely raffle. It raised $128 for the scholarship fund! Boxtops are still being collected for Robert Taylor ES. In November we sent 77 and in December, we didn t send very many. Please bring in those that you collected from the holidays! Please ask your friends near and far to save for you. Thank you! Pull Tops: Thank you to all who are saving. I have taken donations of pull tops to Ronald McDonald House from Lodge members, Beta Sigma Phi members, and other friends. All the donations are appreciated as they assist their program to assist families of children in the hospital here. Thanks to everyone saving the plastic bottle caps from beverage containers. Bonnie McDaniel continues to collect the caps to assist the Veterans with their medical co pays. Jeanette Grove and I have collected huge donations from others during the past year and taken them to Bonnie. Remember: they can take plastic lids that screw on lids equals one co-pay for cancer patients. Thanks to all of you who continue to save the bottle caps! It is appreciated! 9 Give the Gift of Heritage Christmas is when I really remember my Norwegian heritage. That was the time of the year we had lefse and meatballs that grandma Grangaard made. Of course there was lutefisk. We read the Christmas story every year. And I remember the gifts and Santa, but now as an adult I wish I had learned more about my heritage growing up. That my Norwegian heritage and culture was more than lefse and something we celebrated only at Christmastime. It would have been a great gift. Heritage is a very special gift to share with family and friends. Those of you reading this realize this because you are a Sons of Norway member. This year give the gift of a membership to Sons of Norway. It is very easy to do. You can do this online or call Sons of Norway ext and sign up a family member or a friend. Have a joyful holiday season. Luella Luella Grangaard District Six President January 2019 Vegas Vikings Lodge News page 9
We sadly share the news of the loss of a dedicated lodge member: Ella Bernice (Bee) Belzone passed away on Thanksgiving Day, November 22, 2018 at the age of 96. She was preceded in death by three sons, Jon Jarnberg, Burce Jarnberg and Carl Wm Jarnberg, Jr. As she wished her body has been donated to science. Memorials may be sent to Vegas Viking 6-152, c/o Andy Agan, Pine Glen Ave, Apt 206, Las Vegas, NV and specified for the scholarship fund. January 2019 Vegas Vikings Lodge News page 10
Our annual Scandinavian Holiday Bazaar garnered a lot of foot traffic and the indications thus far are that it proved successful. Thanks to Terri Anderson for organizing it and ordering all the merchandise, Karen Holien for heading up the cookie-baking effort (and going on Fox 5 TV with Henny Morse and I to tout the event), Bob Sturgeon for getting up at 3 am to make the waffle batter and make the waffles on-site, and everyone else who was involved and supported this cool cultural event and important fundraiser for our lodge.
